Alternative to winch cable
Submitted by dkonig82 on Fri, 2011-02-11 09:53Had a hell of a night last night.
Winch cable on the boat somehow jumped out of the spool that holds it and got caught between the gear and the housing of the winch. I was holding the boat and mate was on winch.
He didnt realise and kept winching, but it then got really jammed in there. Over 2.5hours to retrieve the boat in strong winds.
Have had a couple of issues with the cable before, looking at alternatives. Boat is a 5.5m glass.
What do people recommend? I need something that wont be a massive pain in the ass to attach to my winch. Have seen ski rope etc used in the past but my trailer isnt brand new and the boat doesnt just glide on there, so need something that can take some winching (especially for shallow ramps and beach launching etc)
Cheers

penguin phantom foam bildge
Submitted by benfrenchh on Thu, 2011-02-10 11:59I'm replaceing the deck on my penguin phantom and have removed all the foam from the bilge as it was water logged. luckily the wood in the stringers is still solid if a little damp in places (they must have put something either very rot resistent or treated in there). Don't really want top replace the foam as it will just trap any water that gets in there in the future and I don't want to be removing the deck again! Presumably the foam provided boyancy but I'm also wondering how much structural strength it provided? the deck/bilge foam/hull combination probably created a fairly stong surfboard like structure with wooden stringers. so the question is, do i need to replace the foam with ether more foam or some kind of rib structure or just leave it empty and glass on a new deck (preferable)?

Evinrude dramas
Submitted by kamo king on Tue, 2011-02-08 12:33I have an 85 year 70hp evinrude outboard and am having fuel dramas. For example loosing fuel pressure at idle, it just dies in the ass after all the fuel in the lines has been used up wont suck out of the tank but if you pump the fuel bulb tight again it will run no dramas until its used all that fuel again. Don’t have any problems when I’m out cruising around only at idle? Replaced fuel bulb, checked breathers on fuel tanks all ok, checked all fuel lines for leaks none, stripped fuel pump and cleaned diaphragm ok, but there was a bit of grit in there! Cleaned fuel filter and cleaned all plugs. Still playing up could it be low compression in one of the cylinders runs fine when its going it’s not missing at all, or is fuel pump on the way out.
Any help appreciated

Trailcraft Info ?
Submitted by C.mon u Bastard on Mon, 2011-02-07 16:22Gday.
This is my dinghy. If any experienced trailcraft people could offer any info, be cool? year of manufacture etc...
I started to rip the floor up as i wanted to install a cheapy bilge pump (cause of last weeks freak storm). Noticed heaps of sand. So i then stripped all of the flooring out. Heaps of sand, sea-weed and old fishing tackle. I cleaned it out and scraped any flaking paint. Had planned on repainting it, but have run out of time. i.e i want to take it out fishing tomorow.
If anyone knows of a source for the decals, please let me know? as I'd like to repaint the outside at some stage too.
thanks for checking it out.

LOOKING AT BUYING FI-GLASS DOMINATOR, OPINIONS
Submitted by clogwog on Sat, 2011-02-05 16:44G'day,
Been looking at boats for over two months and struggling to find something I like, until today.
I've been chasing a 15-17.5 foot fibreglass boat (haines, savage, etc) that is suitable for fishing the five fathom, 3 mile,
cockburn sound with an occasional trip further out when the conditions suit. Also want something thats not too big
so that I can tow it North/South to fish Kalbarri, Exmouth and the like.
I came across the fi-glass dominator today, its a 5.1 mtr fibreglass boat, powered by a 60hp merc,
comes complete with all safety gear, radio, bimini, the dealer has said he will upgrade the safety to an
offshore kit including epirb and offshore flares, comes with 6 year hull warranty, 5 year motor warranty
and three years on the trailer all for under $30,000. I reckon this is a pretty good price as a similar size savage
or haines signature is around about $27000 2nd hand.
Just wondering if anyone may have owned one of these boats or has been in one and could give an indication
on there performance, (it may take a kiwi to answer this question as they are made in NZ)
any help would be greatly appreciated.

bearing races
Submitted by Simon C on Thu, 2011-02-03 08:20Just after an opinion from the mechanically minded here. Servicing/changing wheel bearings last night before heading up to exxy next week. The one with the oldschool cap was perfect - no water, grease still red. Two of the other three were not great, grease black, bit of water in one. When I replaced the bearing set on the shot one the new race was tight to hammer in, but once seated it spun. Is this a problem or fairly common? Do I need a new hub or some kind of locktight to sit it in. Or when it heats up will it expand and stop spinning - any advice would be good. I have also made a decision to piss off the bearing buddies and go back to caps and just service more regularly. Maybe i had rubbish BB and need to go to trailer parts, but I thought they were the expensive ones already (can't remember bought them years ago).

