Submitted by Piggy on Wed, 2021-09-08 10:32Hey Fishos
Looking at getting a bit of work done on my boat. Want to get more rod holders and stubby holders welded into the gunnels, rod holders welded onto my hard top, cannopy modified basically a bit of ally work done. Then want to get all the gunnels etc repainted once all that is done, then want to get deck armour fitted on the flooring.
Can anyone recommed anywhere to get the work done?
Appreciate the feedback

Murchison Siltation
Submitted by Dhu_west on Wed, 2021-08-11 20:38On the DOT website there is a notice saying the Murchison channel is silted up and is un-navigable. Is there anybody that is in Kalbarri now or has been recently that would be able to provide an insight in to the conditions up there, is it the river or the mouth?
cheers

GMD 7.5m build
Submitted by Bryce Day on Thu, 2021-07-29 22:19Start of the 7.5m Global Marine air rider build. Complete video in YouTube as build progresses. Not building them for a living so it is not a buisness f*%$ that just a personal build over the next 3 months. Will cover everything from trailer/boat build to complete fit out. Will do most of it myself with help from time to time. Should be working on it most days. Couple delays atm... waiting on Fronius to arrive and some 100x100x6 shs oh also axles from the East coast... should be in Perth tomorrow hopefully. I plan to have all the frames on the jig tomorrow and the catch tank drain lines run with a few stringers in along with the cable duct then a big shed clean.

How to remove hydraulic steering mount question?
Submitted by Kelvinjr12 on Mon, 2021-06-28 12:19Hi guys
I am having issues with water ingressing into the pod which my Honda 135 is attached to, there is a hatch on top of the pod which a marine company re siliconed however there is still water getting in weighing down the back of the boat. QUESTION? without having to lift the motor off I thought of taking off the hydraulic steering arm (see photos) there is a nut on either side of the arm however it appears when I turn the nut the other side turns I suppose I will need to get a mate to hold the other side with a wrench? has anyone ever removed one of these? & lastly if I remove the hatch & clean off the old silicone what is the best method to seal the hatch , any comments or advice appreciated . Suzuki DF140 Repairs Mobile SOR
Submitted by Browndog on Thu, 2021-06-17 21:01Hi guys, got a fuel issue on one of my 2006 Zuke 140's, runs fine at WOT for a while and eventually drops RPM / surges. Turn it off for 5 seconds then restart and it runs fine. Have swapped fuel lines/tanks/fuel filters etc, problem stays with the port side engine, so pretty sure it's high pressure pump or crap stuck in the VST.
Can anyone suggest a good mobile guy to do repairs? Boat is currently in Fremantle area and will be going back to Woodman Point soon. Appreciate any suggestions, cheers.

Electric motors with spot lock
Submitted by Willlo on Sat, 2021-06-12 21:30Hi guys ,
Ive been looking at the Lowrance ulterra leccy motor set ups. In particular one suitable for a 20 ft fibreglass boat.I think best suited would be 36vlt 80 or 110 lb thrust with the 72inch shaft . Also have any of you fellas hooked them up to your GPS ? So you can set it from your console or via remote.Looks like its going to be exxxy so wouldnt mind a bit of feedback before pulling the trigga.
P.S or are there a better brand of electric available that anyone has used ?
Cheers

Verado lower spark plug access
Submitted by Jim on Sun, 2021-06-06 13:46Gday,
I dont have the service manual available and cant find anything online about the 4 cylinder 2008 150hp verados.
Trying to fumble my way thru changing the plugs, top 3 plugs easy as. The bottom one looks like you need to remove other crap to get to it. The Cowl latch latch is off and I cant get the 'rear cover' thing off that blocks access.
Any gurus know what im talking about? if the pick works, the bloke here skipped this removal for some reason.
cheers

Moving from Twins to a Single
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2021-05-20 20:13Am chasing any advice or anyone that may be experienced in changing a boat from twin outabords over to a single?
I own a 26ft Fury Centre console and starting to think about repowering. Currently have twin 140hp 4stks and weighing up the options below
Twin 150hp (likely Yamaha as they support electric throttle and power steering)
Twin 200hp 4 cyl Yamaha
Twin 200hp 6 cyl Merc
or
Single 300 v8 Merc
The most obvious question is "Have i contacted the manufacturer" Yep I've spoken to Scott many times, and his opinion is both twins and a single will work well.
My problem is, im a creature of habit and i will go back to things that im used to. ie; if i eat a nice meal at a restaraunt, next time i go back to that restaraunt i will likely eat the same meal.
I know the Fury with Twins, i know how it runs, how it balances and how it turns. With a Single 300, i simply do not know what this will be like.
There is another obviuos factor, there is a significant purchase price difference between the Single 300 and any combination of twins, in the vacinity of $10-$15k so that is also weighing in on the decision.
Curious to know if anyone has made the transition on the same boat? and what the expectation compared to actual was like?
The last alternative is putting the Fury up for sale and buying something else....that idea I've been playing with for the last 2 years!
Any info on anyones experience would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Bodie

minor repairs
Submitted by Sea goat on Thu, 2021-05-13 13:17Hey guys. after, coming home fomr a run out deep i noticed my transducer bracket had come loose. it looks like the scres have pulle dout a bit. unsure if maybe i hit something while under way. was thinking of fixing it muyself as quite a long way to get it booked in anywhere.
I was thinkng my options are either;
screw in tight, and apply sikaflex aorund the screwheads to help seal. only concern is given they are self tapping screws that the thread hold may have bene effected?
2: pull screws out completely, aplly araldite to screws, then screw back in with sikaflex aorund the screw heads.
any suggestionos as to preffered methods, or other options? other materials to use?
cheers!

