Mercury Verado - Battery issues.
Submitted by The_Wanderer on Wed, 2009-10-07 20:53Not to happy at the moment yet another problem with our less than one year old boat.
The old man has a 250-hp Verado 08 model. He has been having major problems with the batteries going flat when the boat hasn't been used for a few weeks. He travels interstate and overseas with work so can't always use the boat as much as he would like. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Oh and he has had it back at the dealer twice and each time they have assured him the problem has been fixed. Has anyone else had similar problem with the verados or another manufacturer?
Cheers for any advice

VHF marine radio licence
Submitted by Starbug on Wed, 2009-10-07 20:45
looks like the ACMA is concidering changes to access for the VHF marine band by recreational users.
http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_311904
It's only a discussion paper, and it may take years before any changes come about. But now is the time to have your say in the matter.

tinny's what setup works best
Submitted by Rig on Thu, 2009-10-01 18:55Hi everyone
Like alot of others on the site i am looking at buying a tinny soon about the 4 - 5 metre mark. There are a few different setups around like
1 rear tiller control boat
2 front conrol runabout
3 centre console
4 side console
I have fished in a number of these styled boats with tiller control giving the most room in a small boat but it can be hard to see ahead at times, where as front conrols are easy if your by yourself and prob block some spray. the side console looks like it might suit me better.
does anyone have any advice on this subject and any other info that might help my out when choosing. i am looking at spending hopefully up to 10K and wont be buying for a few months yet.
Cheers Rig

dinghy questions
Submitted by eddie on Tue, 2009-09-29 12:23Hey guys,
Till recently asked about boat rebuilds and got some great advice. I'm looking for similar advice regarding buying/rebuilding a dinghy.
here's my situation. I enjoy fishing from beach/rocks and do this fairly often. I have a good friend who has a nice boat, and we go out wide together about 10 times a year. But I've been thinking that it would be fun to buy an old dinghy w/trailer and fix it up as a nice fishing boat for inshore and river fishing. My budget is small, but I'm fairly patient. I have virtually no knowledge of electronics/motors, but I have another good friend who wants to undertake this with me who is an electrician. He's fairly confident he can deal with any electrical issues with boat or trailer, as well as minor motor repairs. I'm just in the early thinking stages of this project, not really planning to buy anytime soon.
A few questions:
What are the best ways to look for a cheap dinghy? I've mainly just been surfing the quokka right now...are there any good online resources for Perth area? btw, I'm in Ballajura which is NOR.
Would I be better off getting a boat and trailer regardless of the quality of the engine, and then just look for a good engine seperately?
I've seen some pics of dinghys that have really been fitted out well for fishing. Are there resources for good ideas of what to do regarding this? if so, would anyone care to share? or are people just doing their own thing? I've definitely got some ideas of what I want to do, but new ideas can't hurt, eh?
also, are there questions that I'm not asking, that I need to consider?
Like I said, I'm willing to save my money and wait for a good deal....no real hurry here. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
I'm happy to hear any and all words of advice on this!

Submitted by solly on Tue, 2009-09-29 00:53Hi guys
Im chasing if anybody has this problem, when recovering my boat( 7 metre fibreglass )leans to the right ,I have spent alot of time at the boat ramp and tried everything from the guide rollers just out of water to make contact early to drowning the trailer. The boat is on a sealink multi roller trailer and the whole setup is only 3 weeks old. When sitting on trailer all the rollers are touching and it sits great so I havent started adjusting yet.
any ideas would be welcome.

Boat rebuilds
Submitted by till on Sat, 2009-09-26 20:15Moo,
so next winter, rather than mow my lawn, clean the gutters and all the usual when you can't fish, I was thinking about doing a bit of boat reno. I've been reading up on stringer and transom rebuilds and the like. I was thinking of picking up a bomb hull and trailer next winter in the 5-5.5m range and working on it from there.
Anyone else interested in the like know of any good reference sites and tips for supplies around town?
Laters,
till

Suitable Car to small boat.
Submitted by Mark K on Wed, 2009-09-16 23:23I have a Quintrex 480 Freedom Sport. At present we use a v8 Caprice to tow it and this does it very easily.
We are looking at getting a smaller car in the next six months and I want to make sure it will be alright to tow the boat. At times we take the boat to Dongara or Esperance.
The car we are favouring at the moment is a Peugeot 407 wagon, 2L diesel.
Does anyone know if this will be suitable to tow the boat?

