Blue Eye Tevalla - yesterday's Super Deep fish!!!
With a short break from filming commitments and having done plenty of snapper tagging already I was keen to go for a Super Deep fish espeicially with the nice forecast yesterday!
Blake my shop manager was keen to get out and so was his mate Dan. Blakes done plenty of the Super deep with great success but Dans done a few trips out there in his own boat and is the expert green eye slayer ha ha
Blake said Dan would be wrapped to get out on your boat and something we have spoken about ages ago!
I've got plenty of Super Deep fish in the freezer so I said to the boys I will skipper and you guys get some fish for the freezer!
The plans gentlemans hour launch and we didnt get out there until after lunch. I dont like going back to the same spots all the time so I mix it up (farm my spots)!!
The first few spots were sounder quiet and If I dont see fish I dont drop as its a waist of time. After burning up many hours on the search at some old spots I just had to visit one more spot that I hadnt fished for ages!
After sounding around I found a dense school sitting higher up the water column and Blake said Blue Eye your reckon........ I said yep. Ironically I mainly get bass/hapuku and greyband at that spot but theres always suprises out there!
Dan baits up, drops down and whamo he's on. This fish or fishes is going really hard and puts up a great fight in 300m of water (all manual wind up). I said leave the hooked fish down for a double header and that he did!
Dan was wrapped his " First Super Deep fish" and a quality double header of Blue Eye Trevalla at that!
Dan looses his green eye slayer status ha ha
Dans into the Corona's after that and was loving the Super Deep =)
Blakes next, does a drop hooks a solid fish also ......he waits for the double mmhhh nope not going to happen so up it came (manual wind up)
Blakes lands a solid Blue Eye Trevalla but no wonder he didnt get a chance for a double as the greedy fish eats both baits ha ha
Blake saying you drop Ryan.....nah all good mate you drop one bait down and lets get you your bag and cruise on in!
Blake gets another Blue Eye Trevalla and off we went!
A great day on the water, great conditions, good company and good to see an old spot fire up!

Ron, I had a quick drop of my jig right at the end of the day but no touches........next trip out will be for me =)
Cransy the half day went so quick especially doing recon on old spots and yes when you find the fish and drop on their head you can bag out quickly!

Many thanks to Ryan for the day out on the water. Not to many bosses are willing to pull you out of the shop and take you fishing for the day! I know Dan was stoked with a double header as his first successfull taste of Super Deep fishing. Plenty of yummy fillet come off those bad boys
Ryan had plenty of opportunity to drop but was keen to get us onto fish and shoot back in. Not too many skippers would as you mentioned Ron.
I know Dan was very impressed with Ryan's knowledge and fish finding ability as was I, Even when the first few hours were quiet. Thats when the sometimes excessive time and experience on the water comes into play (Sorry Ryan you fish far more than anyone I know haha). Im looking forward to getting back out there in the Super Deep stuff again whether it be before or after the demersal ban.
All in all it was a top day out with an awesome skipper and mate.
Cheers Blake

One question, you said the fish were higher up in the water column? How far off thew bottom would blue eye's typically sit?

Super Deep!
Thanks mate .......the Super deep rig isnt re-inventing the wheel but has served me well for many many years of Super deep fishing in the last 4 years!
Bluetonic, I had a late night so I didnt get time to elaborate. The Oceanside Custom Super deep rig in more detail;
Over the years I tried a few different variations and this is what I use when dropping baits!
Basically its made of quality components, heavy duty hardware, two droppers with circle hooks, long lumo sleeves to enhance the bait in the dark depths and the lumo sleeves also help with teeth abrasion resistence!
Mike & Blake make them up to my specs and customers like the convenience to just grab them off the shelf to buy (dont loose to many) or some customers buy one and get all the components and make their own!
Cheers!

Super Deep!
Johnny I must admit that after doing the Super Deep for so many years you loose some (only some) of that initial buzz. When I get my deckys quality Super Deep fish and I see the buzz from them that puts everthing into perspective & fires me up =)
Walfootrot, if your around that way pop in and say hello.......the rigs are on display and plenty more to see!
Colin its good to see your still visiting us....... how are ya mate? As for the rig yes its heavy duty which is paramount when you are fighting big fish and double headers (especially if they are big Bass groper). You dont want them to fight hard against each other and scissor snap your rig and loose a biggen ( has happened )
Thanks to the many other comments

Yup Great Thanks Ryan!
Yup great thanks Ryan! Thanks for asking :)
Been quiet on all forums for a long time mate due to starting my own computing business and doing two jobs. Now, thankfully in a position with my business to flick my previous day job (which I increasingly hated anyway - the BS metter was off the scale ;-) ) - currently on hols and will look at ramping up the already steady business when I return.
And yes! I could well understand mate that loosing a fish at that depth would be a GREATR dissapointment :).
