Alko Sensa Brake Controller
Submitted by Subaquatic on Mon, 2016-01-18 11:00
I have an Alko Sensa Brake Unit on the trailer, and need to install a new controller on another vehicle.
I would like to go for an inertia style controller, rather than a brake pedal sensor.
Has anyone successfully done the conversion using a Redarc Tow Pro or similar controller?

don't think there is a conversion
for it. everything i have seen and read states that the sensa brake controller must be used and that the others such as redarc and voyager etc etc are not compatioble.
but i will be watching this space as i have the two different controllers in my vehicle. one for the boat and one for the camper. would be so much easier with just the one.

I have a Tekonsha-P3. Towed a 1.6tonne camper into steep point last year with no problems.
Great on gravel roads with the adjustable "on the fly" capability.
Has lots of adjustment for different load weights.

I use a P3 as well. It has a few memory setings, so you can have one loaded with the "tunings" for the boat, one for the camper,...

I replaced my Alko Sensa Brake
with a Tekonsha P3. The sensa-brake was beyond repair. Nice and easy to install yourself and very happy.

OK
Total novice with this, and hope not stealing the post. Have a 200S Cruiser towing a 5.4m tinny. Just have normal hydrolic brakes. When and for what would you go with these options. Never had an issue but as mentioned don't know anything.
But also always trying to be as safe as possible.

Any trailer over 2000kg
Any trailer over 2000kg needs breakaway brakes which is either electrical brakes or electrical over hydraulic/air

Over 2000kg you need brakes
Over 2000kg you need brakes on all 4 wheels of the trailer and the brakes need to be operated from within the cab of the tow vehicle. So you need an electronic controller in the car which controls the trailer brakes.
750 kgs to 2000kg you can use override brakes on the front axle only. Override brakes are the ones that come on whenever the trailer pushes forwards on the hitch.
Under 750 kgs you don't need trailer brakes.

Thanks guys
was aware you needed brakes but wasn't aware of the >2000kg issue. Lucky my old traily is well under that, but have hydraulic override brakes added as it came with one axle and no brakes, so changed that to twins with brakes.

Sorry, yes Tekonsha controller then Hydrastar hydraulics.
I too wanted to keep the Sensa system on the trailer but it was the bit that was stuffed and too expensive to repair (and then there were the numerous online reports about it not being so good). Glad I bit the bullet and replav=ced the whole lot. Never looked back.