Help with installing in hull transducer
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Wed, 2011-02-02 16:26Hey guys
I plan on installing a 1kw in hull transducer soon and there seems to be some debate on what liquid people use to fill the tank.
I've heard everything from distilled water to cooking oil to anti freeze coolant.
Who has had one or installed one themselves and what did you use?
Thanks
Tim

carrying extra fuel
Submitted by CCC on Fri, 2011-01-28 22:46Hi
Planning a big trip in the boat (5.8 centre console) and will need to double the fuel capacity by carrying an extra 180Ls fuel. At the moment the plan is to carry 9x 20L plastic jerry cans.
How do you carry extra fuel? Any smarter/safer ideas out there. The boat's a 5.8 centre console.
How do you decant the fuel into main tank
Thanks in advance

How likely to make a warranty claim on a new outboard?
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2011-01-28 21:01Hi guys
If you had to choose between 2 brand new engines, a 130 etec with a 5 year warrantly or a brand new Suzuki 150 4 stroke with no warranty (from the US), which would you go for?
If they were both local engines and the same price I would jump on the Suzuki without hesitation.
They are both the same price. Would you take the gamble and go for the 150 Suzuki?
Cheers

Oxidation - Cut and Polish help
Submitted by Borbs on Fri, 2011-01-28 16:36Need help re polishing fibregalss boat.
Boat sat for a few years up north in the sun and has heavy oxidation (boat is dark blue). Have tried to cut and polish with several brands, it seems the polish just gets absorbed into the surface and results in extensive swirls - tried by hand and machine. I don'tpolish in the heat or direct sunlight.
Trying get boat up to specs to get back on the water.
Any tips appreciated.

GPS /Fishfinder dillema
Submitted by iana on Thu, 2011-01-27 17:36I have a Navman GPS mounted in my boat 6" screen, and a 4" grey scale fish finder mounted tempory until I can afford a better unit. I happened to mention to my Bro inlaw that my fish finder was crap. Come my 60th birthday and I get given this.
Its a Lowrance LCX112C I have mounted it on the dash of the boat, and it looks a bit oversize. Its something that would be fitted to a 40 ft fishing boat. The equivalant is the HDS10. I have a 5.5 m Baron, I have to look over it to see where I'm going. I am findingthe thought of undoing all the wiring I have just done, the fitting, net working etc etc a bit daunting.
Should I
1/ fit this unit and to hell with the way it looks, to hell with the extra work. or-
2/ trade or sell this unit and just buy a smaller fish finder to sit along side my Navman 6500? and have less work or worry?
And no I won't get someone else to wire it up, cant afford it.
What is your opinon.

Submitted by spanishmackeral on Tue, 2011-01-25 18:53just bought 2 new hds units off ebay (hds-5m &hds-5x).
im just wondering what to do with some of the wires. from the power/data outlet on the unit there are 2 cables. One cable is the positive & negative power cable (what does the yellow wake-up wire do) and the other cable is the data cable with yellow, blue, orange and green what do these connect to? the shield (ground wire) does this ground to the hull of the boat or to a common earth wire?

Radio Problems
Submitted by Percula on Mon, 2011-01-24 09:10Hey All
I need some help with the radio in my old mans boat.
He originally had one in there, but it hasn't worked for a while. Power to it but its always just static and can't here anyone talking etc
So I thought it had just past its used by date, and time for a new one.
So bought a new one, put it in, headed out and seemed to be working fine. Here everyone etc etc
But, I turned the sounder on, and the radio went all statically (word?) so I just thought it was interference, and turned the radio off (was only in the harbour).
Anyway later on turned the sounder off and the radio back on, but still all I get is static!! So I am worried now that its not the radio at all!
The sounder/radio are run off different wiring, but not sure if they hook up to the same battery or not (haven't checked yet) and there is the 4 way switch (1/2/both/off) but this isn't connected to the accessories, so thinking the accesories are connected straight to the batteries.
Surely I haven't stuffed the radio from turning the sounder on? I will check to see if they are running of different batteries, but surely this isn't the problem??
Any ideas greatly appreciated??
