Western Australian Boat Launching Sites - Information
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sat, 2008-02-02 06:55Hi Folks,
I've been mulling over this idea recently. I've often been asked for info on launching at Emu Point - Oyster Harbour down in Albany and thought it might be a good (or cr*p) idea to collate info on boat launching at various locations.
This doesn't have to just be about hard stand boat ramps, it can include beach launch locations as well. In fact, in regards to the latter, often it is more important as there's usually no man-made channel and therefore natural underwater obstacles/reefs/bombies to consider, and then there is also weather/swell considerations due to diminished shelter. Other considerations with a beach launch could include how hard/soft the sand is (type pressure requirements), condition of access track etc.
Each post on a location/facility could look something like this: (although open to suggestions/improvements if there is interest, willingness to commit etc).
These can be periodically updated when people use these facilities/visit locations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOCATION/Sub Location/Facility - ALBANY/Emu Point Boat Ramp
LAUNCH TYPE/Facilities - PUBLIC RAMP/2 Concrete Ramps with central slim finger.
INSIGHTS:
- Gets very busy Christmas/School Holidays so best to get down before 07:00 am.
- Tendency for non trailored cars to park in boat bays - no bosun or other control.
- Good ramps with shallow decline.
- A long bending, often narrow channel leads out to King George Sound. The channel is well marked, but care must be taken not to run aground.
- Care must be taken when launching/retreiving due to the number of pedestrians and cyclists - especially during the busy season.
EMERGENCY COVERAGE - Albany Sea Rescue (VMR610) base station is located here and therefore provides 24 x 7 coverage.
You get the idea. :)
Thoughts folks?
OH! One more thing. We could include at least one pic in each post - you could even mark it showing best route in/out - identify obstacles - any pointers on the pic that would be of assistance.
CAR PARK SHOT ON BOXING DAY - will get better pic next time I'm down:
Regards
Colin

Temp gauges on Honda.
Submitted by Roughas on Sun, 2024-11-24 08:00G'day all. Recently, we put a second hand 225 Honda on our boat. (Cannot believe how quiet it is after the Optimax!!) We don''t have temperature gauges on the Honda, just the warning buzzer. I like to see what's actually happening temperature wise so was wondering if anyone had taken the lead for a gauge off the sender unit. I'd like to still have the warning bizzer in place. Comments or thoughts appreciated. Thanks, John.

Lithium battery info from Club Marine
Submitted by Rob H on Fri, 2024-11-15 18:06Interesting article from Club Marine on lithium batteries in boats.
They take a surprisingly pragmatic view especially and mainly with lifepo4 chemistry.
“ The latter, also known as LiFePO4, is the go-to for marine house battery installations. They suit deep-cycle usage but, more importantly, studies have shown that the chemical composition is less prone to overheating and won’t self-ignite or self-combust if there’s a failure”

New (for me) Boat ID
Submitted by Deano.9 on Sat, 2024-09-28 07:52Hi all,
I bought this boat about 6 months ago, long story short I got it for a good price but needed a lot of work to bring it back up to scratch.
im hoping someone on here may recognise it & have some/any information on it?
From my research I am fairly confident the bottom hull is the same as a Savage Streaker 585, looks to have previously had a pod of some description on it before having a wakemaker pod fitted roughly 5 years ago. Motor is a Johnson (Suzuki) 140hp 4 stroke & sitting on a trailit 2020 trailer.
Upon purchasing the setup, it was registered as a "Crest craft" to which google returns no luck & the engine was also registered as an older Johnson 115hp 2 stroke.
I rang Streaker marine (previously family run business building the boats) & they reckon they never built a centre console version of the 585. The transom on their boats also have an angle outer edge which is different to mine which has a flat transom.
there are a few unknowns, either its had extensive modifications to convert to a centre console which what looks like a complete new top side & the transom has been completely changed from the 585 original design. Or possibly the moulds were shared early on & this is the product some someone's handy & hard work...
the ridge in the side of the hull along with the 3 lifting strakes are all indicative of a streaker 585, which is why I'm leaning toward this being the original design & where it's come from; however if anyone has info on it or knows of previous owners, I would love to get in touch.
let me know what you think

200 merc plug fouling
Submitted by rob90 on Fri, 2024-09-27 10:21G'day brains trust, I have a 2005 200 saltwater merc 2 stroke. 270hrs ive done 100hrs drama free over the last few years. I've recently inherited a drama where it is fouling one plug. I've swapped coils problem didn't move I've just got injectors serviced. No smoking gun in the report. All holes have exact even compression of 87psi. Rest of the plugs look like a well running 2stroke, little oily but clean. The motor runs fine, but the last time it's fouled it was after a run of 15mile at 3800 didn't miss a beat. Got to hillarys dropped down to 5knts and it was fine till we got to the ramp where it noticeably fouled the plug just before the ramp. New fuel filters and new set of plugs. Main question is has anyone had this issue what was the fix? It's fouled the one plug twice in the last 3 trips. Strangely enough I ran a tank of 95 and some fuel stabiliser/cleaner in the second run with brand new plugs and when I pulled them all plugs were mint motor was a tad smokier than usual and thirstier tho. Motor starts and idles mint, nothing suggests an issue other than one plug fouling. Top port side.

Wire size
Submitted by GotOurFish on Sat, 2024-09-07 13:16Hi everyone, I have mounted the battery in the front of our boat (429 stacer) but I'm having trouble determining the wire size I need to run to the motor. I have looked at the wire charts but I can't determine the wire size I need as for the life of me I can't find how many AMPS the starter draws. Motor model is 1030A11FL and wire run is 6m one way, any advice is much appreciated.

