Submitted by Bones76 on Sun, 2010-03-07 16:38G'day guys,
Handle to trailer winch "fell" off last Monday... Having issues finding one that will fit as most retailers only have handles with a hex head connection...

WTB Boat
Submitted by dtr on Fri, 2010-03-05 12:28If you had a budget up to $75,000 for a trailer boat and you wanted to do both creek and out wide fishing (up in the Pilbara), what would the recommendation from the Fishwrecked crew be?
What max hp would you put on it if it was going to be used for both creek and out wide?

got my skippers ticket
Submitted by Blacky on Thu, 2010-03-04 19:19my mrs and i got our skippers ticket today! wasn't as hard as i thought. One/two runs through the book and a bit of Q/A with the mrs and we got through it ok. Was pretty windy so picking up the "man over-board" was pretty funny. Oh and we had a nice crowd over watching from the Breakwater in hillarys.

Fish finder advice
Submitted by beejay on Thu, 2010-03-04 14:51I recently picked up a 4m dinghy as my first boat. Yeh! The boat is basically stock which gives me the chance to turn it into my own little fishing machine the way I like it.
One of the first things I want to do is put a fish finder in it however therein lies my problem as I don't know what I don't know about fish finders.
When I go shopping around what are the questions I need to be asking?
What are essential items that the fish finder should have?
Do I really need a colour sounder? I want one because they look to have better resolution etc but I am only guessing.
What do I need to know about transponders?
Is there anything else I need to know?
Sorry for the load of questions but I really have no idea about them. Then comes the hard part about learning to drive the bloody thing!
Budget I will determine later after I have a better idea of what I NEED as opposed to what I WANT.

The old Pajero is dead, Lancruiser 200 or not?
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2010-02-27 13:51Oh well the fishing bucket has died. Time to change!
Looking at a Bnew Prado, or a late 2008 Landie 200S with only 18000 on the odo.
Anybody in the know help with choice. I am leaning towards the landie but have heard that the 200S early models have had some trouble.
Help please.

Towable boat cover advise please
Submitted by Anytime Brad on Thu, 2010-02-25 13:22Have been doing the rounds of the trim shops looking at a towable boat cover for my ali trailcraft runabout and now have to make a decision on what type to get. I need to make a decision real soon so as to be able to have it ready for Easter. I have been quoted on two different types, a full cover that goes right over the bow and along under the chimes to the back of the boat using draw strings under the boat and maybe a strap or two under the boat. The other is what some places call a tow cover which just goes from the windscreen (clips on) down to the stern. This involves clipping it under the gunnels with clips that are attached to the boat. Some of the guys at the trim shops have said that the all over covers don’t tow well as the wind pushes into the front of them and that they flap around. I am not a fan of drilling into the boat to put clips on but if this is the best way then so be it.Any advice from anyone who has seen/have these types of covers would be appreciated. Thanks Brad
thought I would post up some pics of the outcome of my search for a towable cover. I am very happy with it, towed the boat to walpole and back for easter without dramas. Next trip to exmouth in august. I will post a couple more photos soon as the system wont allow me to upload any more at the moment

The Dinghy is up and Running
Submitted by milsey on Mon, 2010-02-22 14:57I thought it was time to finally put up the additions my bother (Ollie) and I made to the old dinghy we bought mid last year. The hull is a 12ft Clark cutter, structurally it was sound with no leaks and it felt much more sturdy than most modern tinnies however cosmetically it wasn’t in the best shape. We basically bought it for our trip to exmouth last year, we used the engine off our tender which while it was only a 5hp it was still fast enough to troll. The boat lasted the trip and we decided to keep it, however not in its current state. Before Exmouth we added all the fishing accessories including rod holders ect.it was then when we arrived home the major work began, we started stripping the paint, which proved to be the hardest and most time consuming part of the addition. Here are a few before pics.
We used paint stripper as well as a high pressure hose, however this still left behind crappy old paint, it then took me two days straight to sand back the paint and to reveal the original aluminum.
We then decided on a painting method and decided to uses a two pack two part polyurethane gloss finish which was by no means the cheapest or the easiest but it came out with great results and It just makes the effort that much more rewarding. To make the floors we decided to use 10mm thick outdoor ply and use ribs for support and then coat in glass, we thought doing this would be the lightest and the most cost effective method. We then wrapped the boards with carpet.
Once the paint and floorboards were complete we proceded to fit all electronics and extras. We then decided to fork out and buy a new engine and after ringing around bought a new 15hp mariner which has been great since we bought it. Here are a few pics once it was finished
And finally a few pics of the fish we have caught so far in the last few weeks
so hopfully we have given any of you who are looking at or in the process of pimping out a dinghy a little insight into the effort and the reward at the end.
Miles and ollie

Advice on battery ventilation
Submitted by Muppet on Sun, 2010-02-21 00:26Guys, looking at hooking up a third battery in the boat for running a fridge etc.
The question is - do sealed lead acid batteries still need ventilation ?
I am looking at putting the 3rd battery in the cabin, under the floor below the helm in a space about 500mm sq.
Dont really want to put a third battery down the stern, could do with some extra weight up front anyhoo.
The length of wire from battery to VSR controller is about 4 meters, am i asking too much of it or should it be O.K. ?
Cheers

Anywhere NOR would be good! Spose most boat yards would put you onto the right people?

Anchor winch Key
Submitted by Rick on Mon, 2010-02-15 18:21Just wondered if anybody has a Maxwell freedom 500 anchor winch ?
Have to replace the little plastic pressure arm but need the key to undo top of the winch. It is an 8 pointed allen key type setup that is around 21mm from point to point.
Just wondered if anybody has one they are willing to loan or hire out before I go and buy one
Happy to drive to pick up and drop back with a beer or 2
Cheers

HID boat spotlights???
Submitted by mako magic on Sun, 2010-02-14 20:45Well i am changing the spotlights for the fishing area on the boat to LED's and am now thinking of changing the front facing spotlights on the hardtop, currently i have 2 marine spotties but they chew thru the power, while searching around i noticed on ebay some 55wt HID lights that would mount right in, they have internal ballast so easy to fit and clean and neat.
Has anyone else used something like this or can recommend against? i know they will cop a bit of a ponding, but no different to being on a 4X4.
just thought the HID's will give me more light over a conventional search type marine spotty??

Centrecab......whaddya reckon?
Submitted by seaman on Tue, 2010-02-09 19:16Down at Wakemaker Marine today.....looking at getting a boat built, very similar to the centrecab they're building ATM. I really like the transom layout, full frames, deep vee and there's just so much room inside and out for a 2.5m beam C/cab!

small dinghy
Submitted by wide open on Tue, 2010-02-09 17:53hi everyone i have found a small 8-9 foot dinghy fiberglass dinghy which me and my brother are ver eager to buy it.
its looks srtong and all and is new for a okay price
but my question is the motor
the guy says it can handle a 6hp max so i will probably go for a 4 or 5 hp engine-it will be a 2stroke
heres the prob, motors in this range have internal fuel tanks and i want to do trips of a couple kms up dams and lakes and beaches, and dont know how long a 2.5-3 liter tank will last
