Divers can still access the Rotto Trench

Environment Minister Tony Burke says divers can still access parts of a massive underwater canyon off the coast of Fremantle after a world-first network of marine reserves is established.

Mr Burke today told Federal Parliament that two of the three heads of the Perth Canyon, also known as Rottnest Trench, would remain open for recreational use while one head would become a marine national park.

Perth Canyon is a submarine canyon located about 22km west of Rottnest Island and is bigger than the Grand Canyon in the United States.

Mr Burke, who last week unveiled a plan to create 44 marine parks, tabled an article in parliament featuring opposition deputy leader Julie Bishop calling on the Government to create larger marine sanctuaries.

The new marine reserves, which will cover 3.1 million square kilometres or a third of all Australian waters, will limit fishing and some oil and gas exploration.

Liberal MP Natasha Griggs asked Mr Burke if, following the banning of commercial, recreational and tourist charter fishing boats in some areas of northern Australia, the Government would increase surveillance in Australia's northern waters.

Mr Burke responded by saying it was unlikely fishers in tinnies would get far enough to make a difference to Australia's security.

"If you get in the average tinnie and you reach that area 680 kilometres away, you probably don't have enough petrol to get back," he said.

Mr Burke said there was a management obligation that came with national parks.

"You have opportunities in these areas to be able to use a range of different initiatives," he said.

What a joke - Just goes to show Tony Burke has no idea what he is talking about.

I'm happy to take him out for a dive there, though I may remain topside. As we should follow good buddy protocol, I will pair him up with someone from PEW so they can look at all the pretty fish life they'll be saving.

That really is showing the level of stupidity from this government.

Sad part is many people will match there wit with "that's great news that if they want to dive in the trench they will be allowed too".

Gotta be a mistake

Classic! But I wouldn't be surprised if that is a cock-up by the West rather than the minister. I had a quick google and couldn't find the basis for this one except for the one news article.

ULTRA RETARD

I reckon he doesnt even know what or where the actual trench is probably cant even point it out on the map. Any dumbass would know diving at those depths is impossible(bar a few crazy cats out there with highly specialised equipment and support).

As for the surveillance

Tue, 2012-06-19 18:42

in our northern waters, it's not the "fishers in tinnies" he should be concerned about, it's the illegal fishing done by foreign commercial fishing boats he needs to think of, surely? I'd call him a clown, except there's not much about this that's funny.

They have completely lost the plot

Wed, 2012-06-20 21:41

I believe it's important to remember like most Western countries  our democracy is based on secularism, the separation of the state from the church so that policy and direction is based on robust debate of FACTS not on faith, beliefs and idealism.

So we have government policy directed by green idealism not by the facts. The best evidence would suggest that we should be very proud of our fisheries management which has lead to a sustainable fishery, the envy of most nations. Instead our federal politicians act on pressure from non government loony groups and dodgy evidence spruiked by the conservation council among others.

This is why folk like Tony Burke seem happy to make complete fools of themselves.

I only hope that Australia wises up and never allows the Greens to hold this much power again.

I usually swim out from Fremantle to the trench when I dive. Maybe Tony can make it with me!

As humourous as it is this

Thu, 2012-06-21 06:24

As humourous as it is this is the level of understanding that these Knobhead pollies have.Unless you drop the facts on their actual doorstep they will have no F%^ckin idea about most proposals they get.Thats why the Greenies with thier computer savvie minions( not sure of the spelling) will always seem to have the majority. The everyday fisho ie 1 that fishes occasionly and probably not the one that reads fishing forums etc have no idea other than the offal they are forced to read in the West and other green orientated papers around the traps. I read 2 letters to the editor in the West both were pro marine parks yesterday and none against, when i know that myself and a couple of mates have written to the same paper for no result with a different view. No wonder Julia wants 3 seats on the Fairfax board , she knows that that is the way you get shit done. This GOVT we have at the moment needs to go and the Greens need to take a good look at themselves and asimilate with down to earth people or they will becme another extremist party with no credence at all.Maybe RECFISH WEST should obtain a seat on one of our papers. Rant over.
