Exmouth Easter Week - Pics

Hit up Exmouth over Easter.

Weather gods definity weren't on our side, so threw quite a spanner in the works.

Here's a few pics all the same...

Lancelin

Took the tinny out from Lano today. Great weather and good fishing. Managed to get out about 10ks and caught 6 dhufish biggest 12.5 kg. 4 successfully released, striped tuna and 2 pinkies.

Lisa's Sambo!

Even though it was the biggest fish she's ever caught (and she got two more bigger ones after this one) she still wasn't impressed that we couldn't take it home to eat...I've got to teach this woman the merits of sport fishing! Still, when we changed spots and got bugger all, she was wishing we'd stayed where we were! Her fish came on mulies while I got mine (plus a rat ambo) on jigs/placcies, and that was pretty much it for the day, apart from me highsticking an eagle ray and breaking my backbone elite!

First Landbased Pinkie - 19/4/12

Hey guys,

pretty happy got my first landbased metro pinkie!

The original plan was to go to the beach and fish for sharks, but after we got there and set up there was too much weed so decided to head over to the nearby rockwall and try for some sharks there.

Fished from about 7.30 til 9 and not much was happening.  I managed to pick up a small banjo shark at about a meter long and a very small port jackson shark at about 30cm.

then hooked up on quite a solid fish.  Took a few runs which i immediately called it for a small shark.  fought it for about 5 mins hopping over the rocks bare footed (dressed for the beach), then i saw it surface!  Was an awesome site to see my first landbased pinkie coming up on the surface.

As usual i forgot to bring the gaff so i tried to tire it out before i got it to the rocks.  Sherbs climbed down the rocks and tried to lift it up.  It seemed that as soon as we get close to the water the big sets of swell come!!  The pinkie then fell down a hole in the rocks where the water was rushing in and we could barely see it.  We called the guy fishing close by to get his gaff.  He tried gaffing it but then dropped his gaff so sherbs took the plunge and just lifted it out of the rocks by the rig.

We managed to lift it out and i hugged it as tight as i could to get it back up to the top of the rocks.

Huge thanks to sherbs for all the help...wouldnt have been able to land it with out him there helping me out!

Weighed in at 6kg and measured 83cm

Salmon @ Augusta

Landed this Salmon in Augusta this week. Caught on 12 Lb Sufix braid, Shimano Sienna 2500, Shimano Barra 662 rod, Smili'n Jacks lure. Put up a good fight on the light gear. He swollowed the hooks deep into the gills so I had to keep him.

Car accident < LB Pink Snapper!

"Without pain, we would never know joy..."

Car packed and fishing buddy in tow, we hit peak hour, wet weather traffic.  I had a bingle in my beloved car and my heart sank, fearing the worst.  After inspecting the damage (just a small dent in the bonnet and scuffed front bumper) and exchanging details we were back on the road.  Although dead keen for a fish, my thoughts were with my poor car

Arriving at the spot, I was hopeful of a tailor or two.  Howling wind, plenty of wash and swell, anticipation was high!  The mulies were getting picked to death and we had caught nothing!  So I gave that a break and set up the heavier gear. As we usually do, if we’re gonna go home with nothing, we may as well have some fun with rays in the process.

Out went a whole sand whiting I had brought with me.  About two tinnies and a cigarette later something took interest to it, short little run then nothing.  Brought it in and the whiting was gone and the nylon on the nylon coated wire was stripped back.  Oh well, just another ray stealing my bait (…or was it???)

I was losing patience and just wanted something to stretch the arms so I switched over to 80lb Jinkai mono and Mustad Demons to improve my chances of a hook up.  The tailor fillets were getting picked to death and we were ready to concede.

Once last bait soak….  Not even 10minutes had passed and off she went!  Tightened the drag and away we go.

Small ray I called it for, but what’s with these headshakes?!  I was telling myself it was a small ray because I didn’t want to be disappointed again, and the headshakes were probably just the wings. But deep down I knew it wasn’t a ray.  After a few good runs and that heavenly feeling of headshakes, I thought I’d caught my first ever toothy.  My mate and I were waiting to see what it was, then straight under the rocks she went!!!  F*CK!!

