Minn kota mount to glass boat
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sat, 2023-10-14 08:17After speaking to the local fibreglass team, said I'd be crazy to sell the haines, so going to spend the money doing her up. Has anyone installed / found a mounting bracket to install minn kota onto an glass surface on the bow with bow rail? I've done some googling and seen the below which looks ok, but chasing any other ideas / suggestions of off the shelf mounts vs fabricating up or ?
On secondary, also considering getting the new soft decking / u deck / deck armour. Anyone know if it would stand up to the dog claws / paws as she comes with for the 7 months of the year before its too hot. Whilst I expect to treat it mean fishing wise, not sure if its tough enough to handle the dog / anyone else take the furry friend with and know if it stands up before spending good money to try make it a bit more comfy for the missus.
Cheers

Boat purchase inspection
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2023-10-04 21:59Am seriously contemplating selling my haines 565f and upgrading to a whaler cc currently at Challenge Marine and flying down from karratha next weekend for a look before driving down at the end of the month. Wondering if you guys could recommend a professional for a hull and outboard inspection that is reasonably priced that goes to where the vessel is located?
Cheers

Honda 50 4st - been sat for year wont start - mechanic recommendations?
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Mon, 2023-10-02 08:53hi all
i picked up a 2007 honda 4st recently which has been sat for about a year - wont start on fresh fuel - fuel is coming out of the fuel pump but i dont think it is getting to the carbs (when i took out the drain screws on the bowls only a dribble of fuel came out)
The motor turns over and starts up straight away if i spray aerostart into the intake (but wont run on after i stop spraying) - have sprayed carbies with carby clean but to no avail - only thing i have not tried is carb clean down the fuel inlet pipe into carbs -
thinking it may be better to get a mechanic to clean/rebuild carbs - any recommendations?
cheers

Submitted by ZAPPA TOMCAT on Mon, 2023-08-07 07:25Hey all,
Have recently bought a Leeder Tomcat with a 5.0 Mpi and Alpha gen 2 leg.

The boat is always well washed down with salty Captains products and the engine flushed with there flush.
Any tips/advice would be great
Love the boat, very roomy, stable and easy to fish from

Rottnest New Years Eve
Submitted by Rob H on Sat, 2023-08-05 10:47Planning on Rotto this year for NYE and onwards after having missed a few years.
The website is a shitshow, last time I did this I booked a pen for that night then the beach moorings for the rest of the time.
Looking at the website, there is no moorings, pens, anything for the entire january.
The boating guide doesnt say anything I can see about where you can and cant anchor other than fairways so I'm assuming can anchor either south Thomson or North Thomson if nothing available?

Weird VHF radio problem
Submitted by wrasse magnet on Mon, 2023-05-29 11:44G'Day everyone,
I've got a very weird intermittent problem with my VHF radio in my boat that I need to sort out. Tried logging on early yesterday morning with VMR Whitfords but my message to them was so faint they could hardly hear me, in the meantime I could hear them and other boats around me loud and clear 5/5. Ended up logging on with my phone and mid-afternoon did a radio check at which time sea rescue could now hear me loud and clear 5/5. A week ago no problems logging on or off.
It's a GME VHF radio, whip and base.
This has been going on for a little while, I thought it might be the coaxial cable between the base and the radio so changed out the base. No problems last weekend so thought I had it fixed but now the problem has returned so I don't know what step to take next, change out the whip or change out the radio, whicp obviously cheaper but I'll just be wasting my money if it's the radio.
If anyone has experienced this sort of thing before or has any ideas I would very much appreciate any advice and ideas.
Cheers

New trailer - questionable galvanised finish
Submitted by tjayliffe on Tue, 2023-04-11 11:11Morning all,
Last week I picked up a new boat + trailer which we'd been waiting on for close to a year. We paid very good money for the trailer and boat from a very well known Australian brand.
When I got it home for a decent look, I noticed the finish on the galvanising looks pretty sub-par with areas already flaking off and spot rust starting in sections already.
It also appears as though the trailer wasn't cleaned properly prior to galvanising, given areas of very rough surface finish. I assume the proud points will wear faster resulting in accelerated risk in rust.
My questions to those that know anything about galvanising and current industry standards -
- Is the finish below what would be considered a tradesman / industry standard for marine galvanising
- Will the finish impact the longevity of the trailer
- What can be done to fixing the issue i.e. sandblast re-galvenise etc
- Anyone else had any issues like this recently? If so, what happended when it was flagged with the supplier
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Tim

