Devastation

Watching the news and trying to understand how 65+ people can be killed and 700+ houses can be destroyed by bushfires.

Just can't imagine a 40m high firestorm roaring down on your house and you trying to save it with a roof sprinkler system and your 18mm garden hose.

Fires moving so quick that they can't be outrun in your car when you decide to bolt or then finding fallen trees blocking the road.

Unbelievable, horrific ...

John

different reports

Sun, 2009-02-08 17:33

What confuses me is the differing body counts, one station its 35, next its 60, then its back to 50.  Don't really know what to believe, but the pictures of the leftovers shows that it was relatively unbelievable and theres people out there re-lighting them, what a disgrace.  Hope theres some decent rain to give them a reprieve.

Terrible and Concerned

Sun, 2009-02-08 19:52

Absolutely terrible - more than 70 fatalities now and a couple of whole towns virtually wiped out. Hard to put into words and feelings. Even those that have survived have had their possessions and everything they've worked for gutted from them.

Sandra's Sister/hubby and two kids moved from near Kaligny only recently to Trafalgar - so we were very concerned.

My deepest thoughts and cares go out to those that have so tragically lost their life, to those that have lost loved ones and to each and every one that has sufferred.

Donations?

Sun, 2009-02-08 21:03

I couldn't sit by and watch all the heartache and suffering of the people involved in it and thought I had to do my bit to help the poor souls... insurance might cover the house and possessions but the immediate needs, the emotional stress and the comfort those people need must be insane.  The Red Cross is one of the organisations that is reaching out and helping these people so I've logged on and made a $100 donation and want to encourage anyone else here who can afford it to do the same.

http://www.redcross.org.au/vic/services_emergencyservices_victorian-bushfires-appeal-2009.htm

Let's get on board and do our bit to help our fellow Australians firstly because they're our countrymen and secondly because when and if we find ourselves in the same position we would want people to do the same.

108 now, worst ever.....dig

Mon, 2009-02-09 05:30

108 now, worst ever.....dig deep people.

Called our friends last night who live in thick bush in the Dandenongs.  They have all 'unreplacables' down the mountain at their parents place this time of the year.  First sign of fire (30km away) its in the car an out - this is there dream home too.  If only all these people had that attitude.  One family they know lost their house but were fortunatley in Tassie at the time - houses can be rebuilt.

Our work usually matches staff donations, so yeah a couple of hundred will be coming from me.

Cheers Pete

Free Money

I think Ruddy should rethink the next stimulus package and divert a fair chunk of the funds into Victorian fire affected areas/relief fund. JMO.

Stimulus Package

Mon, 2009-02-09 16:06

Yep was only talking about that yesterday with some mates and we all agreed that Rudd should concentrate on helping the victims of the fires. The stimulus package money should be used to help the fire victims IMO.

Seperate Issues...

Mon, 2009-02-09 17:10

IMO this is what government is all about and what makes gutsy governments. A business decision has been made (and blocked temporarily by the Libs) to help deal with a disaster of a different kind.. No need to change that.

No matter where a disaster hits in our region we always seem to come up with the goods to support and I think the pressure is on Mr Rudd and all states to help out here regardless of whatever other promisses have been made. Rudd and his team are about the people and the working class. I would not expect them to take a back seat approach to this horrendous situation.

From what I have already seen the average person will donate to this cause in whatever way they can.

Cheers, Vince

I couldn't think of a great way to coordinate it with minimum hassle Mako.  You got any ideas?

Maybe we can start a running total through the post to encourage people to donate online?

Terrible

Mon, 2009-02-09 08:45

the count for the fires is now 108 as of this morning 9/2/09.  yes I to was in Melbourne when ash wednesday went through.  Coming home from work (lived in Cranbourne) and saw the mushroom cloud from the Cockatoo area and thought somebody is hurting.  Had the kids, dogs and cats in the house 1st hubbie stated wake me if it gets close but thank god it stopped 11 kilometers from where we lived.  The ash was falling everywhere and that northerly wind is terrible in Melbourne when it blows.  RIP my heart goes out to everybody that has lost everything, lost their lives terrible tragdey.

Terrible

Mon, 2009-02-09 09:12

I lived in Canberra when the fires tore that place up and I thought we would not see anything like it again.  I cannot believe what has happened in Melbourne, it is total devastation of so many lives.  I was in Melbs for the weekend and sat by and watched in shock as places burnt.  You just wish you could help somehow, you know cook food for the firies, volunteer your time for some thing.  I guess all us back in WA can do is dig deep in our pockets and hand over the cash.  We cannot bring back people's loved ones or their worldly possessions but a bit of cash will help service providers give these people a helping hand.

The Canberra community rallied around after the fires and I am sure the Victorians will do the same.  On the other hand I hope the find the bastards that lit those fires and set them lose in the middle of a community that has lost everything.  THe pricks deserved to be beaten to within an inch of their lives.

I have just donated $100 to the cause.  Let's hope everyone else here can donate whatever they can afford.

Frightening

Mon, 2009-02-09 09:33

I have been involved in quite a number of fire situations. Cyclone Tracey I think it was caused all sorts of problems in the SW and we spent a couple of weeks working on that in very dangerous and unpredicatable conditions. That was frightening and in no way as horrendous as what the Victorians have endured in the last week or so. My best wishes go ot to everyone involved and my symapathy to all families who have suffered losses.

Cheers, Vince

If you make a donation add it to the running total, let's see if we can get $1,000 at least hey?! Every dollar helps, even $5 would buy someone a meal, blanket or teddy.