This is where adrenalin kicked in and (safely!) down the rocks I went.  Although on the sheltered side of the rocks, I was still getting belted by the water.  Laying stomach down on a rock to try and stay safe, I got wet from head to toe.  Leader in hand I carefully freed to the line from the rocks and cleared my eyes of the salt water.  Out popped this big pink head!! WTF!!! SNAPPER!!!!!!!!

Took me and a mate a while to carefully get us and the fish safely up the rocks.  We were soaked, but safe!  I was overjoyed!!  Fist pumps, hugs, high fives, screams of joy and the “Oh what a feeling! Toyota” jumps were plenty.  After we stopped carrying on like teenage girls, we got some photos.

So we only came home with one fish.  But a fish I never even dreamt of catching land-based!  If you cant tell, I’m on cloud nine and you cannot wipe this smile off my face.

Big thanks to my mate.  It is as much his fish as it is mine because if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t of ever landed it.  For the record, it went 86 cm.

Wednesday April 18th, 2012 is a date that will stick me with forever.  Thanks for reading

first landbased pinky :)

got this pinky saturday morning and also lost another 2 because i got busted off on the reef, it was a decent fight, caught on a trinidad 20 and tirelajo with 50lb braid :)

Mcarthy Dhuie

Taken over the weekend on a macarthy eight inch bullhead colour orange two ounce TT Jighead.

Great fight caught on the drop no action must have bounced it on his head.

Yeah

Pt Samson Queenie

Headed out to Point Samson causway for a quick flick on the incoming tide, heaps of queenies but hard to get them to bite.

This one took a soft plastic, the moment it hit the water.

Lots of follow ups but no other hit.

Great 2 hours, time to clear the head.

Mindarie

Had a great day out off mindarie on Sunday with Dan and Darryn. Conditions were great.

Hooked onto some sambos early which is always good to get the blood flowing.

The slaughter chest included a pidgeon pair of dhu's at 12 and 14 kg and 2 black arse, heap of other fish returned.

Good warm up to the exmouth trip!!

Lisa's Harly!

My fiance's harlequin fish...she's only been fishing with me a few times, for a few herring/skippy/tailor in the estuary, but I finally got her out onto the five today. Gave the mack trolling a big bash for no result before anchoring up on the back edge with the berley and the soft plastics. We also got a few skippy and a just size swallowtail...worse things to do on a Monday!

Karratha Countdown - The last of Exmouth

Quick report will fill in more details later.

Saturday: First drop sharked at the Ruby spot, went trolling - raised one 70kg bill of some type out wide.  Got a few dolly's and a barracuda that threw the hook on the jump (thankfully)  Not much else to report, awesome conditions.

Sunday: Spearing at the Rons, awesome conditions - few bluies, lots that were spooky.  Fishing was lit up on sounder but sharks smashing anything decent that ate bait.  Great weekend!

Windy Harbour at Easter

hi all this is my first post here on fish wrecked,

My partner has a hut in her family down in windy harbour, They all head there during christmas time, so we dont really get a chance to stay there much,

we wanted to go along when it wasn't so crowded, and the hut remains empty over easter.

So we headed down for a relaxing weekend, with no phone range, where no body could bother us, also with a bit of fishing.

I invited my dad, step-mum, sisters and my brother along with his partner,

turned out to be a great weekend.

caught a few herring at salmon beach, on the first two nights, awaiting the arrival of the salmon.

We decided to get up early sunday morning, get there before the croud, and hopefully strike something good.

after about half an hour of fishing, my brother caught the first salmon of the day, about 65cm, then not too long after he caught a whopping 93cm, which snapped his old hand me down rod,

he headed back to the hut in the windy harbour settlement, to grab another rod, and got my old man to come down, i stayed back to fish, with no luck :(

and now there was three of us, my old man caught his first. i was stil yet to catch one. with three of us fishing, the minimal bait we had was running out, so we sent the girls to go get more, the bait ran out before i could land a salmon. Luckily a FRESH mullie beached itself, i put it straight on, and as soon as it hit the water i was on,

and brought in a 60cm salmon! a first for myself!

