New Boat
Submitted by Mark M on Sun, 2010-12-19 18:08Hi all,
Looking at buying a 7.4 mtr Barrington hardtop with 200hp Yamaha on the back just wondering if anyone has owned one or fished in one and what they are like ride wise. Will use it for fishing out off Perth and also tow up north a few times a year to get amongst a few.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

manual trim position
Submitted by dakka on Sun, 2010-12-19 10:50
howdy all
i have a 14.5 ft ally runabout with a 30hp mariner on it.my query is about what position i should have the manual trim at, i have 5 different holes to place it in, do i just have it generally in one of the holes all the time and if so which one would be best to use in general. i know weight displacement inside the boat will effect the ride, but because it is a manual trim i think it would be a pain to keep changing on the run all the time. so is there a general hole i can leave it in for most of the time. also i have a hydrofoil which i can put on as well are these a good idea to use or not.
cheers

1990 - 97 Mercs 75 to 90 HP beware of Stator malfunction
Submitted by lc-80 on Sat, 2010-12-18 09:31Gday fellow Fwreckers with these motors. Had the pleasure of being stuck out from Green Head a few weeks ago with 30 kts of nor easter a 3 metre swell, snapped off anchor and one dead 75HP Merc.
Luckily for us the Fisheries vessel Äbrohlas Piper" kindly offered us a tow back to shore. See they are around when you need them.
Would seem that the Stators fitted to these models have an issue with overheating in the windings and blowing the high charge side of the device. This results in no spark.
It would also seem that Mercury are well aware of the problem and it has been a very good earner for them and thier techs.
My post is to let those that have these timebombs on the stern of their vessels know and to check and see if yours has a red stator as these are the improved versions and if it is a black one take an extra anchor out with you.
It beggers belief that they have not been recalled these engines and I wonder how many near misses or even casualties have been caused by this problem.
The motor in question has been fastidiously looked after and is in show room condition so its not an abuse thing and certainly not an isolated case

barnacles
Submitted by kempy on Sun, 2010-12-05 08:46taking the boat down to bunbury and it is going to be in a pen for a week. last time we did this we got an awful surprize when we pulled it out. all these small barnacles were all over it. over time they have started to come off but there is quite a few still on there. the question is how do you keep them off or get them off without painting antifoul on.

Best boat ramp to use to head across to rotto
Submitted by Aaron Santos on Thu, 2010-11-18 14:34
Hi all,
Im pretty new on this forum, and actually pretty new to perth. I moved up about 5 months ago from bunbury.
Im heading across to Rottnest in a couple of weeks for an over nighter on the island, was wondering what would be the best boat ramp to use and probably the closest so its less travel across to the island. I live North of the river.
Also is it safe to leave the car over night.
Cheers all advise appreciated.

Who's running a computer program for their sounder/GPS backing up?
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Thu, 2010-11-18 09:26Hey all,
Is anyone running a program on their computer for viewing/saving waypoints, sounder shots, etc, particularly for thier Lowrance? I downloaded the free Lowrance Sonar Viewer but I think it should have been left in the '80's where it belongs.
What are you running, where did you get it from, how much $$$ and is it worth it?
Cheers

Electronic rust protection
Submitted by A-SALT-WEAPON on Mon, 2010-11-15 18:22Hi all
Im looking at putting one of those electronic rust protectors on my boat trailer.
Im wondering has anybody else done this and if so is it a good idea.
I can see a few little problems like running wiring through the trailer as there's between 4 to 8 anodes , running it from the boat battery it will draw 32mil amps so have to keep battery charged
you will have to remember to disconnect.
My trailer is showing some signs of rust and its nearly $6000 to replace new and for $160 i can try this.
IS IT A GOOD IDEA?

Power loss 75 merc
Submitted by Gibbsy on Sun, 2010-11-14 04:48Any ideas I am losing power for long periods when heading home from a day out fishing. feels to me like an air/fuel issue flat out the motor is only pulling 3100rpm which is down from around 6500rpm I am also using a huge amount of oil as it is an 05 oil injected motor have had to fill resevoir up after only 30 mile. fuel lines have all been checked for any leaks as well as obstructions to air flow fuel has been fresh both times this has happened and inbetween this happening I have done a 50 mile trip with no problems.
any ideas

Electric trailer winches
Submitted by Frank F on Wed, 2010-11-10 17:46Well I have now decided to join the Cockburn power boat club again since all the recent break ins. I do a lot of early morning and night fishing and come to the conclusion that it will be cheaper to buy a electric winch than to replace a window every few months.
I didn't renew this year because of the no drive on drive off rule that they introduced. To me it was the principle of the matter, my boat weighs 2.8 tonnes and the trailer is designed to drive on and off, which is a lot quicker than winching. They came up with a story that the ramp is getting wrecked by prop wash and that it is a safety issue as well.
So I am interested in the experience that people have had good or bad and what people recommend in the way of electric trailer winches. I have been looking at the power winch and the super winch. It all get a bit confusing because they talk about single line pull, but I have noticed that it is different to the maximum boat weight. They also talk about the incline of the ramp.
So if anyone can enlighten me on the whole winch thing it will be much appreciated.
