Most of the talk above is
Most of the talk above is about lists/salary cap space, and fails to consider possibly the most important aspect of team success..... A good coach and a good game plan with buy in from the players! The game plan obviously has to be suited to the players that you have to execute it and that's where the coaches role is absolutely critical!!
The race between West Coast and Freo will largely be won by the team who gets a good coach first in my opinion. Simpson is going to struggle in the immediate future with the health of the list but has always largely been a bit of a copycat coach. Longmuir is then the classic example of the assistant coach that brings the game plan from the club they were at and then as soon as the rest of the competition moves on, they are completely lost!
I called that after watching a few quarters of Freo in round 1 and that has almost certainly proven itself to be accurate now.
This weekends fixture is going to tell us alot about where most teams are truly at I think! Looking forward to it :)

I've heard from an ex-AFL
I've heard from an ex-AFL player long out of the game who witnessed Craig McRae address his players before a game, and he said it made him want to go out and win for him! Apparently when he presented to the Board for the coaching position there was no chance of anyone else getting the job. Must be a pretty impressive operator. I'm an Eagles fan by the way so just passing on objective information.

To me...with my limited footy
To me...with my limited footy knowledge, Freo has the list and the coach, game plan has base but the rest is still to be developed as the game is always changing, players being in form / synch atm is way off. Not the only team struggling to start there season though.
How many teams start slow and build form as the year progresses...I'd rather this than be Saint Kilda atm. Ross flying high...I remember the Kangaroos a few years back...Nek minute, while WC as another example last flag they won the start of the season was hit and miss also. Richmond and the Doggies both rose before dropping a year to then go onto Flags. Melboune...well fk were did they come from.
yeah yeah...I know its freo...say what ya want..
We need a solid win this week against GC 100% before returning home against the Doggies...I'm sure once they get going it will be game on, Got some speed in there which is always dangerous when it links up..
Or then again...could be another Gap year...baaahaaa

ha ha...ya crack me up Bill.
Given were nearing the end of our 3rd dismal decade it only leaves 2024 to accomplish a premiership, so yeah a another gap decade isnt impossible..
We look at teams like the Cronulla Sharks as motivation...53 years before there first Flag..

I think you are a bit more
I think you are a bit more optimistic than I am about their list and coach and while I am a Collingwood supporter, I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Freo and really do want them to be succesful after what has been a bloody hard slog.... I really do think their list is mediocre at best. Hayden Young looks like he has the potential to be a really good player and they obviously have a couple of what I would consider "good" midfielders without been great or looking like they have the potential to be great.
Outside of that I think they have largely gone after out of favour role players from other clubs which now make up a decent portion of their best 22 (or regular 22). And the reason I think the coach is the issue is that as you have said, they have a bit of speed on the outside which can be dangerous when it links up, but they simply aren't using it. They also have some decent ball users by foot across their half back line, however they never take any risks with their kicking and just kick it laterally to each other in 30 metres of space and stat pad until the opposition is fully set-up behind the ball and then after they've kicked it backwards and sideways across the ground 5 or 6 times, they kick a high ball down the line to a 10 man contest. Nathan Wilson for example was a great attacking half-back at GWS that set up lots of forward half play and while that was some years ago now, he is still getting the ball enough in clear running room, but it just looks like all of the dare has been taken out of his game.... I suspect that can only be as a result of coaching as it is not just him and that same lack of a want to take the game on is apparent all across the ground....
Conversely, and obviously been a little one eyed given that I am a Collingwood supporter, you can see that every player is willing to take the game on at every opportunity and this doesn't appear to change at any point in the game regardless of how the game is balanced. Up by 10 goals, play this way. Down by 10 goals, play this way. Over time, the players adapt and that speed of ball movement becomes first nature and all of a sudden they can move the ball at lightening speed and cleanly on most occasions. There is obviously always the risk that when it doesn't come off you get burnt the other way, but it happens less and less the more confident the group get. This is evidently all driven by the coaching group!!
Frosty, as you have eluded to, the football IQ as the coach is one thing but if you can't sustain personal relationships with your playing group, you will inevitably struggle.... Really keen to see if Ross Lyon has changed his approach at all as I had some close mates playing at Freo under him who all agreed that similarly to Jarrad Schofield, his football IQ was off the charts, however only had a positive relationship with a handful of players. I think the head coach role is moving much more towards the binding glue of the group rather than the strategic masterminds which I think can comfortably exist in assistant roles.

