Mercruiser Pros and Cons
Submitted by Brooka on Fri, 2009-03-13 10:26Looking at a 18ft boat with a recon (20hrs) 140hp Mercruiser i would be guessing its a 3lt. Has anyone had anything to do with these or no much about them. I have heard to steer clear of them (inboards) but i cant find much info to prove this theory and there seems to be alot out there or maybe the blokes i have talked to are outboard blokes.

Thinkin' of buying a cheap dinghy - advice please?
Submitted by kavman on Thu, 2009-03-12 21:33Hi fishwrecked.
So lately i've been wondering how best to spend my $900 that'll be coming my way - this led me to think about getting myself a cheap small boat.
My question is how likely is it for me to be able to get a boat, trailer and motor for the $900 or maybe even up to $1500?
Also if it's even a possibility, what conditions will I be able to fish with it? (I'm thinking just the river and maybe a little out to sea in calm conditions?)
I've been thinking about getting my skippers ticket anyway but do you need one for all forms of watercraft with a motor?
Cheers guys!
Also...would anybody have any that they'd want to sell!?!?!!! There HAS to be! :) :) :)

UV Protection for Boats
Submitted by big john on Thu, 2009-03-12 17:47Just wondering what some of the other boat owners on here do to reduce UV damage to their canopies, gauges etc when they are not on the water.
Unfortunately my boat is stored in the full sun, so I've had to try and reduce the exposure through an arrangement of tarps and rags. Works well but doesnt look the best.
Obviously a full cover would be great but I'm a bit scared to get one priced up!

Trailer Plug Maintenance?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sun, 2009-03-08 10:13I've had my boat now for 3.5 years and during that time, I must have replaced/rewired my trailer pug at least 4 times due to corrossion.
Since there's a wealth of boat/boat maintenance gurus in here, what do YOU do/recommend to keep 'the internals' corrosion free?

Navman Sounders
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2009-02-28 14:10Just got the new unit to get out to the Dampier Archi. Come with a Navman 4380 Fishie. I have not used this before and I am happy to upgrade if needed, but mostly will be fishing in <50m H2O. What do you experts out there think of this unit.
Cheers for all help

Ultraflex Steering
Submitted by tommytomato on Sat, 2009-02-28 10:49Hey guy's got a couple of questions
The steering wheel is fitted which looks good, now I'm about to fit the cable
it talks about the helm and the jacket, does the plastic white jacket feed through the helm unit ? then you feed the cable through
installation kit is not that in diagrams.
Other question, who ever made the boat has place fibreglass tubes up under the side edge on the boat, should I feed the cable through so it out of the weather

Removing broken bolts
Submitted by tommytomato on Fri, 2009-02-27 16:08I had removed the old steering cable last week and one of the bolts that hold the steering backet at the rear hull has broken ( well rusted ) how do you remove bolt it with out doing any damage to the rear section of the hull, can you drill it out ? any ideas please.
I got my cable to today a full kit so now I would like to fit it and get out and catch me some Squid before all you blokes catch them all, seen some good reports so far.

Battery mat?
Submitted by alfred on Fri, 2009-02-27 12:21
Due to the seas here, most boat rides are hard and bumpy, so the question I have is -
Do any of you cushion your batteries?
I was thinking of putting some fatigue mats under my batts and wonder if it would make the batts last longer.

Internal rod storage
Submitted by big john on Thu, 2009-02-26 15:50Being someone who likes to have all my bases covered, and the fact that I might try several different fishing techniques on any given day, I'm looking for some creative storage ideas for my trolling rods in the cabin area of my vessel (either upright or horizontal).
Does any one have any solutions that work for them? If so, some pics would be appreciated.

Jonah
Submitted by 7739ian on Mon, 2009-02-23 14:23I have been rabbiting on for months about finally getting the old Quinny out Geographe Bay. Sunday was the big day, fueled up, esky full of bait and ice and the wife keen to have a go at a KG or two. Now it starts - New lights packed up - still it's easy to sneak through Busso early on a Sunday. Next i asked the wife if she had put the bungs in - she had - on the rear seat where they sat while water poured in. Fixed that, launched and tried to start the motor - no go, could not get the priming bulb hard so had the wife toss out the anchor about a 100m off the beach. Cover off and lo and behold, the fuel bayonet on the motor had lost a circlip and dropped inside the cover. I have medium size fingures - to get the connection back through the cowling you need size SMALL. Towed back in by a top guy in a pimp boat - then home with tail between the legs an hour after leaving. Goes to show even though i had drum tested the motor last Saturday - things can go wrong. Now it's Monday with all the long weekenders clogging the ramp.

VHF Radio channels
Submitted by Archie on Sun, 2009-02-22 19:35Hey guys,
I'm looking at putting together a list of VHF channels to post near my radio on the boat. The missus recently commented that she wouldn't know who or how to call if it turned to poo and I was tied up (I think she might have meant literally). I thought it might be handy to have a full list of the comonly used channels around Perth. Can anyone help out with where I can find a local channel list?

GPS Antenna
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2009-02-15 08:11Just curious if anyone has tried placing their boat GPS antenna in a shoot thru the windscreen position just like a car based GPS.
If so did it pick up the satellites ok or was it a drop in/drop out type of reception?
Just looking to save myself some drilling and cable running.

anti fowling
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2009-02-10 07:40Just wondering if anyone knows of any temp anti fowling products?
couple of people have said to me there is some spray on, and paint on / rub off anti fowling that lasts a couple weeks?
Anyone heard of such things?
Anyone knows what the affects of anti fouling a hull is??
The boat im looking at buying was once anti-fouled (As it was in a pen), but now will be a trailer boat. It has had theanti-fouling removed, and the boat has had the bottom re-done (Not sure how)
It is a fibre glass hull so not sure if there are any after effects from anti fouling? I do know while it has the anti fouling on, it does reduce speed and increases fuel usage.
Any info would be great!!
Cheers

please help, poor radio signal strength?
Submitted by collie on Sun, 2009-02-08 11:07hey guys.
i have a 27meg (GME GX294 i think) radio and when i leave shore i can log on fine with sea rescue but when im out deep i dont get a strong enough signal to be in touch with them cause im a long way out. obviously this is a big problem and im not going offshore until its fixed. i can however hear other boast talking to sea rescue, i assume they are closer to me which is why i can hear them. could this be a result of me having weak battery power?? becuase i know my betteries are not very good or do you guys think it might be another problem. i have only had the boat 6 months and didnt have problems before butthen again wasnt going out so far so its hard to tell.
thanks alot.

Furuno 585 Screen Replacement
Submitted by Humdinger on Sat, 2009-02-07 21:36Hi,
I've just got a new boat and have transferred my trusty Furuno 585 accross from my old tub. The screen is a bit scratched up, so was wondering if anybody had replaced a screen on the Furunos before and if so what did it cost?
Looks a bit sad sitting next to a brand new 12" Multifunction display.
