BOAT COLLAR.

Hi all. Thought I would share this with fellow FW members, especially tinny owners. A few months ago I came across the website for Kaptens boat collar in Queensland. After checking into it I forked out the cash and ordered one for my 4.2 mtr stacer. Once I got my head around the fact that I had to drill a shitload of holes in a perfectly good hull, I got to work and fitted it. The finished result isn't pretty but after three trips out in it I am amazed at what it has done for my boat. The first big plus is that it provides level floatation when fully swamped, also it remains stable when swamped as the flotation is well outside the centreline of the boat. ( haven't tested this yet :)
The fist thing that I did noticed was getting up on the plane, the collar acts as a huge chine and it takes half the power and speed to get it up and going. The next thing was how dry I was, I estimate it cuts out 90% of spray, even with wind chop side on. The ride is now incredibly smooth and I use much less power to do the same speeds. The most amazing thing was coming back in with a following swell and not have to worry about broaching or nose diving down the face of a wave, this thing just tracked arrow straight and the faster I went the better it performed. So far I am more than impressed with it, the only thing I have a slight concern over is its longevity as it is basically marine grade foam however I have contacted owners who have had one fitted for 3 years and it is still going well so fingers crossed. I've planned a trip to Kalbarri in a few weeks so that should test it out.

cheers.

It's a good idea...

...just wondering how it would go rubbing up against jetties and stuff, if it's made out of foam? Also, would the boat's beam (on a larger boat) be widened beyond the 2.5m oversize towing limit?

Can certainly see the benefits of turning smaller vessels into safer, drier ones for offshore applications!

painted it with solar guard

painted it with solar guard as recommended by the manufacturer, The collar has a hard outer layer to protect it from jetties etc. however you still have to be careful.. I haven't looked into the width, but for tinnies I don't think it would be a prob.

Good Stuff

I've also got a Boat Collar but haven't put it on yet, a bit slack. The collar is supposed to have a life of 30 years which would see out most tinnies I suppose. Pat is a top bloke to deal with too.

Good to see you got it finished and your happy with the results.
Must admit would be a bit apprehensive about so many holes in the hull.
Looks like it turned out well though.
Good job.

How's it go getting on and off the trailer?  Does the collar get in the way of the rollers or anything?

I think id be concerned that

I think id be concerned that the forces through the collar would cause metal fatigue around those bolts. the design looks like it will cause leverage through the bolt causing deflections at the base of the bolt head.
