Good work young fella. We had a go on Anzac Day heaps of small skippy about and only a few Herring amongst them. The old Herring didn't stand a chance. Kids loved watching them coming up and devouring the burley right behind the boat.

Heaps of herring in the Cut
I was there friday they are there in plague proportions at the moment I use lures targeting them.
Keep in mind I have land a couple herring around the 35cm mark recently and your drag must be set appropriatly for these models will take drag and will snap leader if not set correctly.

U can get maggots from most
U can get maggots from most tackle stores, by far my favourite bait for herring. Also with the maggots ur in for a chance in catching some nice garfish, which make great tailor bait. I agree with lowza, play around with the drag a bit until u feel comfortable with it, sometimes if its too tight even much smaller herring can snap the line. Went saturday after work to woodies, had some chasing after my popper but unfortunately a dolphin turned up and scared them away.

Cut
I was at the cut on friday, head right at the carpark go out to the jetty, give you extra distance and they were everywhere would have 30+ hits kept 1/2 a dozen for mulloway bait, they were also liking the placcies.

Whiting,Skippy
For skippy I run a sardine on a triple of size 4 kirbys with a light bean sinker trawled at pace.
For Whiting run a blood worm on a size 6 long shank.

Maggots
I havent seen maggots in any tackle shops for about 9 years, unless you're talking about the dead ones.
Where can you buy live maggots from ?
Or have the tackle shops started selling the live maggots once again ?

Wogs
Another option that I have used for gardies and herring is the gulp (I think) placcy maggots. They look like wogs and have the stimulate built in. Also they last ages. Initially it looks expensive, but last ages.
Maggots dont realy have a smell that attract fish, its the appearance because they breed in weed beds, then get washed in by the surf. So the placcy models work very well IMO.
Try that.
