Replacing Boat Trailer Bearings Problem
Submitted by Simo_ on Sun, 2018-12-09 15:18
Just after some advice, I am re-doing my bearings at the moment and it was really hard to get the hub off. The back bear didnt come off with the hub and took some hitting with a punch and hammer to remove, the rear one was really tight. Last time I did them it came straight off, the only thing I can think off is I had the axle galvenised when I did a refurb on trailer last year. The part that the hub goes on was then machined back.
Just wondering what I should do? how tight should the bearings be on the axle?

They normally come off with the hub
You are really relying on thr rear seal to pull them off, as due to being a taper, the hub can come off and leave the bearing there with little effort. I have had them need to be gotten off separately, and i've been doing them regularly on different axles for a long time. One thing to consider--as they are a very neat slip fit, hitting them with a punch means you are hitting them on one side, and it can cause them to "cock", and jam. I've actually used a 3-jaw puller to shift one, once--didn't take much effort using that, as you are applying equal force right around the circumference, but any other approach wouldn't shift it.
The bearings just need to be a neat slip fit on the axle--it's the cones fitted into the hub you don't want moving.

They should just slip on
They should just slip on Simo with a smear of grease. You maybe had some salt water ingress, I'd get some fine wet and dry and give it a clean.