Fixing Leaking Deck Cover
Submitted by Ikan on Sun, 2021-05-09 11:32Hi All, long time lurker, first time poster, but i would really appreciate the input from the experienced crew on here.
I have a 5.5m plate ali with a sealed deck, the sealed deck is leaking via deck cover over the fuel tank. My plan is to drill out the rivets, clean it up and and re seal it with Sikaflex. I have 3 questions for you guys:
1. When i replace the cover, should i use aluminium rivets or stainless steel screws (with duralac)
2. What is the best way to remove the old sikaflex
3. Any other tips or tricks
Thanks

New surtees and Dunbier trailer
Submitted by ctan1968 on Tue, 2021-03-23 07:33Hello all,
Has anyone got a relatively new surtees which sits on the new model Dunbier trailer (the trailer with black keel rollers and 2 black skids)?
I have the same trailer and I am interested to see how the launch/retrieve mechanism works and how it fits on.
If you are north of river, can I please come over to have a quick look?
I am in Stirling.
Cheers in advance.

Ali Hard top
Submitted by Bradmac73 on Mon, 2021-03-15 14:45
Hi all,
I've recently purchased a 5.5 plate ali (2.2 beam) and am considering adding a hard top to replace the bimini which is currently attached to the ali launcher. After opinions from anyone who has done this or considered as to what difference it makes to stability and handling given the difference it would create in the centre of gravity of the boat. Is this a significant issue?
cheers

boat starting batteries suggestions
Submitted by chevaps on Sun, 2021-03-14 23:29Hi all.
Looking for some suggestions on replacement 12V starter batteries for a 250 Suzuki that will last longer than 2 years.
My latest pair, a couple of Delkors, appear to be giving up the ghost after 2.5 years. One is showing full green on the SOC indicator, but drops to 10.7V even after a decent charge and recondition - shorted cell i guess. The other is showing mostly black with the the tiniest hint of green on the SOC indicator, but still measures 12.6V a few days after a charge and recondition. Lucky i check these things regularly because i run my batteries in parallel pretty much all the time, so could have ended up with 2 dead batteries on the water. My mates continuously give me shit about it, but it's in my blood and pretty much my bread and butter.
I went Delkor once my Yuasas failed after less than 2 years in service, and had Centurys prior to that which didn't last much longer. Delkors are supposedly better, and this view is definitely reflected in their price, and was really hoping to get more out of them. The batteries are cared for and receive top ups from a CTEK every few months and and get a recondition annually. Givem the batteries pretty much always in parallel, they see the same load cycles and charging cycles, so i am puzzled why one battery in this instance failed as it did.
Look forward to hearing about some battery success stories based on actual experience.
Cheers.
Tom.

Old Guardian Dilemma ??
Submitted by Proby68 on Sat, 2021-02-27 19:33I have a mid 70s 20 foot Guardian half cabin that has got to the stage where I need to spend alot of money on it or I move on to the next boat. It was my Dads and he purchased it in 1981 and we have done alot of fishing out of it. Its a great fishing boat ,plenty of deck space and freeboard. Rides well but can be a bit wet when its sloppy coming home. It spends most of its life in a shed at a small coastal central west town, only gets used when I get over there, wouldnt do 30 hours a year. 18 months ago it didnt pass a condition report due to some issues with the deck that the old man had a bloke do a repair on, the transom was also a concern where the bolts go through to hold the motor. Not critical he said but will need to be sorted. After 4 or 5 hours fishing when I undo the bottom plug about a litre of light brown water will come out, looks like weak tea. Stringers are stuffed ??. The boat is showing the usual signs of age , faded colour and a few dings from craypots etc. The deck is not spongy as far as I can tell.
The engine is a 2001 Johnson 115 HP 2 Stroke which is in very good condition , I doubt if it has done 600 hours. Trailer is a 2005 Roadmaster tandem axle that has had new gal springs put on 2 years ago and is washed every time I use it and is in VGC. The boat has Hydrive hydraulic steering , pot winch & a shit homemade tipper. Navman sounder and Raymarine plotter & VHF radio.
Given the amount of time I spend in it I am having trouble justifying buying something else that I dont know much about . I dont have the time or knowledge to give it a birthday, GT Fibreglass seems to get high praises on this sight.
2 Questions, is it worth spending money on a boat this old and how much coin would I pour into it ?
At the moment the boat doesnt have a canopy ,just a windscreen that is right on my Eyeline, the boss who is my decky is demanding some shade when we are out.
Sorry for the essay , but would appreciate opinions of others who have been down this path.
Also I want to stay with fibreglass Im 53 and ali boats hurt me.

Re-Powering old Boat
Submitted by Brock O on Wed, 2021-02-24 08:00Current have an old 79 Guardian, licensed at 5.7 meters running a 1995 115HP Johnson 2 stroke - 136kgs.
Transom is still solid, no flex at all, ass end has some small gel coat cracking as expected for a boat that age. Pass Inspection late last year.
Ive Just bought...Pick up today a second hand 2005 135HP Merc Optimax - 205kgs so a jump of 70kgs. Found the below calculation on line
Australian Standards Calculation AS1799
Length of boat X waterline Beam width at transom x 16 less 67 then x 1.34 = HP rating.
so I'm getting 5.7 x 1.85 = 168.72 less 67 = 101 x 1.34 = 136HP so basically its on it limit but not massive over kill.
Anyone with shipwright / boat building experience as such on a change out like this on the older boats ?
Yes, inspection and insurance will need updating.

Servicing costs?

Continuation of parts manufacture ?( have read on the internet that manufacture of certain Volvo marine engines will stop)
Have spoken to several service people who say no problems, but are they bias? Who knows.