We kept fishing, til about 10am, watching the salmon run, you could see them in the waves as they crashed, was an awesome sight!

my Biggest for the day was just under 85cm

my brother had the win with his 93cm

here are a couple of pics

A nice flathead...

Went out off Hillary's this afternoon, tried some new Dhuie spots but no luck.

My son in law managed the best flattie I have had on my boat, a cracker that went 58 cms.

Smacks my PB by a fair margin, could be a while before I boat one bigger than this.

Big Dollie and more macks!

Hey all

headed offshore to the FADS again today, with weather not as nice as last week, and the swell up, we basically had the FADS to our self (went to 4, and only saw 1 boat) but unfortunately it wasnt firing like  last week, but we managed a couple fish. only one boated, with a couple lost boat side.Came across a pod of about 50 dolhpins hounding bait out there, was a pretty special thing to see im my opinion.

A mate got his PB in dollie, weighing in at 8.3 kg gutted on certified scales.

Also got a another mack, and also lost another at rotto this arvo. Was a mate first, so im sure hes pretty stoked too.

My Pohnpei Blue

I headed out yesterday afternoon for a quick fish and within 30 minutes we hooked up what was estimated to be a 180-200kg Pacific Blue. Unfortunately we lost it a little while later. We were broken-hearted and headed straight home to get inside the reef before dark. With the marlin on my mind I lost some sleep but got to to head out again this morning for another crack. It took a little longer today, about 40 minutes..... Once the lines were cleared I fought it stand-up all the way to the boat, the black magic equalizer helping me out. About half an hour later it was boat side. The best feeling ever for me as I have lost a few since getting over here and this is the first one I've managed to get to the boat. I had never trolled before coming here and I am happy to say that I've reached the pinacle of fishing in the pacific, a blue marlin. I've got wahoo, dolphinfish, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna but this is the best of them all. Now I just have to get a 'larger' pinacle but for now I'm happy.

Greybands from Easter Monday

BEING NAUGHTY!

walked in to bluewater for a casual look-see. Left with a 2012 catalina 4000 and a saltiga 60s.

why does this always happen to me??

Big shark #4 (photos now up)

Got another big one today, was a 2.2m long nose grey shark, tried sorting out the video of the release but gave up for now so when i get home ill put it up.

The greys are psyco they don't tire and even when there on the beach they just won't quit!!!! Took 40 mins to steer him onto the beach. got a few photos of me strugling to drag him up the beach while holding the wind on leader, gave up trying to move him after a while just to dam heavy haha. this guy just would not keep still!!!! at least the big bronzies just lay there and dont do a whole lot.

Only got one more morning to get the 3m+ one before I'm off home ( not sure if my back can even take it hahaha). the weather has started to turn and was drizzling a bit before so i called off fishing tomoro, wet rocks and fishing on my own cause my mate is off to kalbarri is not cool.

all in all very happy with my effort of 4 sharks over 2m from 3 trips to the beach. got over 50 big salmon on lures and baits with all of them on either 10 or 20lb.

cheers Chris.....

snapper at busso jetty!!!

hi guys thought id share some of the picks from busso jetty friday morning.

got there around 6oclock conditions were great and was fishing by 6.30, didnt really get much until around 8 oclock when i had a good bite which quickly snapped me off, about 5min later heard a lad SCREAMING so ran up and saw him pulling over a pinky on a hand line....got up close and saw my rig still hanging out its mouth!!!

was absolutly fuming but pleased for the lad that caught it.

so i walked back all red faced and set uo again, within five minutes had another ripper bit and had a fish on. after around a five min fight i saw it was another pinky and soon after i had the fish on the deck.....i was over the moon!!!!!

and was bigger than the 1st! it was 93cm long and about 8.5kg which was and all round guestimate by the guy at the tackle shop n guys on the jetty.

the locals tell me you dont get them off the jetty very often so thank god i went fishing that morning!!!!

My first King George Whiting

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Went out early from Hillarys on Sunday, and drifted across the weed near Little Island.  Caught three nice squid.  Saved the hoods for salt and pepper squid on Monday and used the legs as fresh bait.

