egi rods?

I was just wondering if someone could tell me what the benifit of an egi rod is? and what makes a good one? From my experience squid are very agressive and will attack jigs on any type of retreive so i couldn't see them being extra usefull in inparting a particular action? also Squid jigs are not heavy so comfort in flicking all day would not be the concern. so im not sure if im missing something here but i cant for the life of me think of a reason why I would need to fork out 200+ on a dedicated squid rod. please shed some light

Cheers

Not a squid "guru" (sorry i love saying that) but bought a 8'3 lb egi rod, cheap daiwa one and as much as i dont like it, it does the job its built for, the action of the jig when you work it with this rod is insane. Saying that if they are easy to catch its probably not necessary. On a  boat any 2-4kg bream rod 6'6/7'0 will do the job nicely.

Good for land-based, but anything over 7' is a pain in the boat.

Theres a few reasons you

Theres a few reasons you might choose a squid rod over a normal rod:

They're long. Generally squid rods will be around 8' which allows longer casts when landbased which can open up more spots. As Till said, its a bit more of an annoyance off a boat (though, still useful if you're casting from a boad).

They're light. Theres not a lot of light (<10lb) light rods in the 8' range. The light rating means small-medium squid will cause the rod to bend. My rod is also very light in weight (lighter than most 2-4kg 7's) which makes it easy to cast all day.

They can cast heavy jigs. A lot will be rated to 3.0 or 3.5 jigs. Although they dont seem a lot, a 3.5 jig is typically 22grams. Most rods with such a light rating would struggle to cast anything above 15g most of the time (Try something with a 3/4oz rating under 12lb). Especially if you're belting them out. I can belt out a 20g twisty on my egi rod like a dream (makes it fun for tailor/queenies/flats fish/etc).

They have a very parabolic action (at least in the case of my HR). They're typically built with a much slower action than most other rods. Even small squid will start to bend the rod thanks to the light tip that folds away quickly. The softness allows them to absorb the squids lunges, reducing the chance of them coming off the hooks. The rods can load right down to the butt for the real monsters (or if you're catching fish on them). Makes catching small fish pretty fun, and you can use a larger lure than an equivalent normal rod. The rods have also been set to work the jigs so they can very aggressively twitch the larger jigs, but also have some finesse for lighter actions or smaller jigs.

Do you need a squid rod? Definitely not. Could probably catch just as many with a normal 7'+ rod. However, the reason why you would get a egi rod (if you wanted to spend the cash) would be because it suits squid fishing better. Basically a very light, slow/parabolic rod that can cast a lot heavier jigs than an equivalent regular rod and be that bit longer than standard 7' rods.

don't do it Webby, we enver have to work too hard for them out here, HOWEVER a light combo with 15lb braid on a 2500 reel with a spare spool for light line stuff/comps is a plus to have
