Cracked Hull, Please help
Submitted by Just1morecast on Thu, 2010-04-22 13:11Hi everyone, was cleaning the front yard yesterday whilst having a chat when we noticed a crack probably the size of 10cm. Im not sure it's cruicial but just having a crack makes me weary. If anyone know's a good person that fixes these types of cracks let me know. Hope it's not expensive as my navara is setting me back $1300 and that's only because we are paying cash i was quoted $1800
Ive added a few piccies to show
Thanks for any advice

Advice 420 dory
Submitted by Reefmonkey on Sun, 2010-04-11 12:08Recently purchased a new bare hull 420 dory for a weekend away/travelling rig. I'm currently in the process of fitting it out to the way i want it with sounders and such and will be looking it power it soon.
Has any one have any opinions on powering a dory, what work for them and what didn't, what could've/would've been better and such?
We hired a 420 last year and took it for a spin off tantabiddi it was powered with a 25 4st honda and did well with two plus icebox and two dive kits.
Budget is around 3k give or take a couple of hundred so will go a two stroke preferably a yamaha as my 5m boat i repowered with a yamaha 70 a few years ago and have never had an issue so i trust the brand.
Also main features I want is easy access gear selector, needs a alternator/rectifier to keep the battery charged to run the electrics, brand new and price!
So far the winner is the 25st 2 carb yammie unless i can be persuaded by those with expiriences.
Main questions i have are:
Is it worth sacraficing the exta carb for 5 more HP
Mercs have the gear selector it the throttle which is a plus but i have no expiriences with running portable merc
Mariner and CV yammies the selector is on the side of the motor=bad
Standard Yamaha gear selector is at base of tiller= good!
I've done the ringing around dealers for the best prices and anyway the options are:
2 cylinder 1 carb
30hp merc elecrtic start at 3590
30hp mariner 2890 +200 to be fitted with rectifier 3090
25hp cv yamaha 3100 plus 150 for rectifier
30hp cv yamaha 3500 plus 150
2cylinder 2 carb
25hp yamaha 3300 altenator/rectifier standard
3cyl
30hp yamaha alt/rect standard 3900
What would you do? what have you done? what would u do different?
Input greatly appreciated
Thanks
Dave :)

anyone get a hail damged car?
Submitted by wide open on Thu, 2010-04-08 14:43i was wondering if anyone else bought a hail damaged car
my grandad picked up a ssangyong actyon sports turbo diesel for fishing for close to half price, he's very happy with the car and it pulls the boat easy, all it had was lots of hail dents on the bonnet and roof, but great for fishing
anyone else get a bargain with the hail damaged cars

boat questions
Submitted by oldsalty on Tue, 2010-03-30 09:15Hi everyone,
I am in the process getting my boat ready for an extended trip along the north west WA coast this winter. Its a tabs territory pro 485 side console 80hp which has mainly been used on the east coast where boat ramps and conditions are pretty user friendly.
I have seen some interesting beach launching at places in the NW and am thinking i need,
A tyre jockey wheel for beach launching plus some heavy rope if u get in trouble,
The boat will be used mainly for light off shore work as it was on the east coast but is there anything in particlular you guys use that i may not know of for over there?
any info much appreciated

Stern drives Vs 4 Stroke outboards
Submitted by Tandawg on Thu, 2010-03-25 12:23Hi all,
The thought has come across to upgrade from the 5.5m to something bigger for the family.
Currently I have a 115H yamaha 4 stroke and very happy with it.
Investigating a craft with a Mercruiser stern drive. 5.3L I think for a 6.8m ally. Probably around 220HP.
Any pros and cons of the above as I have never had a stern drive before.
Thank you
Chris

Pajero 1996 V6 3000
Submitted by crasny1 on Wed, 2010-03-24 20:00Just trying to get an idea what it might be worth?
Has had the gasket BLOWN. Also might need an exhaust. Brakes not to cool. Brand new tyres x 2 and almost brand new for the rest. Car inside spik.
Been our fish mobile for ages and she has let go.
Has huge sentimental value but now have a Landie 200 S and cant ever complain (apart from the $$$$$).
Passion feels fix it, sense says take it to the wreckers.
Hope you can help because I fix other things not cars (even though I used to Rally like mad)

Boat Trailer tyre pressures
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2010-03-19 10:17Hi all
Bloody confused now and thought I would post the question.
I have a single axle Dunbier trailer for a traily 5.4 centre cab.
Trying to make sure the pressures are OK on the tyres. Sometimes they look flat but the pressures are OK from a car perspective.
Now I have heard conflicting stories about what the pressures in a trailer should be and I dont know who to believe.
Currently at 36PSI.
Cheers

Electrical problem on my boat
Submitted by Simo_ on Sun, 2010-03-14 08:00I took the boat out last night to do some squidding, about 30min in I lost all power to the gps, radio and everything else. These are the things that I had on when it happened, top and side nav lights, deck and cabin lights, sounder, gps, stereo, VHF radio.
One of the squid sprayed some ink so I turned on the deck wash and then everythink went black.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Rod storage positions in dinghy
Submitted by beejay on Fri, 2010-03-12 10:57So i've just got myself a 4m dinghy and am going throught he process of fitting it out.
I am after ideas of where to place rod holders for storage of rods when on the move. I have seen the recent photo's of Milsies dinghy refit where he has them accross the bow and others that have them in similar areas but looking through the forrest of rods when on the move doesn't appeal to me (although that may be the only place for them).
Do you small boat crews just place them in the standard trolling holders etc or store them elsewhere in purpose built spots. Ideas?

New Reef Hunter Boats
Submitted by wazzbat on Tue, 2010-03-09 20:58Started looking around for a new boat this week. Hoping to talk the old man into trading the old girl in for a new one. I was gonna chip in a bit so we could get something half decent. Maybe around the $50,000 mark. But I could be dreaming cause I have'nr spoken to him about it yet.
Anyway, I stumbled across this new brand of boats "Reef Hunter". Went and spoke to the guys (at Dinghy World - Como) who are having them made and they said they bought the old Trailcraft press went they went broke. Apparently they have started up again though. The guys reckon there are a few differences between thier boats and Trailcrafts'. They are using 4mm plate sides instead of 3mm and they can upgrade the bottom to 5 or 6mm if you wanna pay a bit more. The ribs are fully welded instead of tacked either end. And they fill under the floor with foam. They haven't spaired any expenses in the fitout either apparently.
Unfortunately their first boat was having some finishing touches done and wasn't at their yard so I couldn't look but I will hopefully see it next week. They said it wasn't ready cause they advertised it too early to try and beat the release of the new Trailcraft boats. Sounds like these boats might be worth a look. I'm looking forward to seeing one. Being a smaller manufacturer, you might get a bit better service than other larger manufacturers too - in terms of customising and getting exactly what you want.
Here is an advert for it - Reef Hunter
Not sure how these will compare to other similar boats in price and specs cause I haven't started looking too seriously at other boats. I will follow up and let you know what I think.

engine noob q's
Submitted by Blacky on Tue, 2010-03-09 19:10noticed today that the outboard (yam 150 2 stroke) has something i thought was water dripping from the very bottom of it, just under the prop. (Its not like a continuous drip, probably 8 drips on the pavers over 2 days) Had a closer look and it seems to have a tiny bit of oil in it.
Its very clear and i did mistake it for water at first.
i guess what im asking is if this is bad?? i did hose down the engine 2 days ago after taking it out. and its the first time its sat in this spot for 2 days....not sure if its just me....
Any thoughts??
