Deck Flooring Options
Submitted by Belly Fish on Sun, 2018-11-25 21:14
Hi all,
My boat is 15 years old now, and whilst he carpet on the floor has served me well, it's tired now and needs replacing.
I see there are some very nice options now...Seadek, Deck Armour etc.
I'm like most of us and use my boat hard...fishing, craying, abalone....gets a bit of a beating.
Am I better off sticking with marine carpet, or are these synthetic decks a good option for taking the knocks?
Does anyone has first hand experience with any of these types of products?
Comments or recommendations?
Cheers

Just did the same exercise.
Just did the same exercise. Unless you opt for an eBay job, the carpet alternatives are quite expensive so I opted for carpet. $300 my boat is done as opposed to nearly $1k for a hardy yet soft foam like product.

SeaDek and Deck Armour look
SeaDek and Deck Armour look great but as mentioned they are very expensive. Was quoted around $4k for my 21' boat so unfortunately that got ruled out pretty quick.

Tubular PVC matting is
Tubular PVC matting is pretty nice on the feet and can be removed easily to wash out congealed blood etc. There is a solid version, but to me it feels like riding a push bike without shoes on. Neither looks any where near as good as the EVA teak look stuff, but I haven't been near it.

I've had SeaDek for a year
I've had SeaDek for a year now. You are welcome to come and see it (Kingsley) if you like.
It looks great, doesn't get too hot and washes off with ease. I've had a squid dump ink on it and just quick a spray with the deckwash got it off. It doesn't stink like carpet, and hooks don't get stuck in it. Any damage to it (dropped knives) doesn't spread. It's nice underfoot, very lightly spongy.

maybe not a good option for craypots?
I don't know if your craying involves using pots, but I don't think the seadeck type stick ons, at least the foam type, would take a black oxided steel bottom pot too well. Regardless of what type of deck I have, I always have a loose piece of carpet when I'm potting, just for that. Personally, I've just stuck with the standard non-skid surface on the Reefrunner for now, actually scrubs up quite easily with a long handled scrubber bought from Bunnings for cleaning decking. Any persistant stains get a light application of Domestos and hose off. I may go to Octogrip or similar later .

I would just go the carpet
I would just go the carpet price wise. If you got 15 years out of the last lot. I have found carpet is ok temp wise too . I like to fish bare feet and doesnt get hot under foot. Depends on weather its ally or glass i spose

Sea deck
I have sea deck and yes it is nice on the feet doesn't get hot but if you drop a knife on it it will damage it.
I have quite a few dark stains on it as we fish Gnaraloo and the boat gets left on the mooring for 10 days, I have tried scrubbing and cleaning it with ct18 truck wash with no joy.
