Cape Cuvier trip

Went for a trip with a mate to deliver an inspector to a bulk carrier anchored at Cape Cuvier yesterday.

While the inspector was on board we dropped a line over the side to pass the time. No bait on board so it was on with a trusty chrome slice and down to the bottom for a bit of jigging , no more than a minute later and up comes a dreaded NW blowie, lethal to eat but top bait. Off with the sides and down goes a couple of bottom rigs and a makeshift floater out the back in the hope of a mackie or tuna. Ian looked happy while pulling his fish in but the grin disappeared as soon as he saw what it was.

We were not able to drop a lure in on the run up and back due to time constraints but that will change next time out.

Pics show the cape as we arrived,  Ian and his blowie, looking back towards the cliffs and a magic sunset on the way home.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

They are a magic bait, just skin it and cut it in to chunks.

Dam bolt cutters

Fri, 2011-12-09 20:29

flicked a sqid jig at the back of FFB early today, jig got taken by something that I thought was the biggest squid or cuttlefish I had ever encounted. After a couple of minutes taking it easy (4kg line) what surfaces along side the boat but a bloody great NW blowie, never caught one on a squid jig before, just about to net it and suddenly it took of.

Hmmm pulled in the jig and found the bottom two rows of spikes missing. The bloody bolt cutter had bitten through a 23 dollar squid jig. not happy Jan.

I hope this is not something that is going to become common around the metro area, last thing I want to see is NW blowies taking up residence down this part of the coast (Mandurah)
