Alcohol/drugs whilst in command of a boat
Submitted by meglodon on Mon, 2020-04-13 23:54
Page 14 of todays West Australian news paper has a half page story of a tragedy that occurred in the Mandurah estuary a short while back which resulted in a person loosing his life when the boat was in collided with a marker in the early morning.
This story is a good example of why drinking alcohol or taking drugs is not a good idea whilst on the water and gives the water police a very good reason to haul you over and give you a breath test if they thing you have been drinking. By the way I drink but not when in command of a boat.

Its also a really good story
Its also a really good story about speed and night time cruising, not paying attention. Don't get me wrong but there is more to that crash than just alcohol. Media pushing another agenda again

Yes there will be a route
Yes there will be a route cause and a number of contributing factors with alcohol or drugs being just 1 of those factors.

Out on the water is definitely no place to get smashed . Unfortunately there are some that don't think that way . I don't allow alcohol on my boat at all.

I'm also sure if heard about an unsecured firearm too. Why do you need that on a boat.

I don't have an issue with a few beers on the boat.
Some people can handle their booze.
This was Mandurah though so could've been a bag of meth and a bottle of JD.

Booze, drugs and a gun.
I think the recommendation is that drug deals at night time are dangerous and should be prohibited.

The story that I read afew
The story that I read afew weeks after the incident didn't make alot of sense, I heard that they were at the pub drinking then decided to take the boat out. The gun added to the story actually makes it start to make more sense I guess we will never know
rather be fishing

Zero Alcohol on boats
I believe there should be zero alcohol on boats. In my 30+ years in marine rescue i have seen to many incidents that could have been avoided if alcohol was not involved. One I recall many years ago was a vessel towed back at night. All 3 ocupants had a belly full and we could smell it as we approached the vessel. When we got them back to the marina they proceeded to retreive the vessel and drive home. Did not get far as had already called police just incase and they were caught as they left the car park onto the main road.
I had zero alcohol on my boat with no complaints.
Mother nature has a habit of biting in the but and the worst possible time and being affected by alcohol does not help.
I know many will disagree with me but that's my 2 cents worth.

Totally agree! Mine has always been a dry boat until back on shore and boat on trailer, then the beers are cracked. Especially up north if things go pear shaped I want my wits about me.

What's the percentage where
What's the percentage where excess alcohol was involved though? There is always an extreme example but you can cherry pick that from any accident if you are looking for it.
The vast majority of skippers out there do the right thing.

I don't have a boat
I don't have a boat currently but when I did, I used to take 2 beers as skipper. I would crack one if I got a really good fish and maybe the other one if I felt like it on a long day. Same rule for crew. No one ever had too many and no stupid mistakes were made. Seemed a reasonable compromise that worked for us.

Beers
Took 2 each for skipper and decky, one for when having a break during day and one for drive back to the ramp.
When pro fishing up north we used to do anything up to 14 day trips, ration was 4 per man a day but none to be opened till we were on anchor with boat cleaned, tomorrows bait our ready and all catch in the freezer.
Was a couple of deckies used to like a choof, you have one before starting work then pack your gear because you were on the next bus south when we got in regardless of how good you were.

Beer and fishing
Is good if you can handle it, If you can't....don't fuck it up for everyone else. Most of us are quite capable of operating a vessel with a couple of beers under our belt. If you can't....well stay off the waterways....If you try and stop me having an icy cold one after a great battle with a good fish....you can go fuck yourself. We don't want an alcohol ban on boats, it's just Un-Australian.

Breath testing
Like Dodgy and Iceman, I have had many years involvement with sea rescue and have seen some things that would turn most people off drinking for life, in moderation , yes , okay, but you are not the ones who have to pick up the pieces when things go pear shaped because someone doesn't know their limit and capabilities when pissed.
But those others who go overboard and drink too much spoil it for the rest of the boating fraternity will be the reason why breath testing will , and I hope it does, become law in WA

Fuck not this chestnut again.
Everyone that wants a dry boat good luck to you and I wish you good fishing.(Without me!) Bit like a vegan pledging that everyone else cant eat meat. People that get shitfaced and hit pylons in the dark don’t represent the silent majority that go about their boating without issue. Having had a family shack at Mandurah for 70 plus years, I’ve been going for 46 years I can reassure that the drug issue down there is real. We are on the Estuary front down near the Serpentine Murray Mouth. Never a dull moment after midnight on a full moon.

Few beers in the esky every fishing trip here, as long as you know your limit and can hold your piss, but like everything always a few clowns to wreck it for everyone, and it won't be long until an enforced BAC on boats

no alcohol on my boat , stopped it back in the late 90s after a mate overdid his drinking while 7 mile out night fishing for snapper at nanga in a 3.9 tinnie ... fog came in out of nowhere and he was semi plastered ,up front ........ drove the point home to me sharply ......he was a total liability half pissed , no help to me at all and nealry went in over the side trying to land a good snapper , which i lost when he put the gaff through the line missing the snapper ...
however that quickly became the least of my concern as we headed back in to shore in dark with heavy fog all around us
luck was on our side and we had two near misses from other speeding boats coming out of fog at top speed nearly hitting us and bow washing us badly ....but we got in to beach with no incident occuring
lucky we did not get hit ,
lucky he did not fall in
lucky it was dead calm no wind
lucky we where in the gulf not open ocean
lucky we had plenty of fuel and i was sober as to find our way in with no gps back then onboard
however it could all so easily have gone guts up and one or both of us drowned or died .he would not have been able to swim or even get back in the boat if we had of gone into the water ....might have drowned me trying to help/save him
and i can say it is not easy trying to stop or control a mate onboard from having more beers once they have hit the tipping point and they decide they want more ... its hard enough on land , very shitty in a boat between mates when one wont stop drinking .. .needless to say it was a wake up call for me and me and that mate had a slow parting of the ways after that
just think of anytime you have been to a social gathering when one bloke has had too much and plays up doing dumb shite , then mentaly put him on your boat out wide at night etc ..
so i sure get the dry boat ,thats my rule , one experience of it was enough to change my mind for good

Totally agree
Totally agree with no alcohol while fishing but if deckies want a can or two on the way home all good, been up to Exxie and had to drive others home from Tantabiddi because they were too pissed to drive as local coppers were checking speed limits and stopping people at the base for a breath test and also seen others totally useless when cleaning and filleting after a big day in the water or should say on the piss and as for people who say it doesn't effect them they're looking through goggles eyes.

Lets face it its too close to Rocko not to have a major Meth problem!!
Yo Merman where do you hang nowadays if Fishwrecked is not cool enough for you now?
