Boat Launching Checklist
Submitted by Magic on Mon, 2010-10-04 13:25I was watching a boating show over the weekend and during one of the segments a bloke was down at a ramp running through a list of things everyone should check before launching their boat.
Aside from all the usual items eg check bung is screwed in, he suggested that the trailer light socket should be disconnected from the vehicle before submersing the lights. Being relatively new to boating, it’s not something I’ve done and can’t really say it’s something I’ve noticed others at the ramp doing.
Would be interested to hear who does it and why.

Rubber backed carpet mats
Submitted by Frank F on Sun, 2010-10-03 16:47Looking for some info on the mats that the restaurants use in the kitchen. Does anyone know where to buy them from in a size of around 2.4x 2.2 or is there a place that can make them to any size. Clark rubber sells them but only in a small size.

in addition to the name they removed all the old 80s style gold pinstriping and replaced it with a solid black.
I'm really happy with the way it all turned out.
shouldnt be hard to see me coming now :-)

Plastic under floor fuel tanks
Submitted by Reefmonkey on Fri, 2010-10-01 20:36Hi all just wondering if anybody has experience with plastic underfloor fuel tanks good and bad?
Currently going through the very slow going process of replacing the guts of my 17ft glass half cabin. Having just finished putting in the forward stringer and ribs under the cabin now looking to measure up the rest of the flooring under the main deck. Anyway I'm looking to install a fuel tank under the deck. I've been looking at the SS cruise tanks from BIAS boating but now i've been hearing bad things about stainless tanks cracking and hearing good things about plastic. The main reason I would go away from stainless is extra weight and if they are likely to crack in a few years of use,and well i was going to fully seal the deck up over the tank and would be another big job to get back to pull it out. To combat this tho i could always make it into a fully sealed well for the tank to sit in with a removable panel/lid flush with the floor.
Does anybody have experience with plastic tanks from the sizes 60-100liters? found plenty of US sites and one shop over east that sell em but postage would be horrendous! Does anybody know of a WA supplier of plastic tanks? have found a few moeller (68 & 98lt) low profile tanks that stand 200mm tall, I'll be raising the floor 40mm higher than before so for a flat bottomed tank i will have a clearance of 300mm at the base of the two stringers, elevated above the keel. That brings me to next question... will 100mm be enough for filler hoses and fittings? will putting too much of a bend in the filler hose(without kinking) slow the flow of fuel when filling up or cause problems?
Need to make a decision and purchase before measuring up the rest of the project for a snug fit. However dont want to outlay the money and realise it was never meant to be.
Any advice or experiences would be greatly welcome
Dave

West to East Boat Transport?
Submitted by Hayzy on Mon, 2010-09-27 11:14Hey,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good transport company to transport my boat from Perth to Sydney.
I recently found out my stay in the east was to be extended by a couple of years (for work!), so it is time to bring the boat over so I can get stuck into a few NSW fish!
Boat is a 5.1m Trailcraft on a trailer.
Any assistance would be appreciated. So far quotes have been around the $3k mark.
Thanks
Hayzy

idling boat motor while fishing... anyone??
Submitted by scottbec on Sun, 2010-09-19 07:23Hi guys,
Just wondering how many of you guys leave your boat on and in idle, or in reverse idle to go against a drift, while you are fishing??
I figure with a 60hp 4 stroke it would only use a little bit more fuel, but will also give you the piece of mind that if you have to quickly start the boat that there wont be any issues with getting going...
Anyone have any thoughts on this one? for or against.
Cheers,
Scott

Anyone else have an inflatable boat?
Submitted by tigerfish on Tue, 2010-09-14 20:37Rightly or wrongly (too late now), I've bought an inflatable boat. It is to be used as a multi-purpose fishing, snorkelling, diving, cruising vessel. I realise it has some short comings when it comes to fishing (not much interior space, fairly flat bottom, hook/tooth/gaff/spine attracting air-filled pontoons) but I am determined to work around these and make it into a usable fishing vessel
Does anyone else have an inflatable that they use for fishing? At the moment, I'm trying to find ways to set it up for fishing i.e mounting a fish finder, rod holders etc but not sure about the best way to go about this.
Would also be helpful to know the best way to launch - dolly wheels, folding trailer, carry? Things to watch out for? Ways to avoid punctures?

