tranny protection
Submitted by thesupervisor on Wed, 2011-06-22 21:12hii all well my new 1 kw tm270w arrived today
i was wondering does anyone have a protection cover on the tranny to protect from sun damage ?
i just want this to last and as the boat is out of the water more often than in im worried that such a large peaice of black plastic sitting in the sun may get damaged was thinking of getting my trimmer to make a sock up for it out of boat cover material will this cause condensation inside the tranny ?

would you buy one?

would you ever use one of these cheaper motors coming onto the market? personally ive never had any trouble with cheap small motors weather it be chainsaw, bike etc but for putting round the river, i would think one of these would have better reliability the a 2nd handy at the same price, thoughts?

ATTN: suzuki outboard owners
Submitted by scotto on Wed, 2011-06-22 17:18My brand new suzuki outboard that i had fitted late last year, is starting to get a funny looking "scaly" surface on the enamel of the leg, but only in a small localised area, i think near its gearbox. its been there for a few months, but it is progressively getting worse.
the other side of the leg is NEARLY fine, with only a very small amount of the "scaling" only just starting to appear. my concern is its only happening in a localised area, perhaps from heat, or maybe some chemical/oxidization?
anyone else out there know what this is, or had this happen to any of their motors? its a 115 4 stroke.
all feedback appreciated.

Any Raymarine C120 owners out there?
Submitted by Killer7.6 on Tue, 2011-06-21 00:50Just wondering if there is anyone out there who is running a raymarine C120 and has or had the problems i am having at the moment which I hope is just teething dramas:
Firstly the dsm 300 seems to constantly drop out for no apparant reason even when the motor is running and to restart it i need to isolate all power source at the battery isolator-is this common? I am running dual batteries(do i need triples?) and there is a direct power cable to the dsm from the isolator(not from the bus bar) as i have been informed that the dsm does draw a lot of power.
Secondly i recently purchased a TM260 transom mount transducer which i thought would be ideal in water depth 100-150m for sounding fish but am horribly diappointed atm! I cannot hold bottom travelling over 10 knots and to sound around that depth i am struggling at trolling speed?? Is there something i am missing or does anybody have any ideas on how i can improve its performance.
At present i cannot see any benefit from a 1kw over a 6oow tranducer? Ihave used both lowrance and navman systems which were extremely cheaper which i believe did just as good a job if not better.
Any help would be extemely appreciated because i am ready to butch this whole system and look at a furuno replacement.

DYI Towcam.
Submitted by glastronomic on Sat, 2011-06-18 09:31Having seen some wonderfull and impressive footage and life streaming of these underwater kit camera's I like one myself.
So, I am making/assembling one myself.
If I am succesfull then the a way to replicate it is documented here
First of all you need a IP68 rated tube camera with a decent debt of field.
Then you need to make the power- and signal cable longer in a waterproof way.
next you need a towing cable that can withstand a chewing from the gamefish and friends and manufacture the wings to make it tow straight.
Next you need a TV monitor on board to broadcast.
I have found a suitable camera at Altronics @ $270 rec. retail. but got it for $219
S9139 SK-2120 (92") Colour Submersible CCD Sony Sensor Bullet Camera with Infra Red mode. waterproof to 30 mtrs
I am getting a LED Monitor/TV/DVD today (less than $200)and also at the shop above was a swivel TV bracket system on special ($5)!! so the monitor can be swiveled into the door opening of the cabin and the pictures can be seen while we are going along on deck!
When not in use the TV/DVD can be pushed out of the way and used in the cabin.
I have tested the camera yesterday on an already installed and in use underwater ready bought Kit.
And the pictures from this camera unit are excelent.
It is not full Hi Def but very very good even in IR mode!
Also the debt of field is brilliant.
So so far it seems to be going in the right direction.
Let me know here if this is of any interest otherwise the Modds can delete this topic if it contravines any rules or annoys someone.

