Adding brakes to trailer (Now purchasing a new one ally vs galv ?)
I posted this on another forum. But thought I may as well ask here too. I am looking for a replacement trailer for the right price, but failing have one turn up I am working on the following as an idea.
I think I know the answer to this but thought I would ask the gurus on here if they can see a problem with the plan.
My current boat trailer is rated to 750kg and is un-braked. The springs and axle are due for a change and the whole package weighs in at 960kg. I get so cranky that dealerships let these packages out the door overloaded (Is second hand so no recourse for me unfortunately). The thought of insurance turning me down if something happened is keeping me awake at night as well........
Anyway, The trailer is a John Pappas with a single tow pole from the point where the sides of the trailer meet. It is a 65mm (outside measurements) square tube and I cant get an override coupling to fit. I could cut the whole drawbar off and fit a 75mm one, but I am trying to avoid disturbing the galvanising. So my plan was to cut back the drawbar, fit a 75mm sleeve over the top and bolt it on in two or three spots. Then fit the coupling to this and move forward with fitting brakes to the trailer. Then it will need a RWC etc to be legally able to tow my boat around :)
Can anyone find any flaws in the plan or have another suggestion ?

I sugest the S line
I sugest the S line axle.(larger bearing mounts, ) and go for one piece springs, Have you considered trading the trailer for one with brakes?
The sleve you fit might hold salt water between it and the original drawbar, you may need to seal it with silastic to keep the water out. or weld it and regalvanise.
Talk to the person who will inspect it for lisencing , as some times their interpretation of the law will be difrent to yours or mine.

OK to pass licencing
OK to pass licencing inspection you will need to pay attention to details and workmanship.
1. The trailer frame needs to be engineered and built to carry the load. Cutting, sleeving, and bolting on a new draw bar, is not the best of practices and still leaves you with the original bar as a weak point at the frame attachment point. This could be a show stopper.
2. Axel, bearings, and springs. If your trailer has a 750kg max load at present, chances are it has holden bearings. A single axel with holden bearings has a max rating of 1000kg. Ford bearings and axel rate around 1250kg.
3. Wheels and tyres. What are the load ratings. You may have to go to a LT tyre to comply.
Head off to somewhere like Trailer parts and see if they have any advice on upgrades.
Trading your existing trailer for a compliant one may be your best bet!

That would be the best bet to trade it in. Will take it to a few places to get some quotes.
Aware it will need new springs and a bigger axle and minimum of ford bearings to be compliant load wise. The rest of the trailer is identical to the braked version of the JP trailer (The tow pole is the only difference).
Good point re the holding water for the sleeve. That was something I hadn't thought of.
Cheers guys,

Looks like a new trailer is the go. Prices are a bit more than I thought but that's the way it goes I guess. I am about to pull the trigger on a JP 89B. My only concern is beach launches will be hard with this trailer. Has anyone beach launched with a JP trailer with ease ? Or is it too much of a problem ?
Cheers,

That's the ticket, nice and simple.
I am also going to try and check out an ally trailer I have seen on Gumtree.
I was concerned about the beach launching after talking to roadmaster about their setup that has been designed specifically for shallow launch/recoveries.
Cheers for the feedback guys,
