Old merc mechanic needed !!!
Submitted by Ric on Sun, 2011-02-27 17:37Hi there, can anyone recomend a good out board mechanic, that knows the old stuff ???
i have a very old boat that i got off a mate for a good deal, with a 55 mariner ( i recon some where about mid 70'S model ? )
However its hard to start and floods easy, i have taken it down to a dealer in Yangebup and spent nearly 400 for them to fix it, But its exactly the same as when i took it in there, im not taking it back im well over them... ill just cut my losses ...
So if any one can recomend some one that knows what there doing, pref south of the river, it would be very much appreciated
Cheers

Rod holders on tinnies
Submitted by hlokk on Sun, 2011-02-27 15:35Well, time to replace my plastic rod holders with proper steel ones on my tinny before I do any serious trolling (hoping it'll get a work out in Jurien, Kalbarri and Exmouth this year. Macks, tuna and marlin is the plan ;) ). Only have the two small corner plates which will only fit one holder each.
For those who have done a bit of trolling with spreads in tinnies, how have you had the rod holders setup? Thinking of a few options:
1. Rod holders straight back. Easy for the rods (especially ones without pins). Could run another rod square to the boat off the gunwhale? Harder to put a centre holder in?
2. At an angle. 30-45 degrees, maybe less. Bit more spread, room for a centre line maybe (quite like having a long centre when trolling for tuna, mackies, etc). Rods dont sit as well though (not without repinning).
3. Put the back rod holders at 90 degrees. Still works well for gimballed rods. Much wider spread, heaps of room for one in the centre, but cant run another from the side of the boat.
Always good to get a few opinions from people before cutting more holes in my boat :p

DEMONSTRATION STOCK
Submitted by Commodore Marine on Wed, 2011-02-23 13:26DEMONSTRATION STOCK
We have an opportunity for a small number of new boat owners to participate in a Demonstration Stock requirement.
We have been getting significant enquiries from across Australia but due to our distribution being factory direct, there is a need to have some new boat owners participate in allowing us to have boats available to allow potential buyers to view and also try.
We have put together a very attractive package for new boat owners to assist in this and should you be considering buying one of our boats, it may prove very, very worthwhile.
We are looking for new owners in Perth, Karratha, Darwin, Townsville/Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
If you would like to know more about this, please contact me direct and all discussions are in complete confidence.
Regards

Boat steering
Submitted by Simo_ on Wed, 2011-02-23 06:57I had the steering cable on my boat replaced on my boat a few weeks ago after it snapped. Since then the steering pulls hard right if I let go of wheel.
Any ideas why. Did they put it on wrong or what?

NuTeak Decking solution
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2011-02-22 15:27Anyone heard of this?
there was a stand at the Freo boat show with it on display, and samples given out
Am considering this as an option other than carpet, has a 20 year warranty i believe.
Cost ive been given is $290 SQM or $500 fitted, which isnt too bad half the price of teak!
Thing is i think its not been used in Australia yet, first shipment here in a few weeks.
Anyone seen or heard about this product at all?
Cheers

Marine wheel bearings?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2011-02-21 12:35Hi Gang,
I'm in the last process of buying the boat and its in for inspection at a trailer joint. The guy has given me the option to check the current bearings (changed a year ago) and just re-grease them or if I want the owner will pay for new marine wheel bearings (apparently greaseless?) which I have no idea about and will cost about $370 (his expense). Can anyone enlighten me regarding these marine bearings and if they would be good for long distances, hot conditions etc?
Cheers,
Adam

Tee Toppers for C/Console
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sun, 2011-02-20 13:00Hi Guys,
Haven't bought my boat yet, but getting close. Just wondering if anyone has put a tee-topper on their center console and who you got it done by and roughly what it cost. I haven't decided if I want a permanent one or a fold down one, but thinking having the sturdy locked in one would probably be better. Just want to be prepared for a few weeks time.
Cheers,
Adam

Bought new prop
Submitted by Mainey on Wed, 2011-02-16 07:40Was going to Perth for the weekend so I took my prop with me, thinking I would get a second prop with different pitch rate
went to "Just Propellers WA" in Osbourne Park, Michael looked at my prop, that I thought was 'ok' and put it on the test machine he has there and spun it like it would on the boat.
To my amazement it was running all over the place, it was pretty well stuffed as the photo suggests, but to a total novice it looked ok on the boat LOL
I decided there an then to replace it, so bought a 10.3 x 12 instead of the specified prop, as was advised this will get me out of the water and on the plane faster, going to test it out as soon as I finish this.

tight steering
Submitted by dakka on Tue, 2011-02-15 20:49
howdy all
the steering on my boat is pretty tight, the helm and morse cable have been replaced recently.when i take off the link arm the the steering is great. the problem i have is that i cant turn the motor by itself without struggling, i have greased up the 3 grease nipples that i can see on my mariner motor it became a bit easier to turn by hand, but about 5 minuets later it is tight again any suggestions as to what i can do next to free it up permanantly. i would think you should be able to move your motor manually with ease by hand.
cheers

perfect beach launch boat
Submitted by grayzeee on Tue, 2011-02-15 16:05what do you think makes a perfect beach launchable trailer boat for exploring the whole WA coast??
ideal size ? obviously not too big that you can't lauch off any beach but not too small that you can't get out offshore safely.
if i'm hearing right , you have to drag the boat up the beach a bit before trailering , so that def put's the stops on fibreglass.
what would you be looking for??

Fresh Water on the boat
Submitted by Cammos on Mon, 2011-02-14 18:14Chasing some ideas on how to get a freshwater deckwash/shower into my 20ft Southwind. A mate has fitted a Car Cube in his 670 Commodore, but I think I really need upwards of 25L for a 3 to 4 day trip. I hope to use it for washing myself down after a dive, and maybe drinking water too at a pinch. BIAS and Whitworths don't seem to list anything online. Anybody have experience with getting bladders under the seats in the cabin?