Rebuilding Electric over hydraulic brake calipers - trigg A200
Submitted by scuttlebutt on Fri, 2023-02-17 17:04
Hey folks, just thought I'd make a video about reconditioning brakes on an electric over hydraulic trailer. The calipers I have are Trigg A200. I decided to learn how to do it myself after going to a brake shop once and they just threw out my old calipers and replaced them. After receiving that bill I vowed to do it myself.... The calipers I have now are 10 years old. They'll last forever if you just give them a rebuild every 12 months or so.
Anyway, video below. No ads, no sponsorship, happy to hear any feedback.
cheers,
Steve

Tohatsu electrical issue
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Mon, 2023-01-09 15:44wouldnt be boating if things didnt mess up at xmas
was over a rotto for 2 weeks, day 3 my rib motor which has previously run flawlessly - spluttered and stopped, luckily inshore!
On diagnosis, no spark all three plugs (Tohatsu 50hp 2 stroke), after googling possible fixes, i tried bypassing kill switch, checked fuses, checked for cracked wires - but still no spark on all three plugs -
seems it can only be the CDI unit (ECUish type black box) or the coil exciters under flywheel
anyone had similar experience? - my biggest concern is how it just stopped without warning of any prior symtons - i rang to get a price on a new 4stroke today 11.5k and April...... i miss pre-covid negotiating!
cheers

Floodable kill tank
Submitted by rob90 on Sat, 2022-12-17 07:32So I have pulled the floor up on my leeder and I've noticed there is plenty of space to make use of. I'll make a hatch up front but I am thinking of adding a self flooding/draining kill tank. Got plenty of room for a decent size one. Questions are, is it useful or would I be better off building un under floor esky out of appropriate materials, if I do run a tank do I just need to run a a single fill/drain line from the transom to tank with a screw in bung on the inside of the tank or do I need to run a top and bottom line. Also is there any small fabricators with some spare time to whip one up for me? I've splurged and bought all the composite board as well as some two part expansion foam so I've got some sticky itchy work ahead over the break.

Bearing buddies
Submitted by Sea goat on Sat, 2022-12-10 10:03Hey guys, wondering if I could get some advice.
had all my bearings redone/ replaced at last service approx 7 months ago.
have got bearing buddies, so every couple of weeks I usually have a look, and if there is no movement of the plate I will put 1-2 pumps of grease through the grease gun.
went to do that today and noted the following.
one of the caps full of grease, once cleaned noted the grease nipple has come off, floating in all the grease, can't reattach, looks like thread may have busted.
wondering if any way to fix, or if needs full replacement?
any suggestions as whether would be ok to drive to the workshop? Or best to keep immobile?
any advice greatly appreciated!!!

Minn Kota / leccy motor
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2022-11-28 20:00Hi All,
Bought the lil 4.5m tinny that Johnny looked at the other day. Turns out the watersnake goes forward n reverse n not sideways. So going to upgrade to an i-pilot, can anyone recommend a good one, where to get at a decent price etc? Definitely want spot lock etc. I've been told definitely to stay away from auto deploy models as the motor often cooks / seals perish etc and a bitch to get fixed.
Cheers,

engine reccomendations?
Submitted by Sea goat on Thu, 2022-10-06 13:26hey guys.
despite the incoming ban, i am looking at potntially upgrading the boat to a carribean 2300, and will be wanting dual engines as spending more and more time remote and a long way off shore.
its been a while since i have been looking at engines and unfortunately missed the boat show as came down with the rona :/
was wondering what peoples current opinions are on best options/
my current rig has the 200hp merc and have been pretty happy, but if looking at the upgraded 350hp hull, then merc dont do a counter rotating so would end up heaps more expensive.
yamaha
look good, but havent had them before. this helm master thing looks interesting.
just wondering if anyone has any opnions, good or bad, or any other suggestions/ cost isnt too much of a factor as as far as im concerned the negnes need to be reliable or its just not fun any more, esp as the kids will be coming out more now.
anyway, thanks heaps for any advice!

Tilt tube cleaner
Submitted by Anytime Brad on Thu, 2022-09-29 15:44Hi all just servicing the boat and find the steering cable sized in the tilt tube. Got it out and now need to clean the tube out and don’t have a reaming tool. Made a flexible reamer a few years ago but since moving house seems to have gone missing. Don’t have any flexible cable to make another one quickly so though I’d ask if anyone had one I could grab for an hour.
Cheers Brad
