Works Well.

Tue, 2010-09-07 21:48

My home made one works a treat, made out of stainless bar, triangle shape with a bit of tubing that can slide up to allow the rope to go through.

One thing that I had trouble with untill I woke up was the lenght of chain has  to weigh more than the anchor or else sometimes it slides back down to the bottom.

Have used mine in depths from10 metres right through to 130 metres with out any hassles.

Well I just bought one and have try it twice both times did not pull the anchor out..We had to free the anchor by hand then drive away to get the anchor up.The float im using is not big enough to hold the anchor so Ill try a boat fender next time out .

Works a charm

Wed, 2010-09-08 06:58

Well worth it.  I spliced mine onto a 25L rectangle drum with about 1 foot of rope.

I've got a Sarca and about 7m of chain.  An inflatable bag would be good as storage of the big drum is a hassle.

Cheers Pete

I use one as well and it

I use one as well and it works a charm.  I think a 10L drum is large enough.

another tick of approval

another tick of approval from me. Apart from the storage of the float (we just hung ours off the bow rail) they work really well.

Wed, 2010-09-08 08:03

Im concerned about getting my anchor stuck all the time, thankfully when it has been stuck i can move around enough to pull it out.

However my anchor is pretty big n heavy so a big float would be needed!

Pulling a anchor in on the suface beats dragging her up from the depths. Dont have a winch or even a anchor slave (its me, the Mrs wont go up the front).

I just pull the rope up to the back, tie it on to the cleat, slip on the float and drive off. Havent been caught by a very stuck anchor yet, but mostly use soft reef anchors.

Then its just a matter uf pulling up the rope. Piece of pie.

same unit

Wed, 2010-09-08 12:17

I bought my Deckie one of the same units for anchor retrieval and found it works great, we have anchored in  80 mts plus up north and returned easily,   The float does have to handle the chain and anchor weight and we havent had any problems or complaints from me , i also use a five pronged grapel hook for all areas rather than longer prong reef anchor

Give it a try Bodie, got

Give it a try Bodie, got nothing to lose. Cut back to a shorter chain maybe ?? yours would be the close link stuff to suit a winch i spose? Boats are about the same size and a #3 carca and 8 metres has held ours in some seriously nasty conditions ( 25 knots plus)

Wed, 2010-09-08 18:05

I have a large fender float which I will try first as it can be stored neatly on the boat ,I think my anchor is a little heavy as well may need to get a large grapple anchor for diving ,had one on the trailcraft great anchor .

Grapple

Wed, 2010-09-08 19:16

Go the grapple Paul, will serve you well in most cases & much stronger than the normal pick plus easy to retreive with the float system. It gets a little much pullin it up from 60+ metres.  Rob
