Marine Mechanic Needed
Submitted by boyscout on Sat, 2010-05-08 08:00Hi guys, I just purchased my first boat. It is a work in progress.
As it is only my first boat I am looking for a mechanic to come to my house, have a look at the engine, the steering. Basically an over all look at it.
As I understand it the motor need a good looking at. The steering needs attention too.
I am not looking at a service or any particular work done.
I would like to pay a mechanic to come round check it out. Do a once over and quote me on the work that will be required.
I am not too sure of the motor brand or model as it isn't branded.
If anyone is keen please message me and I will call you.

Trailcraft powers ahead
Submitted by Brett Martin on Wed, 2010-05-05 13:33Hello Everyone - My name is Brett Martin and i am the owner (past present and future) of Trailcraft Boats.
Since i started Trailcraft over 10 years ago, i have often logged on to different forums to read what people are saying about Trailcraft. I have never included myself within the forum discussions because i believe it best that a forum run independantly of someone who has a vested interest in giving opinions. I would like to be a part of the forum in the future, but it will only be on the basis of everyone knowing that i am the owner of Trailcraft and my obvious thinking that Trailcraft is the best.
Their has been alot of miss-information written about Trailcraft and i thought this a great opportunity for everyone to hear it from the "horses mouth". As with most boat manufacturers - Trailcraft has had a tough time through the GFC - the good news is we have come through this period stronger and better - a bit wiser and a bit leaner.
*We have been and are currently producing boats.
*We have retained "selectively" the prodominance of our Australian dealer network.
*We have increased our warranty from 3-5 years on all new boats produced
*We are continuing to support our brand and warranty - now and in the future
*We will remain a national powerhouse brand.
I would like to thank all of you for your supportive - favourable and constructive comments in the past.
To the existing Trailcraft owners (6000 australia wide) - i would like to thank you for your loyalty and hope you get many more hours enjoyment from your boat.
Thanks everyone - Cheers Brett

Dicky Lowrance LCX-25C
Submitted by Trigger-Happy on Sat, 2010-05-01 11:19I have a real niggly problem with my Lowrance LCX-25C combo unit. The depth sounder will only pick up the bottom accurately down to about 8 meters.
I have checked all connections and transducer etc. Also played around with the bottom lock, range, sensitivity etc. Does anyone have a magic bullet to fix this.
The next step for me will be an adjustment (few solid whacks) with the fish pacifier if I can't work it out soon. Appreciate any help.

Bearing buddie covers?
Submitted by mako magic on Thu, 2010-04-22 16:02Got some new bearing buddies today getting ready to get the trailer up to scratch for the long tow to exmouth in just over a couple of weeks.
in the pack the buddies came with dust covers, but i was aware that they need to work with the water pressure once submerged to compress and keep the water out?
am i right or is it OK to use these covers also?

Advice 420 dory
Submitted by Reefmonkey on Sun, 2010-04-11 12:08Recently purchased a new bare hull 420 dory for a weekend away/travelling rig. I'm currently in the process of fitting it out to the way i want it with sounders and such and will be looking it power it soon.
Has any one have any opinions on powering a dory, what work for them and what didn't, what could've/would've been better and such?
We hired a 420 last year and took it for a spin off tantabiddi it was powered with a 25 4st honda and did well with two plus icebox and two dive kits.
Budget is around 3k give or take a couple of hundred so will go a two stroke preferably a yamaha as my 5m boat i repowered with a yamaha 70 a few years ago and have never had an issue so i trust the brand.
Also main features I want is easy access gear selector, needs a alternator/rectifier to keep the battery charged to run the electrics, brand new and price!
So far the winner is the 25st 2 carb yammie unless i can be persuaded by those with expiriences.
Main questions i have are:
Is it worth sacraficing the exta carb for 5 more HP
Mercs have the gear selector it the throttle which is a plus but i have no expiriences with running portable merc
Mariner and CV yammies the selector is on the side of the motor=bad
Standard Yamaha gear selector is at base of tiller= good!
I've done the ringing around dealers for the best prices and anyway the options are:
2 cylinder 1 carb
30hp merc elecrtic start at 3590
30hp mariner 2890 +200 to be fitted with rectifier 3090
25hp cv yamaha 3100 plus 150 for rectifier
30hp cv yamaha 3500 plus 150
2cylinder 2 carb
25hp yamaha 3300 altenator/rectifier standard
3cyl
30hp yamaha alt/rect standard 3900
What would you do? what have you done? what would u do different?
Input greatly appreciated
Thanks
Dave :)

boat questions
Submitted by oldsalty on Tue, 2010-03-30 09:15Hi everyone,
I am in the process getting my boat ready for an extended trip along the north west WA coast this winter. Its a tabs territory pro 485 side console 80hp which has mainly been used on the east coast where boat ramps and conditions are pretty user friendly.
I have seen some interesting beach launching at places in the NW and am thinking i need,
A tyre jockey wheel for beach launching plus some heavy rope if u get in trouble,
The boat will be used mainly for light off shore work as it was on the east coast but is there anything in particlular you guys use that i may not know of for over there?
any info much appreciated

Stern drives Vs 4 Stroke outboards
Submitted by Tandawg on Thu, 2010-03-25 12:23Hi all,
The thought has come across to upgrade from the 5.5m to something bigger for the family.
Currently I have a 115H yamaha 4 stroke and very happy with it.
Investigating a craft with a Mercruiser stern drive. 5.3L I think for a 6.8m ally. Probably around 220HP.
Any pros and cons of the above as I have never had a stern drive before.
Thank you
Chris