Adjusting Dunbier Boat Trailer.
Submitted by surfer on Thu, 2011-06-16 10:39G'day Guys,
Have a question about adjusting a dunbier boat trailer for our 575 cruisecraft.
At the moment when the boat goes on the trailer it has a definite lean to one side. Have measured the trailer rollers and eveyrthing seems symmetrical. The boat looks like it is sitting level when in the water.
So why does the boat have a lean to one side when retrieved on the trailer and what do I need to do to level the boat out on the trailer.

Wanting to add an easy to erect outrigger system and can do with some advise please.
Submitted by glastronomic on Wed, 2011-06-15 08:49In my quest to get ready for rock and roll Exmouth fising contest next summer,
I would like to add an outrigger system to my tub.
Can do with advise from people who heve expirience in this regard.
I have very little expirience in this regard with the modern set ups.
Been to the shops and found a decent outrigger hardware Kit (lines, glass weights, clips etc, all in one) in a nice and very friendly staffed tackle shop in Scarborough.
I am thinking off adding 2 extra rocket launchers to my hardtop set up and to weld them on in an almost horizontal/ LAY DOWN possition.
Use the bolts through the SS tube to actualy bolt the rods in, (they have a wooden bottom end)
Buy 2 beach rods that are white, to use as outrigger poles (they are 12ft long).
Add the outrigger kit to it plus a katrol and cleat on either side!
Would this work well?
from each outrigger rod I would get at least 3mtr span outside the boat which = 6 mtr plus the boats beam, over 2 mtrs.
Total span somewhere in the vacinity of 7+mtrs.
Would the beach rods be able to withstand the pulling of the lures & dead bait (Rigged up Mullets and small Tuna's)?
Your constructive input is eagerly awaited

Tuning Furuno FCV 620
Submitted by bsir on Fri, 2011-06-10 12:56I recently installed a Furuno 620 sounder on the boat.
Thansks to those on the forum that contributed to the decision.
This now stands beside my Lowrance LCX sounder, and performs significantly better than the LCX when looking at the bottom reading (even with it all in manual). I'm pretty impressed with the 620.
I have seen on this and other forums talk of a tuning manual (other than the standard manual than comes with the unit.
Does anyone have a copy of this?
Can anyone provide any tips on manually tuning these units for bottom fishing in 30-60m of water?

Surtees/barcrusher/chivers sharks
Submitted by fat belly dog on Fri, 2011-06-10 12:54Surtees/barcrusher/chivers
Looking at buying a new alloy boat in the 5.5-6.1m range and these three are on an ever changing short list…
After a boat that’s suitable for inshore/back of 3 mile metro fishing, good enough to go widish on a good day, safe for family (2 adults and three kids under 12) summer cruise to rotto and return with the seabreeze…, light enough to tow north and south a couple of times a year and be beach launchable for trips to parrys/denmark/sandy cape with the current tow vehicle (prado V6).
Read thru the old posts and all three of these boats get good reviews, would appreciate any feed back from people that own one or been in one and if possible would like to have a talk about the boat or a crawl over one check out motor options etc before splashing the hard earned on one…
Like the 5.5m workmate but not sure if it will be big enough for the family days on the water. Chivers 190 thresher looks good on paper, yet to see one in the flesh and it’s the same with the BC
Cheers

Commodore Marine
Submitted by Commodore Marine on Sun, 2011-06-05 12:13Dear Fishwrecked followers
I write to advise that Commodore Marine Pty Ltd was placed into liquidation on 2 June 2011. Kim Wallman, of HLB Mann Judd (Insolvency WA) is the liquidator and from now on, will be the first point of contact for Commodore Marine.
I was left with no option but to appoint Kim after my efforts to sell the business of Commodore Marine had stalled in recent weeks. Whilst I am deeply disappointed with this outcome, it was the only option that remained after many months of holding the business together.
All is not lost however - under Kim’s guidance, we are surveying the options to sell all or part of the business which as this point in time, appears to be in the best interests of the creditors of the company.
If you have any queries in relation to the liquidation, please contact Kim on 08 9215 7900.
Thank you for your support over the years.

