Boatshow
Submitted by dpost80 on Tue, 2008-08-12 14:16In the market for a few bit's and pieces... 50-75 hp 4 stroke outboard; Furuno 585 fish finder, transducer, gps/chart plotter, marine radio (maybe even an entire dinghy, lol)... my question is.... is it worthwhile getting all these at the upcoming Boatshow? Do all the suppliers have bargain deals only available at the show? Or is it all a bit of hype and the prices are normal (perhaps even inflated?)...
Opinions would be appreciated.
cheers,
damo

Is YOUR boat compliant?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Tue, 2008-07-15 12:04Just received DPI's Boating Communities newsletter. Thought it worth posting for those that have boats arelooking at getting one - especially new boats.
There's an article titled Registration stickers and numbers.
In the articles, and I quote (extracts):
Annual Registration Sticker
'...where on your boat should you put your annual registration sticker? The answer is on your port side adjacent to the registration number'
Registration Numbers
'It is in the interests of visibility that the location of the registration numbers must be amidships on both sides for power boats. ... The numbers must be 150mm high for a powerboat....and must contrast with the hull colour....

Raymarine a65 comments and dealer?
Submitted by till on Sat, 2008-07-12 08:53Hi,
interested in opinions and dealers for the Raymarine A65? Its a combo gps/chartplotter/fishfinder. Sure I'd also love the C80 with the ability to add in radar and radio, but its overkill for the intended application.

Old Boats
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2008-07-10 15:37Does anyone happen to know if there are places that buy old boats?
We have a 17.6 Ft fibre which would be around 20 years old i spose.
The engine has had it and needs replacing, but the hull seems to be in perfect condition. The rest of the boat ie: canopy, interior seats etc have withered away over time, and would need restoration.
Just wondering if anyone knows of places that take these types of boats and does them up or something??

New fuel tank
Submitted by PACEMAKER on Sun, 2008-06-29 21:24After gaining more experience on the water I have noticed I am starting to cover more deeper ground which has raised the issue of fuel tank capacity. I decided to remove the existing 100L tank and have a bigger tank made. This will increase tank capacity to 180 odd Litres. I have been quoted $1200.00 for the tank to be made from 4mm alloy, fully baffled with fuel pickup tube and large inspection cover. Im also going to supply a fuel sock to go on the end of the pickup line. All installed. I should add that the tank is not just a square or rectangular shape, it has to follow the shape of the hull to maximise room available. Does this sound like a reasonable price??
Cheers

In development
Submitted by Commodore Marine on Fri, 2008-06-20 15:54OK Guys, Feedback and input wanted.
This may open a can of worms, but the best way to know what people want is to ask them
At Commodore Marine we are developing a new boat that is aimed a the fisho and as such we need input. The input we would like is things that you find good and bad on a boat and how you would set it up. Now I know that everyone has their own likes and dislikes so let not ridicule other thoughts but express you own for the purpose of building a better boat.
The details of the boat from a size will be kept under wraps for the moment, but it is a trailer boat. The other thing is that we will look at the suggestions in regards to our existing line of boats.
We will be asking a few of the people responding to come to a couple of meetings regarding the boat so we can walk and talk over it.
We look forward to your input.

Help with Lowrance GPS/Sounder
Submitted by Archie on Tue, 2008-06-17 20:22Hey All,
My Lowrance LCX27C GPS/Sounder is playing up. It comes up with a "GPS module not responding" message when it fires up. I've checked the GPS module and it's fine. I was wondering if anyone out there has an LCX25 or LCX 27 that would mind helping out. I've been told that either the cables/T connectors or the head unit itself could be the problem.
Any help would be appreciated

Star Boats pictures/info?
Submitted by till on Thu, 2008-06-12 20:28
Hi,
just wondering if anyone has any snaps/info/experience with these, just by chance. A few seem to turn up in the Quokka on occcasions, mostly 10 - 20yrs old.
I hear they were locally-built, but the business has since closed. I also heard the designer later went off to build some high speed cat ferries down Henderson way, but having done a lot of commercial boats on the way. I'm also told that the Penguins ala Auslobster are done by a few ex-employees of the same firm.
Just trying to get an idea of how they shape up, beamwidth, deadrise etc and how they perform at sea.
Ta,

Logging on
Submitted by Rob_Seed on Sat, 2008-06-07 23:44G'day,
Can somone give me some pointers regarding logging on and off with the sea rescue?
From my TL3 course I did about 5 years ago I remember the following things you have to state,
- Fuel quantity
- How many people on bord
- expected arrival time
- intended destination
- Call sighn
- Size of your boat?
Im just having drama with the order, Have I missed anything? If somone could give me an example of the conversation they have when logging on an off it would be great.
Cheers

yet another boat thread: whose 5-5.5m alu centre console on the cheap?
Submitted by till on Tue, 2008-06-03 17:38
Hi,
just me thinking with my mouth open, any advice offered appreciated.
I've had my eyes on whats in the quokka, online in various sources, and mostly been looking at used because money is an object (that I have little of). I really want something up to 5.5m, pref over 5m, as then its easily trailerable, yet we can take it a fair way offshore. Our tow vehicle can handle the weight, and I don't think I'd have to go for a tandem and trailer brakes at that size either which may save a few bucks.
Secondhand I haven't really seen much compelling, and I notice that a lot of the boats in that size are rolled, not plate boats which would probably be preferred.
I was surprised to see a local plate boat builder can do up a bare hull for the following prices; 5m/$10k, 5.3m/$13k & 5.6m/$16k. I guess a trailer is around $2k-3k new, and then is motor and fitout. I can poach some of the safety gear from my brother's old dingy, that should save a few bucks too.
Are those prices typical for a bare bones centre console? Who else makes them? Who should be avoided =)

Marine cd player
Submitted by Jack on Tue, 2008-06-03 07:33Howdy people, Im chasing a bit of info on the GR 968 Marine cd player. (Pretty sure it's a GME) During my last trip to Can't Tell Ya bay my stereo stopped producing sound. I can see on the front of the stereo that the cd or radio is playing but no sound. I have hooked up another speaker to it and it wont produce sound either. I have put the Multimeter on the wires coming out of the back of the stereo and it's only putting out 0.82 volts to the speakers. I was wondering if anyone could do the same and see what there's is putting out or if anyone knew roughly what it should be putting out before i pulled it to bit's. Any help would be great.
Cheers
Jack