Picked up this 40 cm KGW (my first) out from Scarborough, and a few sandies further out from Hillarys.  Very happy that I didn't waste any money on crap bait and caught it instead....

big shark #3

got this big one last night, was a very hard 2 hour fight with a lot of running back and forward over rocks before i had to sprint to the beach to pull it away from a reef to get it into the surf.

my mate was watching my rod saying weird stuff was happening like the line going a bit loose and slack then off goes the ratchet and then it stoped, i got to my rod and line was slack so wound like crazy and felt a solid weight so i set the hooks, lets just say she wasnt happy having a set of 11/0 hooks in her mouth and took off taking 700m of line against full drag on the torium. managed to get her back into the bay and into the surf after a while and got her on the beach.ooonce on the beach we hurried to get the hooks out take a few photos and struggled to move her back into the water. she swam off fine and headed straight back out to the deeper water.was caught on a fresh salmon fillet on a slide bait rig, after getting the hooks back checked over the gear and my 200lb wind on leader is destroyed, slide clip bent, 400lb wire a fair few of the strands where chewed through and the stop ring at the bottow was starting to bend. just goes to show even the best gear gets destroyed buy huge fish like this. after spending 5 out of 24 hours connected to sharks like this i think today is a well earned rest day.

cheers chris...

A day on the water

Hit the water about 8am from o/reef Heading out to the 100m mark with steve skipper linsey and jody,

Linsey was the first to take blood, And then he hit the big one a tiger shark on50 lbs braid and a  very light finnor rod

The day was great fun with some fish to take back home

Cheers steve for the ride and great day again

big pinky on the bream gear

went out with a flick last night with Ben from CA, he did an awesome job putting me onto my PB snapper.

caught it on my stradic ci4 2500 and okuma precission 2-4 bream setup, put up an epic fight on the light gear.

Ben also lost a big snapper due to pulled hooks

it went 82cm and was in great condition, didn't get the weight of it

First Time for Everything

I have finally got my first size pinkie after years of trying, and it was a bit of a suprise! Headed out from Mindarie at gentlemens hours (08.00) on Monday...missed the early crowd and eased out into the fog with my brother and his wife on board. My darl decided to sleep in! The plan was a troll up and down the place to see if any macks wanted to play....no luck with that after an hour or so.... so it was motor off and a very slow drift roughly south just outside the 3 mile.

15 minutes and half a dozen wrasse later....this guy decided to join the party - 77 cm to the fork, and 7.8 kg on my bathroom scales. Happy fishers!

Prevelly 9/4/12

Got the old boy sorted out to chase some bottom fish off margs yesterday.  Conditions were actually too good for the majority of the day and drifting was hard but good to be out there.  Christened the new xzoga PE2 jig rod on a nice dhu.  Finally got the baby dhu hoodoo off the shoulders.  It took a 100gr caprice in the chartreuse/gold/silver colour.  Talk about a big bend in a little rod!  My old man got to try his new custom rod out and got a little sambo and we reckon he had a big dhu on as well but turned out he had hooked a wrasse and the wrasse got absolutely hammered on the way up.  Aside from that it was pretty quiet, the cooler water has started to run and fish were present on the bottom but were obviously sulking with the cooler water and easter water traffic.  By the end of the day it was getting pretty glassy out there so we decided to head home and have a beer.

First Mack

Been chasing these for the last couple of weeks.. its the end of the season but a few reports still around, thought id hedge my bets and go to jurien for some warmer water yesterday. water temps were 24.2 up there

booze bus and dept of fisheries picking up people on the way back, lucky i was a good boy even though my deckies were well and truly into early celebrations.. fisheries boys said i did well as it was the only mack hed seen all weekend. one guy had a massive dhu on the cleaning tables, would have been well over 20kgs

15 minutes in, bang.. not even on one of my new trolling rigs.. Doh.. but the Opus Bull loaded with 50 pound braid and Shimano Terez heavy spin rod muscled the mack on board within a minute

stoked.. now its time to chase some winter demersals.. She was a meter 9

gorgeous day, the only fish we caught all day. well a heap of wrasse.. but we didnt do any bottom bouncing till after lunch.. we knew we wouldnt have much luck but prime time was reserved for the daddy mack we were all after
