window damage - glass curved
Submitted by johno on Sun, 2010-01-10 11:30Hi All
Just wanted to know if anyone can recommend a repairer for boat windows, I shattered my wind screen on my Haines Hunter, being a tempered glass (Taylor Custom Clear Curved) - ouch must be expense!, the boat has insurance so it will get fixed just wondering if there is a local guy that I can refer the insurance company to, also I am keen as mustard to head back out on the water, call them during the week just waiting for the next steps
Cheers

Boat/Trailer Latches
Submitted by mako magic on Sat, 2010-01-09 18:05Been toying with the options of getting one of those latches that makes it easier for single handed launch and retrieve.
most times i go out its not too hard though find its getting a bit of a pain climbing thru the screen to secure the boat then go back to turn the engine off and lift it up then get back out the boat and drive the car away,
i know theres a few brands and styles out there so what would people recommend.
also remembering my boat is 6.7m

Trailer brakes
Submitted by Tandawg on Wed, 2010-01-06 19:12Hello all,
I`ve just changed the brake pads on my trailer. Driving today, its grinding a bit too much, so a couple of questions spring to mind:
1. How much does the tensioning nut at the front of the draw bar need to be adjusted?
2. The result of 1. will determine the amount the piston will move before pushing on the brake lever.
3. There is a small handle near the calliper. How much free play should there be?
I know that there should be a bit of grinding on wheel rotation but when you can hear it whilst driving, I think thats abnormal.
Regards
Chris

Yamaha V MAX SHO
Submitted by HuggyB on Wed, 2010-01-06 11:55Anyone seen the new Yamaha V Max SHO (200/225/250) in action yet? Came across it while comparing outboards for the old man and his new boat.
Looks like yamaha are going to take on the e-tecs dominance in the bass fishing arena (lower weight, better holeshot, better economy etc) with a 4 stroke.
It is a really nice looking unit.

Welcome Home Baby
Submitted by Cammos on Tue, 2010-01-05 00:14Well after a long, long wait she is finally parked up on the driveway. This photo is one when it was for sale in the yard, but I hope to get some in water shots soon.
It is a Southwind SF20 with a 200hp Yamaha 2 Stroke. Goes crazy fast by my standards.
A bit stuck on a name for her. Any ideas?

Need help - outboard pod
Submitted by Adonis on Mon, 2010-01-04 08:53Hey all, took the boat out saturday and noticed the outboard pod has a large crack in it. Seeing as the boat is quite older and glass I was thinking i should probably get a new one put on. Does anyone know a contact of someone who builds these? Also i was thinking of maybe getting an ally pod instead of glass as the bow rides quite high, any suggestions?
Cheers,
Pete

plate ali recommendations
Submitted by HuggyB on Fri, 2010-01-01 15:55The old man has asked me what I would recommend as far as an ali boat goes. To be honest, all the boats I have been out in have been f/g so other than a few generic ones I was at a bit of a loss as to what I should recommend him! One thing though, I have advised him to get plate ali rather than pressed ali and he is happy to head down that path. I've tried to steer him towards a f/g, but he is pretty adamant he wants ali for some reason or another (wont tell me why?). I'll continue to push him f/g way, but in the meantime I need something to get him going on with his plate ali's.
Basics are between 5m and 6m long, must be brand new and have a cabin up front (no island cabs or c/c). Budget is reasonably flexible, but I reckon he'll max out @ $70k.

Exxy to Karratha Help
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2009-12-31 11:06Hi Guys
What a way to have to end the stay in Exxy. Transmission on the car wont according to the mechanics in Exxy make it back to Kcity with the boat in tow. Plan ats to leave the boat in Exxy with Adds and drive to Kcity, get the trannie fixed and drive back to get the boat next weekend.
However if there is any members in Exxy heading back to Kcity that could possibly assist it would be great. Good reward.
Mullows is up here and I will try him but if anyone can help great.
Cheers and a Happy New Year. (Happier than mine atm).

Outboard motor flush?
Submitted by West Oz Mark on Tue, 2009-12-29 09:39I just returned from a trip to Esperance with my tinny where I ventured out several time. I washed the outboard down but as I had no way of flushing the motor I left it until I returned home.
I am looking at taking a trip over East for several weeks with the boat and I would like to know how do I flush the motor when I don't have my wheelie bin?(Not enough room in the camper).
I have a Johnson 8hp outboard but looking upgrading to maybe a 15hp.
Thanks...Mark

anchor retrieving on 6m cat
Submitted by blue seal on Mon, 2009-12-28 11:09
I"ve got an older 6m cat and find it a pain anchoring. I attach a bouy to the anchor rope and tie off at the front of the boat. when i want to move i have to get the ball away so as it does not go between the hulls, then i have to gaff the rope and tie it off to a special cleat i have on the rear starboard side. Once thats done its a matter of going around and pull the rope in before it can sinks again.
Pardon my ignorance but is there an easier way as a winch cannot be fitted, i have had 3 operation and i'll have another the way i'm going.
Hope someone can give an old dog a new trick.