Dive bottle holders
Submitted by spinksy on Mon, 2011-02-14 07:28Had a bit of a dilemma with where to put some dive bottle holders forward in the boat without drilling into my seat boxes. Found these suction cups on the net they are rated to 50kg and solved my problem they work great... I bought the cups on their own and attached my own tank holders.. Check out their website these things have a heap of uses wihout fixing on your boat www.seasucker.com I bought 4 and it cost me about 50 bucks postage...

temp gauge not working
Submitted by jezman on Sat, 2011-02-12 17:13i have a Merc 140 2 stroke and my temp gauge has stopped working, could someone point me in the right direction as to where the sensor is so i can check the wiring. with my engine experience in the past the sensors are normally on the heads somewhere?
Alternative to winch cable
Submitted by dkonig82 on Fri, 2011-02-11 09:53Had a hell of a night last night.
Winch cable on the boat somehow jumped out of the spool that holds it and got caught between the gear and the housing of the winch. I was holding the boat and mate was on winch.
He didnt realise and kept winching, but it then got really jammed in there. Over 2.5hours to retrieve the boat in strong winds.
Have had a couple of issues with the cable before, looking at alternatives. Boat is a 5.5m glass.
What do people recommend? I need something that wont be a massive pain in the ass to attach to my winch. Have seen ski rope etc used in the past but my trailer isnt brand new and the boat doesnt just glide on there, so need something that can take some winching (especially for shallow ramps and beach launching etc)
Cheers

penguin phantom foam bildge
Submitted by benfrenchh on Thu, 2011-02-10 11:59I'm replaceing the deck on my penguin phantom and have removed all the foam from the bilge as it was water logged. luckily the wood in the stringers is still solid if a little damp in places (they must have put something either very rot resistent or treated in there). Don't really want top replace the foam as it will just trap any water that gets in there in the future and I don't want to be removing the deck again! Presumably the foam provided boyancy but I'm also wondering how much structural strength it provided? the deck/bilge foam/hull combination probably created a fairly stong surfboard like structure with wooden stringers. so the question is, do i need to replace the foam with ether more foam or some kind of rib structure or just leave it empty and glass on a new deck (preferable)?

Evinrude dramas
Submitted by kamo king on Tue, 2011-02-08 12:33I have an 85 year 70hp evinrude outboard and am having fuel dramas. For example loosing fuel pressure at idle, it just dies in the ass after all the fuel in the lines has been used up wont suck out of the tank but if you pump the fuel bulb tight again it will run no dramas until its used all that fuel again. Don’t have any problems when I’m out cruising around only at idle? Replaced fuel bulb, checked breathers on fuel tanks all ok, checked all fuel lines for leaks none, stripped fuel pump and cleaned diaphragm ok, but there was a bit of grit in there! Cleaned fuel filter and cleaned all plugs. Still playing up could it be low compression in one of the cylinders runs fine when its going it’s not missing at all, or is fuel pump on the way out.
Any help appreciated

Trailcraft Info ?
Submitted by C.mon u Bastard on Mon, 2011-02-07 16:22Gday.
This is my dinghy. If any experienced trailcraft people could offer any info, be cool? year of manufacture etc...
I started to rip the floor up as i wanted to install a cheapy bilge pump (cause of last weeks freak storm). Noticed heaps of sand. So i then stripped all of the flooring out. Heaps of sand, sea-weed and old fishing tackle. I cleaned it out and scraped any flaking paint. Had planned on repainting it, but have run out of time. i.e i want to take it out fishing tomorow.
If anyone knows of a source for the decals, please let me know? as I'd like to repaint the outside at some stage too.
thanks for checking it out.

LOOKING AT BUYING FI-GLASS DOMINATOR, OPINIONS
Submitted by clogwog on Sat, 2011-02-05 16:44G'day,
Been looking at boats for over two months and struggling to find something I like, until today.
I've been chasing a 15-17.5 foot fibreglass boat (haines, savage, etc) that is suitable for fishing the five fathom, 3 mile,
cockburn sound with an occasional trip further out when the conditions suit. Also want something thats not too big
so that I can tow it North/South to fish Kalbarri, Exmouth and the like.
I came across the fi-glass dominator today, its a 5.1 mtr fibreglass boat, powered by a 60hp merc,
comes complete with all safety gear, radio, bimini, the dealer has said he will upgrade the safety to an
offshore kit including epirb and offshore flares, comes with 6 year hull warranty, 5 year motor warranty
and three years on the trailer all for under $30,000. I reckon this is a pretty good price as a similar size savage
or haines signature is around about $27000 2nd hand.
Just wondering if anyone may have owned one of these boats or has been in one and could give an indication
on there performance, (it may take a kiwi to answer this question as they are made in NZ)
any help would be greatly appreciated.

bearing races
Submitted by Simon C on Thu, 2011-02-03 08:20Just after an opinion from the mechanically minded here. Servicing/changing wheel bearings last night before heading up to exxy next week. The one with the oldschool cap was perfect - no water, grease still red. Two of the other three were not great, grease black, bit of water in one. When I replaced the bearing set on the shot one the new race was tight to hammer in, but once seated it spun. Is this a problem or fairly common? Do I need a new hub or some kind of locktight to sit it in. Or when it heats up will it expand and stop spinning - any advice would be good. I have also made a decision to piss off the bearing buddies and go back to caps and just service more regularly. Maybe i had rubbish BB and need to go to trailer parts, but I thought they were the expensive ones already (can't remember bought them years ago).
