sounders
Submitted by roganjosh on Tue, 2011-04-05 06:23
Hi Everyone,
I have a question regarding sounders and GPS bought from overseas ( USA ebay ). The US dollar is too good not to miss out on. Does anyone know if you buy a sounder or GPS from the states if they are the same and will work down under. My guess is a sounder would work fine but with a GPS the base map would be set for the US. Also if you were to buy a Gold card from here and put into a US GPS would the Card override the preset US maps?.
Any help would be appreciated.

Kids life jackets...
Submitted by MattG on Sun, 2011-04-03 19:47I'm about to buy my girl her first life jacket.
I thought I'd canvass opinion on what people were using and their likes/dislikes.
My only prerequisite is that it has to be PFD Type 1. My girl is 11kg.
So, what do your kids wear?

bleeding dual axle trailer brakes
Submitted by grayzeee on Sun, 2011-04-03 10:51couple of questions
went and did the wheel bearings on my trailer the other day, only to find (a can of worms) the front left caliper in need of seals and some quite uneven wear on the 4 discs. the rear axle seems to have been dragging the brakes, overheating discs and pads.
removed that caliper and plugged the line.
is it just a case of bolting back on the caliper and bleeding just that one??
what can be done about the uneven brake wear???
the rigid brake lines are looking in pretty poor condition too, though it's surface rust, i'll swap them out next time for flexi ones.
just wondering, as i'm not too mechanically minded , in what order you'd bleed the 4 calipers ???
al ko brakes with hydrastar elec system if that would matter

Another "donk won't start"
Submitted by saltydog on Sat, 2011-04-02 14:52Mercury 40hp 1989 model.
Battery fully charged
New fuel bulb.
New fuel.
Bugger just won't kick over.
Plus the primer bulb didn't seem to get hard.
So the following week when I had some time, went and purchased new plugs
and put them in.
With the cowl off and priming the bulb (this time the bulb firmed up after about 10 compressions)
Had a squize at the carbs to see if the butterly's were closed, I noticed fuel basically squirting out of
what I think is the economiser jet located front of carb upper RHS corner.
After fuel had leaked out of here and into the chamber she kicked over
but died within seconds!
Tried again and same thing.
So I gather I need to put a kit through the carbs.
And what would this cost to get it done?
Anyone have any thoughts.
cheers

Whittley 1750 Clearwater
Submitted by scere_182 on Wed, 2011-03-30 13:28Gday Gday!
I'm in the market for my first boat and have my eye on the whittley 1750 of the clearwater range.
Just like to know if anyone has owned one before and could spare a few opinions on positives and negatives with them.
Or things i should look out for in general when purchasing a used boat in this size etc.
Never owned a boat before but finally deciding to get rid of the jetski and get a more useful watercraft.
If you have another option in the 30k+ price range you'd recommend i'd be happy to hear it also.
Cheers in Advance.

Gel Coat Restoration?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Tue, 2011-03-29 12:07Hi All,
"Dreamweaver's gel coat is suffering a bit from UV exposure and I'm looking at good info on the best way to approach the gelcoat restoration.
There is quite a build up of 'chalky' oxidisation and any amount of various cutting polishes and subsequent applications of waxes just aren't giving the best result I'm after. Being a cuddy cab, it has a large foredeck that has gone quite 'flat' as appearance goes.
I'm no expert in restoration of FRP/FG, hence this post, but, after browsing through a number of sites/pages/blogs etc, there seems to be two ways to go - the traditional de-oxyginisation, polishing and waxing and the new polymer coating technique with products like Vertglas and Polyglow.
On the latter, some folk swear by it and others won't touch it with a bargepole.
It's been suggested that I start off using MEK or acetone to degrease the surface, a dewax solvent or tolurene to remove the previously applied wax then polish buffing and a follow up of wax.
Ok, now down to products - which is best? Maquires gets a good wrap, Sepetone doesn't (I've tried the latter with poor resuts).
Finally, previous attempts have been by hand. Some folk I have talked to is that 'by hand', though much harder work gives a better result - others swear by using a proper electric buffer (not attachments to drills etc).
OK, over to you, lots of areas to cover there. I'm all ears and very grateful in advance for your helpful and knowledgeable advice.

Basic service parts for Merc outboard - where to buy?
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2011-03-29 08:56Just hoping to save a bit of time here.
Going to service my 90hp Merc outboard on the weekend. It is a 1998 model.
Need all the parts to service it, plugs, leg oil, impeller, gaskets etc.
Has anyone recently done this and shopped around for price on parts?
If so could save me the ring around.
Thanks in advance

Single axle trailer question
Submitted by slothwan on Thu, 2011-03-24 09:12Ok, so I've just picked up my new (2nd hand boat). Its a 5.5m ali centre console. I notice that when i lowered the hitch onto my car that the rear shockies nearly bottomed out. It's telling me that there is way too much weight on the hitch.
I've heard many moons ago that the ideal scenario for the positioning of the axle on a single axle trailer is so that there is no more than 120kgs of pressure on the tow hitch, suggesting that it should be leaning on the heavier side to the hitch from the balence ponit. If this is the case it would suggest to me that I need to move the axle frame further foreward. Does anyone know if this "120kg" theory hold any water or if there is a better formular???
Any thoughts?
Cheers

Lowrance elite5m chartplotter problem - how do you make the map auto scroll????!!!
Submitted by Adonis on Fri, 2011-03-18 06:30Hey Guys,
just got one of these chartplotters and can't figure out how to make the map autoscroll while moving. I had an older lowrance chart plotter and when you were just about to track off the screen the map would automatically move so you knew where you were going. With this one I have to keep pressing the arrows to move the map.
Any help would be great!
Cheers!

Computers as a GPS in the boat
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Tue, 2011-03-15 14:33Hey
Who has used or knows someone who uses a computer (laptop) in the boat as a GPS?
What mapping program do they use?
Are there splashproof computers? Do they use solid state drives?
Been giving it some thought but as you never see it in rec boats maybe it is all too hard.
Cheers

Electric motor boat rego & licensing
Submitted by kj on Mon, 2011-03-14 00:39Hi all,
If I get a cheap 3.5m inflatable boat to go on the river with oars and if I decide to put a small 55 LBS electric outboard motor on it, do I need to register the boat for use in WA. Do I also need a skippers ticket? If I do, how much are the rego cost & skipper ticket cost?

Anka Yanka
Submitted by spinksy on Sun, 2011-03-13 08:00Thinking of giving one of these a go. Cheaper than a winch! i know a few on here use them. One question when you drive forward where do you have the rope tied off? To a bow bollard with the rope in the bowsprit? If so is the bowsprit suppose to take the wieght?

Fishing at night from a boat.
Submitted by glastronomic on Sat, 2011-03-12 19:59After spending a nice afternoon last week with "the Supervisor" on his fully decked out boat, the subject of nightfishing came about.
Some very usefull information was kindly given to me, regarding decking out a boat for this.
LED lights were a favoured option to have for this.
Also how to install it so it does not blind you while having it luminate the boat.
I bought 2 x 3mtrs of LED light strings and put one 3mtrs string in my boat just to see how bright it is.
Just switched it on, in the dark, and it is just awsome! and more than enough.
Minimal battery drain is paramount!
Also rigged up a 8w fluro (Malz $9.00) in the bimini for light from "above"
Maybe other tips and to do items regarding fishing at night from a boat could be discussed for all to learn and maybe a fishing expedition at night could be organised soon!