How to survey a marine diesel before purchase or troubleshoot - Free report
Submitted by yachtwork on Wed, 2009-12-23 01:23Technician Engine Analysis Checklist
For the rest of the free repot and photos see-
http://www.tongacharter.com/report-alalisis.htm
An engine analysis is an advanced system of inspecting our boats
drive train. We perform these tests to help catch pending mechanical
issues before we leave the dock. An analysis is much more comprehensive
than a typical “pre-departure peak” at the engine. We are
going to not only visually inspect our engine, but also take a series
of measurements that become our baseline for future tests. Our goal
is use this engine analysis as a system to help make easy informed decisions
about our boats drive system.
To begin you should have on-hand as much of the following as possible:
- · Camera
- · Notepad
- · Your collection of electrical meters
- · A 0-3 bar pressure gauge (if your engine has a turbo)
- · An infer red temperature gauge
- · Any other special tools you might have
- · A few rags, and spray cleaner
The steps to performing an engine analysis:
1. Visual inspection
2. Pre inspection
3. Bollard pull
4. Analyzing the numbers
Visual inspection
This is a general once over of the engine looking for blatant flaws.
Open the engine room door, look, feel and smell
Look for oil drips or other fluid under the engine. Inspect for obvious
cracked hoses. Give a gentle bend where a hose attaches to the engine
and look for cracks in the rubber cover. Check the fan belts for cracks
and loose hose clamps. Grab the alternator pulley and see if it will
spin free on the belt. If it does then the belt is worn or loose.
Feel the inside of the engine room for oil film. Touch the areas of
the engine you can’t see feeling for rust or salt trails.
Smell for any burned chemical type odor. Smells can be difficult to
locate, but in general any burnt, oily, or diesel smells should be searched
out. A good nose can tell the difference between a hot belt and a hot
wire.
Look over the complete engine for oil leaks. Pay particular attention
to the front seal, and the area between the gearbox and engine. Leaks
in the front or rear seal can mean a coming engine rebuild. Inspect
the head to block connection looking for oil or water trails.
Take photos from all angles as a base line for later use.
This is the point where many an engine inspection ends, but in an analysis
we want better scrutiny to help build confidence in our propulsion system.
Our next series of checks focus on fluid inspections
Oil
Oil is the lifeblood of our engine. It lubricants, cools and quiets
our engine. But how do we know if the oil is doing its job?
Begin by pulling the dipstick. Smell for signs of diesel odor. Pinch
a small dab of oil between your index finger and thumb and expand slowly
to see how far you can spread the oil before the gap opens. Compare
this gap to new oil and take down the difference for your notes. This
is a crude method of checking viscosity and diesel intrusion.
Open the oil fill and look inside the cap for water droplets, condensation
or worse, a gray gooey substance indicating water penetration into the
oil. Put a small drop of oil on a paper towel and compare it to a new
oil drop. Note the amount of black carbon and any shiny deposits.
A more careful inspection can include an inside look at the oil filter.
Next time you change oil keep the old filter. Leave it to drain upside
down then cut open the canister and look at the inside of element. It’s
the inside that will contain any heavy deposits or worse, metal shavings.
Take photos for later comparison.
Immediately after start up note the oil pressure and again during our
bollard pull test and lastly immediately upon reducing throttle after
our bollard pull test. Does the gauge needle dip? It should remain steady
from start up and through all the following tests. A dipping gauge can
indicate a faulty pressure release, or worse, worn engine bearings.

Volvo QL Trim Tabs Fitting
Submitted by mejutty on Mon, 2009-12-21 15:11Hi,
I've posted this in a couple of other places so one more won't hurt. I'm in Perth NOR and I am looking to fit some 300 volvo ql trim tabs to my boat. Its an Extreme 665 hardtop (aka 650 game king on www.extremeboats.co.nz) Just getting some quotes and being new to boating don't know what prices I should expect for fitting. So far have been quoted $600 for fitting and then parts which was around $900. Can anyone advise on what price I should expect for fitting or can recommend someone??.
