Engine Trim
Submitted by JoRn on Wed, 2009-02-04 21:05hi all,
Before my holiday i took my boat out and the trim switch on the control box was no longer working.
The trim switch is still working on the engine.
Do you think i have to change the whole control box? or is there a simple tilt replacement or change the wiring?
last question - do you guys unplug your battery when the boat is not in use? my dads boat got a simple switch that shuts down the power...is it worthwhile investing in one of these?
whats the worst thing that could happen if i dont unplug it

Epirb Registration
Submitted by big john on Tue, 2009-02-03 17:00Just registered my new 406 MHz epirb online with AMSA.
Very simple, took 5-10 minutes and you get a login for your account which you can then use to update your registration as your details change.
For those who haven't done it yet, the website is:
Surprisingly efficient for a government department.

Epirb news
Submitted by fishy fingers on Tue, 2009-01-27 19:46I just got my new epirb (jumped the que a bit) but just to let you all know GME have just announced today that their battery replacement policy is as follows. if you take in your old one in six years they will take it off you, deregister it, give you a brand new one and register it for you and you will pay the princely sum of $200.00. this is retrospective so if you bought one 5 years ago in twelve months you will get a new one for $200.

I've got a 5.4m profish (http://www.trailcraft.com.au/boats/boat.aspx?model=540profish ) which has a side console. I was wondering if anyone knows where you can get screens for the console?
At the moment i have my sounder and gps mounted on the top of the console and it's starting to get abit wheathered from all the sea spray so am looking for something to protect it.

New Gps help anyone?
Submitted by westline on Thu, 2009-01-08 22:41Gday Guys and Gals, My names Dave and Im new to this great site and i was wondering if anybody could help me with the choice of gps for my new/first boat. Ive always been a mad keen fisho and worked on the water off the wa coast most of my semi adult haha life but have only just bought a decent rig apart from a tinnie or 2 for myself a 5.5 mtre plate ally westlne. Ive been looking at the Lowrance globalmap 5200c (external antenna) or the Hummingbird 785c2x (external antenna) or maybe the Garmin gpsmap 550 (internal antenna).. or can anybody suggest a similar mid price range model?
Has anybody got one of these gps units or know someone who does and are the external antenna miles above the internal antennae? Ive already got a sounder so just after a single colour gps unit which can take map cards,
Any help whatsoever would b greatly appreciated and i look forward to contributing to this very imformative and fun site fishwrecked, Thankyou in advance..

NEW BOAT (MAYBE)
Submitted by herk on Thu, 2009-01-08 15:47Hey peoples i just went and saw the guys at Preston Craft who built my boat i have now. I walked in there and saw a alloy rib. It is an awesome looking boat and looks like it would be pretty good out on the open water. I got talking to then and asked if they could build me a 7.5m walk around. To which he " no problems at all". What does everyone think of these?

Fuel life
Submitted by 7739ian on Tue, 2009-01-06 11:30Having bored the pants off people moaning about how long it has taken to get my boat into the water - it looks like i will launch the weekend after Australia Day. My query is i have a nearly full tank of 50-1 fuel that has sat in the shed for nearly 6 months. Is it useable or too risky? Any advice welcome.

NOR Boat Mechanic Recommendations
Submitted by dagree on Mon, 2009-01-05 22:19I have done the usual search and have found a few old threads but not sure if they are current. I need some minor work done to the boat before we go away in Feb. I used to use a mechanic in Osbourne Park but because of work hours I can't get the boat to him during his work hours.
Can someone recommend a mechanic close to Joondalup that I can try. Have seen/heard a lot of old recommendations for Ernie at Just Marine (Hillaries). Could anyone still recommend him or another mechanic I could try?
Thanks,
David

Submitted by davey on Sun, 2009-01-04 15:29hi all
im planning to convert my outboard to side console control.
the steering is easy enough but im stuck with the throttle/gear shift.
the motor is a mercury 25 (1997 i think) with the gear shift in the throttle twist grip.

no power
Submitted by dakka on Wed, 2008-12-31 11:02hi all
i took my boat out yesterday for the first time in a while its a 15ft ally with a 30 hp 2stroke mariner. i always start it once a week and it always starts. so we launched at palm beach and headed out ,but could only get 10kmph out of it according to the gps, it was going to take an 1hr 25m to go 7kms to the d9. i changed the spark plugs cause i always carry spares being a 2 stroke but no difference. there was a little resistance from the throttle leaver when putting it forward in gear, i was able to push the leaver all the way forward but no power.but it was very hard to get it back to neutral and when i did it just revved its box off sitting there.so i turned it off restarted but it still revving realy high i put it in gear to get back to the ramp and it jumped into gear, i presume it did this because it was revving high made it back alright.now would anyone know what i should look at first at possibly being the cause, either the control box or cables etc etc any info would be greatly apprciated thank you.
dakka

This hurt
Submitted by herk on Tue, 2008-12-30 08:27Hey peoples hope you all had a great xmas.
Boxing day myself and a few mates went to rotto for raftup. What a day it was over there with all the boats tied up together and the alcohol flowing. On the way back once we got into the river my mate asked if he could drive. He has driven my boat in the river plenty of times with me watching on. So i thought why not and let him take the wheel. I ran through what to do as in where the markers are and what side to have them on as i always do with him. I went into the cabin for a min or 2 so i could get change when i heard a bang and the sound of the prop getting bashed. I quickly came back out and seen he had put us on some rocks jusy up river from aquarama:( I tilted the engine up to find my 4 blade stainlees prop to be ummmm well not in the best of shape at all:( So now i have a stuffed prop and a keel that has a chunck out of it. So does anyone know of a place to get the keel fixed and is it possible to fix a stainless prop or should i just not waste my time and just go buy a new one??

As some of you know, I've just newly got into boating etc etc and tomorrow I've decided (weather permitting) to take her out in the Cockburn sound to get a bit of 'sea time' and hopefully some fish A bit nervous about doing this, but I know its the best way to learn stuff. Any advice/ tips from the boaties will be greatly appreciated.

Hole in the boat!
Submitted by Percula on Wed, 2008-12-24 15:07Well actually 2 little holes, about 4mm diameter!!
Not too big but lets lots of water in!
So how do I get this fixed? Do I have to go see a aluminium welder/boat builder?? Is there any other ways to fix this?
Also how does this happen, must have happened in the last month, when I haven't used the boat for a while. I know electrolysis, but how do I prevent this?
Thanks for any help!!

2 stroke outboard issues when cold
Submitted by Brendo on Tue, 2008-12-23 12:54Hey all,
Having some dramas with my outboard when its cold. Last 2 trips out i have started her up no dramas got to the heads at hillaries and its started coughing and spluttering (running ok till then) engine stalls and turn it over a couple of times and rev it up in nuetral and it ends up coming fine and making power as usual. It is fine all day after that!
any ideas? i thought plugs etc but its not on cold start its after its been running for awhile it just breaks down a bit then clears out and is fine. Runs like a dog for the couple of minutes while i rev it and its fine again?
Its a evinrude 90 1996 model.
It's pre mix into the tank the oil injection has been removed before i bought it and this has only happened since i have added fuel/mix recenlty. Running it at 50:1.
I thought maybe it hadnt mixed well in the tank at first but its happened twice now and i'm sure it would have mixed well on the first trip out.
Thanks
Brendo