Marine Painter
Submitted by Jeff Hugo on Tue, 2009-09-15 20:21Hi All
I have receintly purchased a Haines signature 575F, the hull has been antifouled, the antifoul has been removed by soda blasting.
The Gelcoat overall is in good condition, however is thin in a few areas, so I intend to get it sealed with epoxy and sprayed in 2 pac.
Can anyone recommend a marine painter NOR who will do a good job.
My short list so far is hillaries boat lift, GT fibreglass and spot on in Malaga.
Any experiences with this type of repair would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Jeff

lowrance chartplotter problem, help!
Submitted by Adonis on Mon, 2009-09-14 11:16Hey guys,
Rocked up to woodies on sunday to chase some pinkies before the squid comp and as i turn on my chartplotter it comes up with a message like this:
Made me realise how much i really do rely on it for navigation. Anyway i have checked all the wires and they are all fine which leads me to thinking it maybe the actual unit or gps reciever that is cactus? Has anyone ever had this problem before? I went out about a week previously and it worked fine. Since then i have done nothing different except i didn't put the cover on the boat?
Any ideas???
Cheers,
Pete

TROPHY...or Bay Liner!
Submitted by Baron Custom on Sat, 2009-09-05 19:47I was going to buy a trophy, 10 year hull warrantee, great looking, load's of extras... Then i read some stuff on the net about them lining the bay's, On the bottom that is etc, etc... Are thay just a bit jealous or is there something to this? How can some of these boats be disasters and others fantastic if they are all off the same line? They say entry level boat hu, new it would be the most expensive thing i own apart for my house. If I am to buy one new, I want to know that my toy is a safe one, not just pretty. Are these boats any good? Heard some folk (owners) that they are fantastic ra ra, also heard some horror stories of how they have neally sunk as new. I have also read that I am better off spending my money buying the hull I want, doing it up and re-powering with a 4 stroke. I would love to hear some stories, good or bad of your experiences first hand with any model of these trophies. At the moment I am re-doing a small Baron Sportsman (19ft), but eventually would love to buy a new boat, just very scared of spending that much money and being crushed with disappointment. I don't expect to make money when buying a new boat, but have to know I am safe and that there are some sort of workmanship standards. All comments appreciated. Cheers, Darryl

Boat length measurement
Submitted by kane on Sun, 2009-08-30 03:48At the recent boat show in Perth it seemed obvious to me that some boats of the stated same size were bigger than others.
I think from memory chivers and coraline maybe were more generous than some others with boats claiming to be the same size.
With this in mind I have always thought boats were measured at the water line??????????
I guess the reason I am extra curious now is I have been looking at building an ally kit boat, you know the pre cut ones you weld togethor in your workshop at home...
here is one of the options I am looking at. It is a 6.5 metre cat....but is it really 6.5 metres? it shows the total length of the hull to be 6.5 but not the water line. Is this normal or am I right in thinking its probably more like an ohnest 6 metre boat?

Fuel Flow
Submitted by Rick on Tue, 2009-08-18 20:53Have been toying with the idea of fitting a fuel flow meter of some description in the boat.
Have a good idea of fuel consumption against miles travelled. More for watching fuel usage at different rev ranges and trim of the motor.
Just wondering how many boats are running them and how much benefit it is ?. The motor I'm running is a Mercruiser 4.2.
I'm sure there would be a few different types out there, curious to know peoples thoughts and experiences

Fury 282 Centre Console '2009 WA boat of the year'
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2009-08-18 09:24For those who made the trip down to the boat show, probably would have noticed the Fury 282 (28ft) Centre console won 2 awards this year.
WA 2009 Boat of the year and WA 2009 Innovative design awards.
Fury Custom boats and westbuilt are having an open demo day at point walter this weekend 10am - 3pm this Sunday for any who are interested.
I own a Fury 26 cc and can say they are very well built boats, and great quality. Have experianced quite a few different glass cc's and have not found one to perform aswell on the water as the Fury.
The 282 at the boat show looked sensational!!!! and is Locally built too..
Anyone interested go down for a look and have a chat to scott.