Tilt Tube Cleaning - Steering Maintenance
Submitted by Ush on Thu, 2024-09-05 13:46Gday all,
Looking to clean out and regrease the tilt tube for the steering cable etc. What is the best tool to be able to get into the tube?.
Wire tube brushes that are available aren't as long that would allow a thorough cleaning..
Any other ideas? or know where I can source a brush with a longer drill attachment?

40hp tiller 4stroke upgrade
Submitted by GotOurFish on Tue, 2024-08-27 19:04Hi everyone,
We have a 2012 stacer rampage 429 with a 2012 30hp 2stroke mercury with electric start.
We are going to re power with a 40hp (Max hp) 4stroke, currently not sure what brand yet. Will be opting for power trim tilt & electric start, up until now I hadn't noticed that the tiller handle is now more centralised to the outboard rather than being on the left hand side.
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the newer tiller outboards in regards to ergonomics. Or if you can get the tiller on the left side of the outboard?
Also if you have any recommendations in regards to brands in the 40hp range, good bad and ugly.
Cheers in advance

Flares and Lifejackets what is required
Submitted by Mickb on Sun, 2024-04-28 13:08Hi not sure if I have posted on Fishwrecked before as I lived in WA about 12 years ago for 5 years. I have again moved back from not so sunny Queensland and I am looking at putting my boat in the water soon. Long story short I went to a well know fishing store(starting with B and ending in F) to buy some new flares. I went to the counter and asked for flares and the young lady went to the cupboard and presented me with a set of inshore flares(2 orange flares and 2 red handheld flares) I said sorry I was after a set of offshore flares. She then told me they are only selling the inshore ones now as the offshore ones are not required anymore. Anyway I must have looked confused(not unusual for me as I am always confused) she then printed something off and gave it to me to read, which did indeed say that you only need the inshore kit now, so I purchased these yesterday. After just looking on the DOT site I am still a little confused as to what is required. Can some of the locals and more knowledgeable folk clear the is up for me, please keep it simple as I am from Queensland.
Next problem is lifejackets. DOT site states”When operating beyond 400 meters from shore in unprotected waters, everyone must wear a lifejacket (level 100 or higher)", this is for registrable vessels under 4.8 meters. My dilemma is that the boat I have is a small Cruise craft model called the Lure, Cruise Craft state the length as being 4.7 meters which is the approx waterline length however the overall length is closer to 4.87 meters, I haven’t as yet transferred the registration to WA as I only just got the boat here last week. So when I do register it do I put down the length stated by Cruise Craft or do I put down the actual overall length? Thereby getting around the problem of having to wear a lifejacket all the time offshore, I know some of you are going to say I should do this and generally I would but sometimes it is hot and I would like to take it off. Again please keep it simple.
Cheers for the help
Michael

Dropped siphon hose into fuel tank
Submitted by Percula on Mon, 2024-04-15 19:30Hi Team
So stuffed up today. Trying to siphon hose out of fuel tank, and the end of the jiggle hose came off. :(
Assume its best to get it out of there. Ally tank, so dissimilar metals etc etc
Hoping someone has a magical way, apart from pulling up floor, taking off sender and fishing it out somehow. Going to have to empty it out a bit as well.
Also, any recommendations on who could do this for me, cos I cant be bothered!
Thanks

fuel filter.
Submitted by Sea goat on Wed, 2024-03-13 08:48Hi guys.
new boat came with standard quicksilver fule filters. i havent had a chance to install one of the glass filters with the taps on the bottom.
since getting the boat about 2-3 weeks ago, the tank has been about 1/2 full (420l tank), i didnt want to fill it, as wanted to keep it low for the tow up north.
Just wondering how quickly water can accumilate. given the filters are new and only had for about 3 weeks, is water/condensation likley to be an issue by now? I have been using the boat fairly regulalry, and added new fuel (premium) on 2 occasions. im not sure i will be able to get a glass bowl filter installed before leaving on saturday....
im used to storing the tanks full, so havent really worried about this too much previously, but its kinda in my mind now as could wreck a trip pretty easily!
cheers
for any advice!

Hull Cleaning & Antifoul - Mandurah
Submitted by devhay on Tue, 2024-01-30 11:10G'day all,
Can anyone reccomend a quality company for underwater hull cleaning and/or acid wash & antifoul works?
Have a brand new 25ft fibreglass centre console that has been sitting in the Port Bouvard canals since late December and its looking like a jungle under the hull already.
Open to any suggestions or advice on cleaning and maintaining it while we're dealing with all the red tape of getting a new jetty/dry dock/sea keeper organised.

Fuel containers for extended trips
Submitted by ChopChop on Thu, 2024-01-11 15:30What are people's experiences and preferences with carting ~300-400l of fuel for extended trips?
Interested to hear pros and cons of: lots of plastic Jerry cans, steel 44 or plastic 44. Might be a 1 off and no under floor storage so a bladder isn't really an option.

Minn kota mount to glass boat
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sat, 2023-10-14 08:17After speaking to the local fibreglass team, said I'd be crazy to sell the haines, so going to spend the money doing her up. Has anyone installed / found a mounting bracket to install minn kota onto an glass surface on the bow with bow rail? I've done some googling and seen the below which looks ok, but chasing any other ideas / suggestions of off the shelf mounts vs fabricating up or ?
On secondary, also considering getting the new soft decking / u deck / deck armour. Anyone know if it would stand up to the dog claws / paws as she comes with for the 7 months of the year before its too hot. Whilst I expect to treat it mean fishing wise, not sure if its tough enough to handle the dog / anyone else take the furry friend with and know if it stands up before spending good money to try make it a bit more comfy for the missus.
Cheers
Adam