Simpson had currency after
Simpson had currency after winning a flag but has failed to adapt to the rapid pace at which the game evolved and never seems to have a plan B or sends a tag to a players that is dominating us. Bringing in Schofield was a strategic move in planning for the future and I feel we’ll see an amicable parting of ways over the next two seasons much like how West Coast handled Worsfold’s departure with Schofield taking the reigns.

I know a fella that played with him during $ubi's dominance in mid-2000s and another that was ressies coach when Schoey was league coach. Both say his football IQ is off the charts and he is extremely good at creating relationships with players fro first year to veterens to get the best out of them. It did kinda help that $ubi had brown paper bags flying left, right and centre though.....

Gather round in Adelaide is
Gather round in Adelaide is a good idea I reckon...
Some coaches walk into a good list with flag potential....
Simpson was that guy, Sam Mitchell apparently played a very big role in that flag....
Freo doesn't have a forward line, when you've got fwds like a T Lynch and Jack or Jez and Hawkins or Tex and Fogarty etc etc then you have some confidence to get it in there fast...
They need games into Amiss before he gets the shits and fucks off also....

As ridiculous as the NicNat
As ridiculous as the NicNat suspension from a few seasons ago where he was suspended because he outweighed Amon by 30kg and "had a duty of care to exercise caution in the tackle".
Day's tackle had no deliberate second action and the player happened to land on his head and wasn't injured... not that I agree the injury outcome should determine a sanction and any sanctions should be weighed purely on the act alone.

Pies had to work for it specially with having to play against 2 teams, Bombers and umpires. At one stage free count was 16 to 7, makes one think the umps were paid to keep scores even and make a game of it

Yesterday's game was effectively a dead rubber in my tipping comp so I was happy to just watch a great game of footy. Daicos was unbeliveable. The belief in that team is quite amazing. I'm no Pies lover but that was a great comeback. I thought the Bombers played well but the Pies were just too good. Some questionable umpiring but that's the norm these days.

Wow the Pies keep amazing me and I'm usually no fan! I thought they really had some bad umpiring decisions in the last quarter and still managed to win. Umps missed a clear free in the goal square in the last couple of minutes. Cudos to Johnson for making sure they got that point to level it up. I've managed to go from 14th in the family tipping comp to third!

We need to make some tough decisions. What like giving up an emerging gun who can play forward or back or roll through the guts and a first round pick for a front running forward pocket that doesn't kick any goals.... sound familar Boon? Hawks basically gave up Ryan Burton and Xavier Duursma for Chad Wingard. Maybe we should bring in a free agent on a 4 year deal like the bruise free footy specialist Amon?
All that injury carnage and we're 0.8% below the might Hawks so if we're that fucked, what are you guys?

Decisions
They should have made the hard decisions 3 years back before selling the shop and buying Tim Kelly, though he is the only one showing any resolve and trying to win a game for the team and not for self preservation when another coach is brought in to replace Simpson like most of the rest.
Nic Nat is only there because of his contract owing and no other side willing to take him and ease the salary cap pressure

I don't think I'm quick to
I don't think I'm quick to jump on a bandwagon but WC really need to do a cleanout. I know a lot of the hierarchy at the club and feel they are just protecting each other. Classic case of jobs for the boys. Sad to have to cut champions of the club but that's what it has got to.
Someone who has been involved in footy at other AFL clubs said to me today that a former WC champ and assistant coach pointed out that WC and the Pies played off in 2018 and look where the two clubs are now. Time to change things or the results will stay the same.

All these geniuses like
All these geniuses like Damien Barrett with crystal balls and perfect 20/20 hindsight.
At the end of the day West Coast rolled the dice and sold the farm on trying to get another flag out of the current and recently retired group. We also lost 3 first rounders in Venables and Shepperd through concussion and Brander through poor drafting/poor development.
Yes tough decisions could have been made but when you are in a flag window you need to have a crack as it doesn't come around all that often. It didn't pay off, we take our licks and do the hard yards to get back and already started the process last year by splitting pick 2 and picking up Ginbey and Hewett rather than picking Wardlaw. I won't be surprised if we finish last and take 3 first round picks including two top 10 picks for this Harley Reid kid. We have Gaff, Gov, NicNat, Shuey, Yeo, Kelly and Hurn all coming out off big money contracts in the next two season and will then be able to hard at a free agent or two (Tim English and Naughton come to mind) in 2024 and 2025 costing us nothing but salary cap space.

Talking about hard decisions
Talking about tough decisions and smart list management Boon, let’s forget about the Wingard disaster and focus on the Karl Amon 4 year free agency deal. Amon is turn 28 years old and has played 124 games including 7 this year and Andrew Gaff has also played 7 this year so let’s compare their total stats for the season:
