Drowned my Stradic Ci4

As per the subject line, my Stradic 2500 Ci4 took an unplanned dip (dropped it from under my arm while getting the popper out of a whiting's gob...)on the weekend.

It went right under, and though I rescued it immediately, and when home an hour later, gave it a thorough rinsing under the shower, twice, it now has lost that lovely smoothness, replaced by a very sad grinding feeling. Normal routine after any fishing is to rinse my reels, let them air dry, wipe them down with a clean rag and then a light spray with Lanox and that has stood me in very good stead over many years. I've inadvertently got plenty of reels wet before, but never had this severe an effect so quickly.

My question is, what to do?

Strip it and re-grease, or don't muck around, just bang it off to Shimano for them to repair? Or... any other suggestions?

Reel Service

Wed, 2015-03-04 22:49

Shimano are 2 staff down in the service department and moving premises at the same time so expect delays. If you want it done quicker and at the same price we do it, send us a PM if you have more questions (happy to help)

Yep, I've had a couple of reels in the drink, straight to Oceanside for a clean and service.

Make your decision sooner

Make your decision sooner rather than later as it will get worse quickly.  Personally id DIY and go light on the grease and oil.

Check

Thu, 2015-03-05 00:21

Before you go for a full service check it's not just the roller bearing making the noise,

My roller bearing on a 2500Ci4 wore out after just a few months of limited use and started making all sorts of noises, I replaced it with the double roller bearing upgrade off ebay and it was better than new, quite possibly a design flaw or i just got unlucky but the ebay fix is cheap and easy.

If it seems more serious go see the lads at oceanside, never had a reel serviced by them and I don't usually spend much $$$ there but they've always been upfront and more than happy to help regardless of whether they're making a sale or not. The few staff I've dealt with over the years (Blake and another guy who i think left a few years ago (heavy set an shaved head)) have always been great along with the newer guys, they've never 'looked down' upon me (for shark fishing) or my partner with her silly questions about herring baits/rigs, unlike some of the other stores where a question about targeting herring is just met with a glare. When my big game reels are all due a service i'll be taking them them to oceanside, no idea if it'll be the cheapest option but i'm confident I'll get what I pay for with the job done right.

Cheers

Good offer by a site sponser

Or , strip it down quick and service it your self. High or medium quality reels " I use Stradics " are a bit more sensitive to corosion and what ever you do , you should do it fast so not to loose the reel.

The majority have it!

Righto, the message is clear, off to Oceanside it goes. ( Ryan, this is actually the reel I came and saw you about last week, or more specifically, was chasing the extra spool for, pre-drowning)

Drifta, wish it was only a roller bearing, but she's full coffee grinder style now. Will stop mucking around with it and get it done properly.

Grantarctic1, agree wholeheartedly mate, I have Sedona's and Tierra's 10+yrs old that have copped a very difficult working life from Geelong, to Darwin and finally to Perth still going very strong!! A bit of a dunk in the estuary wouldn't bother them! Ah well.

Thanks to all, timely and practical advice.

 +1 for Oceanside.

I dunked my 1000 Rarenium and rang them in a panic and got Josh (I think). He talked me through how to prevent the bearings from getting water damaged i.e. take it out of the bucket of fresh water and Inox it and let sit on cardboard for two days. After having just serviced my Symetre, I stripped it, cleaned and regreased it with Hot Sauce and it is running as good as new. I have the exact same reel on another rod and cannot tell which reel is which without looking for the red grease.

He could have just as easily said bring it in for a service which I was prepared to do on the spot but instead talked me through how to rescue it once he knew I was confident in stripping it.

He was also the same one who sold me a rod at a very good price after I slammed my 2 day old rod in my Ute tray last year. Safe to say next time I need a high end product I'll be heading out to see them.

Sounds like you've buggered your bearings Cowboy, I did the same with my Sedona after it copped a soaking in my dinghy rod holder.

Still don't understand how fishing manufacturers can

Thu, 2015-03-05 12:10

sell expensive gear for a watersport, that can't handle the water that they are designed to be used around.

Imagine if this was the case with Surfing or Waterskiing!

Surely they are taking the p1ss.

Cheers,