Gelcoat repairs / Restorers
Submitted by Anthony Hall 87 on Fri, 2011-06-03 23:40G'day,
Hoping someone can help me out here. I have an old sharkcat (Bruce Harris 565 series), she is an ex rescue boat and is a beatiful bright canary yellow colour . I have just recently installed new motors and while I'm not overly concerned about cosmetic I have started to think about getting her re- coated. The gelcoat is fairly well faded and has a fair few cracks in certain places.
Just wondering if anyone could recommend anyone or if anyone has any idea of the costs that are involved (rough estimate obviously) ?? Would be nice to get her looking like she just came off the factory floor again....
Cheers in advance.

Using Elec reel on 2nd Battery?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2011-06-02 17:02Going out tomorrow and have got a third battery for my leccy reel and have it on charge over night but suspect it may die at some point in time as it's probably pretty cactus as its extremely old.
I was thinking about using my boats second battery and rather than having to unhook it, was wondering if I just isolate it on the hersey switch would it allow me to use the reel without having any impact on the outboard/electrics etc? I know I should probably just unhook it, but wondering if anyone else does it and its not a problem? I guess each boat may be different, but figure if that battery is not selected then there shouldn't be any impact on anything else...

Minn Kota Trim Tabs
Submitted by Dizzy on Tue, 2011-05-31 21:05Hi All,
I'm after a set of Minn Kota Trim Tabs with the Indicator switch for our Chivers Eagle 2000
(9x12 tabs / short stroke actuators / indicator switch)
I'd like to support local, but the price difference is ridiculous - so I'm looking ex-USA, but am having a hard time getting all the gear from one spot.
Thought I had it sorted from iBoats and Amazon, but it went pear-shaped at checkout ("unable to ship to destination")
If there's anyone who knows of an online one-stop-shop for these components, please let me know !
Regards,
Dizz.

Sounder fitting - who does it?
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2011-05-31 20:30I bought myself a Furuno 620 the other day (yes Jamie - 620 not 585 )
I've stripped the old sounder out of the boat, and had intended to fit the new one, but have been stuck working a lot the last few weekends and have not gotten around to it.
As a result, I have no sounder.
Have decided would rather spend any spare time fishing rather than fitting it, so if anyone is knowledgable and would like to fit it for a fee (or can recommend a marine sparky that wont charge the world - if such a guy exists) then would be keen to hear about it.
Thanks
Dan

Outboard Upgrade Question
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2011-05-31 09:37A mate of mine is looking to upgrade his out board from an old 2 stroke to a new or second hand 4 stroke or maybe etec. He's looking at a 140 or 150hp model, has anyone recently upgraded into this hp size and have a cost comparison of the Etec to the 4 strokes and what that cost is? 4 stroke is proabably a suzi or yami, but also keen to see what evinrude can do compared too.. The boat is an 18/19ft Chivers.
Cheers,
Adam

new tinny!
Submitted by JIM1 on Tue, 2011-05-31 01:04got myself a unlic 10ft savage with a 5hp suzuki motor tonight, all up its going to be less that $500 on the water so im pretty stoked, going to rig it up as my bream assault weapon on solo trips, the hull dosnt look like it will plain to easy but its been freshly painted so looks the part.
i have a 11ft with a 9.9hp and that gets on the plain ok but i saw a hydrofoil dohicky on the net an was after an opinion if its worth putting one on the new tinny.. fairly short shaft so not sure if it will be to effective.
will post up some pics tomorrow, test run later in the week or sat morning!!

4 seasons boats
Submitted by constablechris on Mon, 2011-05-30 18:38
Hello people,
Has anyone dealt with these boats before?
http://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/used/power-boats/4-seasons-540-gulfrunner/46114
I doubt I would bother with the motor but I am interested in the hull. I am trying to get hold of specs, like engine rating, hull thickness etc, but I am in Darwin so wonder if any of you lot in WA have heard good bad or indifferent.
Where are they made? I see nothing on google
Regards
Chris
