Yeah mate I went out a week ago off Rocko about 20 mile out and sounded around a few cray pots out there. Found some interesting ground and picked up 2 baldies around 600mm each and a good size black arse. I was praying for my first Dhuie but it wasn't to be. Had great fun though.
Sweet mate, Have you ever tried the 5 fathom bank to get your dhuey heard of heaps dhu fish stories from out there. Do you ever fish any of the beaches in Rockingham???
Yes I have tried the 5 fathom bank a number of times and I was quite surprised at how well it fishes sometimes. I've been living in Karratha for the last 8 years so I was spoilt when it came to the quality of fishing. I was feeling a bit down moving back to Mandurah as I thought there's no way the fishing will be any good as it was probably fished out. When I first moved back to Mandurah I put my boat in and headed to 5 fathom and the action was on pretty much straight away. We pulled 8 thumping King George, a couple of nice black arse, a 600mm flathead and undersized dhuie which went straight back no worries. In amongst all of that we were getting smoked by XOS sambos which kept us entertained for hours.
In regards to dhuies at 5 fathom I've only ever caught 2 undersized ones there however I do believe there are sized ones there...You just need to find them and entice them to take the bait. As notorious said it would have been bloody good fishing there 30 years ago for dhuies.
No I don't do much beach fishing around Rocko. When I was a kid I fished Singleton beach plenty of times and most times came back with a feed of herring, whiting or tailor.
My father-in-law got a sized one on bait there about 4 years ago and I jigged one up last year (during the ban of course) and those are the only legal ones from my boat out of maybe 100 trips there...off Mandurah, that is. I will say that we've had a lot of success on just about all the other important angling species SW WA has to offer there...especially snapper, kgs, blackass and sambos...berley, baits with little or no weight, and jigs/soft plastics have been the key...and fish as light as you can, even bream gear! 50 pound bottom bashers with paternosters and great lumps of lead are good for snags and wrasse there, and little else!
