Anyone remember the Korean Star?

Here's some photos taken a couple of days after she ran aground. Shows you the power of the ocean the way the hull is peeled back like a tin

Some local Carnarvonites were in the stern try to salvage stuff and there was still smoke pouring out of the wreckage! It was a bit hairy climbing up that ladder thats for sure!

Remember that very well. My mates were up there not long after that (I was in England at the time). And they had some good pics of it too. The next days the boys were at the boundry fishing and were hit by a king wave. One was lucky not to have been killed and nearly lost his ear after getting it sliced on the oysters on the rocks. Feel I was lucky to have missed that trip. They reckon the rocks they were standing on were as dry as a bone.

my mate Bob Ward from Carnarvon actually got a rope on to it and claimed salvage rights according to Wardy the SASR boys got on board not long after it ran aground and blew up the radio room, Wardy himself got all all the fuel and oil pumped of it and made a killing ( but this all according to Wardy)

Radios

Sat, 2013-08-17 21:39

There was even bigger radios already in Carnarvon in one of the fishing company workshops .

The reason I got on why it was blown up is that it was to stabilise the two halves and make them safe because the public was just about crawling all over it.

One of its lifeboats is still in use here in town

Salvage

Sat, 2013-08-17 18:58

They built the road down the hill , set up a big flying fox and cut it in to movable sections and carted it away as scrap.
I first saw it about a fortnight after it came ashore and the army boys had blasted the bottom out of it to settle it and stop it moving about.
All that's left now are some steel plates on the shore where they have washed up after a cyclone.

I remember when that happened

Sun, 2013-08-18 10:59

I remember when that happened too. Was still living in Carnarvon at the time. Went down to have a look a couple of weeks later and security had it all blocked off.
I actually jumped in for a look a couple of years ago and there is still huge chunks of it lying on the bottom. Awesome fish life around it butt lots of sharks as well.

. Mate off mine on the rocks in Marc Russo's first pick got physically dragged into the water after forgetting to loosen his drag. Luckily he got to shore and kept his rig as the line parted. Needed some emergency bush "stitches".

 Ahh. Camp Rock..

One of my all time favourite night fishing spots!!!

i remember when Wardie and my uncle Simmo were doing the salvage from this just after it happened.

i was only a young fella, still fishing up that way, and couldn't believe the guys diving around the wreck with monster whalers cruising around!

I've dived there and we got a few crays from inside the wreckage. Speared a couple of fish and hopped out before the taxmen arrived. Diving the wreck was eerie and you expected a shark to come screaming out of every hole and around every corner but I think that is a result of watching too many cartoons as a kid. Bonefish are found on the sand to the north and the caves out 50 metres or so  hold plenty of cod too.
