Fish ID -Mosman Bay
Submitted by ikeya18 on Mon, 2009-02-23 05:12a few of my mates and myself went down to mosman bay, im wondering if anyone has seen these fishes, that seems to jump outta the water, they make a relativelly large splash, and i swear i saw a number of these fishes jumping around, i would guess that since the splahses where considerable and loud, at a distance these fishes where relativelly large. we tried a few different baits on them but to no luck?
anyone caught these before, and i swear they jumped and swam like grasshoppers! can anyone ID these things ta ...

Saturday Report
Submitted by SamC on Sun, 2009-02-22 09:52Headed out yesterday with Simo_ and was greeted with some rediculously flat water pretty much all day! haven't seen it this flat for ages...
Anyway we launched about 830 (gentleman hours), the boat ramp car park was almost full!
We headed straight out to the containers and did a bit of jigging, took a while to located a small school which ended up being small amberjacks, first fish i bought up was a little amberjack which had been attacked by a shark. After Simo dropped down again and once again got sharked we moved on.
Headed into the late 80s early 90s looking for some bottom fish. You know its a good day when you can either driftbait or use an 8oz sinker in 90m of water.
First drop down, i hooked up and landed this nice double
Queeny and B/A
Next drop down Simo hooked up and once he landed another queeny it was quite obvious that we had found a nice school of them, kept 1 out of 4 just to try and see how they taste
Simon's nice Queeny
Biggest for the day 80cm and 6kg (looks even bigger with GoGo gadget arms eh?
)
Anyway moved on to try some other spots in similar depth about 15 odd mile away, on the way found some more ground and pulled a U/S dhuie off which released fine.
Got to another spot and pulled anothe U/S dhu, a couple of pan (45-50cm) pinks and a hooter red
2.2kg of Goldfish
Was about 7pm by this stage and the wind has picked up a little but still managed to boot in and got to the ramp just as it was getting dark!
Cheers for a good day on the water Simon, spewin' i still crack that double digit dhu...
Cheers,
Sam

point walter jetty
Submitted by iamafunkyboy on Sun, 2009-02-22 08:47
Hi everyone,
thanks for all the tips that i have been reading through the forums.
they have been great in regards to what to use, where and when to go and whats biting. basically the only thing that you havent done for me is throw in the line.
quite a novice to the fishing game, but i am learning it and loving it. my wife would say that i am now officially addicted.
last night i went to point walter and pulled out a nice couple of crabs, the location that everyone is pointing to in the river for crabs.
then went up the river towards freo and pulled out 7 sand whiting. good feed they are.
once i figure out the upload thing and reducing size of photo's i will put up some photos.
but thanks once again guys and i look forward to reading more tips in the future.

Swanbourne Drainathon
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sat, 2009-02-21 10:51Sherbs, Uncle Stu and myself decided to give Swanbourne Drain a try last night with reports that some decent sized tailor were being caught down that way. We all piled into Sherb's van and headed down there around 6pm to find a slight seabreeze and a small swell.
Loaded up with a ton of gear, bait and burley we trudged past the host of mostly fat, nude male sunbathers in search of the legendary Swanbourne drain. After 40 minutes of slugging through the sand we finally came in site of the large concrete block that signifies where the drain is and decided to try a bit of a gutter just to the south.

Big Robbie Dalmatic and his lively pooch, and we were soon wetting some mulies, blue sardines and prawns. There was obviously a lot of smallish whiting around because they were picking my mulies to pieces. Occassionaly, I would feel a typical herring bite, but they also must have been small.
Things weren't looking to flash until Sherbs hooked up to something really solid on his bluebait rig. He worked his 4000 Sustain like a maestro with a Stradivarius and after a hard fought battle had a fantastic tailor on the sand. It was a hooter, measuring 50 cm. The most impressive thing about it was its thickness through the shoulder. A great fish.

The action slowed down a bit after that before Uncle Stu managed a size tailor and his first ever stingray.

I was feeling like it was not going to be my night after getting a lot of smaller bites. But then there was the telltale crash, bang, whallop of a decent sized tailor. It was isn't in the same league as Sherb's fish, but at nearly 40 cm it was a bit of fun on my Heartland 3000.

That was it for the fishing action. Thankfully, having used up the bait and burley and emptied a few beer bottles our loads were a lot lighter on the way back and a brisk 30 minutes walk has back to Sherb's van.
It was great to get out again with some top people on what was a beautiful night.
All the best, Colin Hay

Trolling Tips and Techniques
Submitted by WODF on Fri, 2009-02-20 18:20Just wondering what everybody does to ensure they have every chance of hooking that fish of a lifetime when trolling. Would it be having a veriety of different lure brands or styles in the water? maybe varying lure colours or the distance the lures are set back? using baits as opposed to artificials and when? whatever it is, i would love to hear it. I am always looking for new ways to help tune my fishing skills and hopefully this topic will help me do just that. Hopefully a lot of people will find this topic and it's information useful.
Look forward to hearing from everyone

How do I get my mojo back?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2009-02-20 13:57I think we discussed something like this recently, but lately I've had the worst run of luck when it comes to fishing or weather. (Yes, I know about the Perth tales of woe) I've been out bugger all over the last month for one reason or another, mainly to do with a lack of fishing motivation. I decided yesterday that I was going to break that and went out of Tantabiddi with all guns loaded for every type of fishing. Tried for spanglies/chinamen/trevs inside the reef on poppers and divers - nothing, went out the back and trolled skirts for an hour - nothing (not good conditions either along with coral spawn), then went to my trusty old trout spot and got so towelled up that I've got braid cuts on my thumbs trying to stop them - result - ping ping ping. Went for a quick dive on the way in a nothing, cursed I reckon. Decided I'd ante up again today and went for a dive with a mate and we managed to find 7 good red crays + (4 undersize and 2 setose good sized females (all returned) and one buck painted - dropped), but took us about 4.5 hours as they were all deep as a result of the lightening. (photos to come)
All in all, my fishing luck has sucked lately and I need to find the love. I'm not sure if its seeing that one good fish, or if I've been spoilt (I know what some of you are going to say)
but I just can't seem to break the hoodoo and get out of that rutt. It also hasnt helped that most of my missions are solo efforts. :( I'm going to ante up again tomorrow and get out there, but I just can't make the decision on what I want to fish for and what is going to get the mojo back. I'm sure some of you must know this feeling?
Anyway, thats the end of my ranting, just had to put it out there.
Cheers,
Adam