Respray of 100HP Yamaha 4-stroke
Submitted by Dreamcatcher on Tue, 2010-09-14 11:09I'm looking at having my 100HP Yamaha 4-stroke outboard on my RIB resprayed. The 'ol girl is in need of a facelift and TLC so a good respray and new stickers to make her look good for summer. I do not want to take the motor off the boat. Any ideas, recommendations of who can do the job for me and how much would one expect to pay for a GOOD job?
Thanks Dave

I am looking at buying a fraser 5.2 (1990) with a 100hp Yamaha 4 stoke(2008) with 50 hours on the meter.
Im trying to find out how the Fraser performs with the heavier 4 stoke motor(it weighs about 170 kgs)
Im going to use it to fish and and water- skie, Interested to find out how the boat performs when pulling a slalom skier and if it drags it ass, because of the heavier donk.
Does anybody know someone who has got a similar setup?

Recreational Skippers Ticket Recommendations
Submitted by tigerfish on Sun, 2010-09-12 20:17Hi all,
Have just bought a boat - 3.8m roll-up inflatable and 25hp Tohatsu and need to do my skippers ticket. I've had boats on and off so pretty confident with them but would like to do one of the 'guaranteed pass' type courses just to be sure.
Does anyone have any recommendations for companies or individuals that do the RST course? I'm up near Joondalup, so Hillarys or Mindarie are convenient but would go down to Swan. I'd probably want to do it using the instructors boat as it's a bit of a hassle setting up and taking down the inflatable. Ideas of prices would also be good.
Thanks in advance

cleveland hulls
Submitted by silly on Tue, 2010-09-07 19:59Have been tinkering with the idea of upgrading the tinny to something with forward controls and screen. This has basically lead to looking at runabouts in the 4.75m + range. A few brands have popped up which i have heard of but i cant find too much information about them on the net, eg Cleveland, From what i gather they are made in QLD? anyone have exerience with these hulls?

Currently have a quintrex and has been awesome but just keeping the options open.

Flushing new yammie
Submitted by rossco21 on Mon, 2010-09-06 20:41Hi guys, have had me new/second hand coast runner for a month now. Quick question, first time i went to flush it with muffs on it it would not pump water out of the tell tail hole. I then had me mate across the road bring his drum across and filled it and no dramas. When i tried it again the week after it still didnt pump out of there. Now i have a small (4mm) hole just above where the muffs go on i am thinking this is another suction hole?? In the mean time i have been screwing the hose off on the right hand side and connecting a hose fitting into it and it seems to flush the motor with water coming out of all the normal areas.
Is this ok and how the rest of the yammie four storke owners do it or am i doing something wrong. Motor is and 03 yammie four stroke 60 hp.
Any help would be appreciated guys
Cheer rossco

Intermittent tell tale
Submitted by 7739ian on Mon, 2010-09-06 08:19Went out on Geographe Bay on Saturday - motor started fine so i let it warm up then zoomed out about a kilometre and a half to find the tell tale pouring out lots of steam but no water. I let the motor cool for half an hour and fired it up - tell tale worked fine for the rest of the day. Got home and the same problem when i tried to flush it in a half 200 litre poly drum. I could feel a stream of warm air coming out of it but no water. Finally got it to pump ok by fitting ear muffs to the inlet IN the drum of water. It has never pumped through just with ear muffs hence the drum. I have searched older posts and can't decide between an air lock or buggered water pump - the water pump will see me marooned as i can't afford any pro repairs for a while. Evinrude Elan 35hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke.
Cheers, Ian

Anyone heard of a Customline Marine Ultima CC
Submitted by till on Fri, 2010-09-03 19:42Just saw one of these on the road, anyone heard of them? I saw one one the road (on a trailer!), Hellow on top, had a mariner 125 two-banger on it, center console with a fibreglass top. Looked like a fairly narrow hull, perhaps they had customised the transom a little.
Just a curiousity question ...
