Favourite overhead reel for bottom bouncing
Submitted by Tbmc on Tue, 2015-12-22 21:15
Hi everyone
Im looking at getting a new overhead setup for myself for Christmas and was wondering what everyone's favourite reel is
was leaning towards tyrnos 16 or 20
Also does anyone know if they still make the torsa
Thanks

I use my tyrnos 8 more then
I use my tyrnos 8 more then any other reel i own its so versatile and its great for bottom bashing. And i use 20's for most of my trolling. I recon a 20 would be to heavy to hold all day.

Daiwa Saltiga Z30, small with plenty of grunt beautifully made. Holds 300m PE4 great for jigging as well if you want.
Love mine, a pleasure to use all day no worries.

Just my experience but I
Just my experience but I have a t-curve o/h 200 and a saltiga 40- has caught everything from 100lb marlin to KGW, has plenty of drag when needed and good wind ratio IMO. I don't find it heavy at all and it can hold a fair amount of 80lb line too
Always keen to fish

Yeah tyrnos too heavy as
Yeah tyrnos too heavy as others have said. Some nice options above but all a bit more expensive then the tyrnos as well. For an option that's about the same price as the tyrnos, but much lighter and still a decent reel which you can bottom bash, jig or troll with, have a look at the Daiwa saltist LD20. Great little reels, I've got one with 50lb drag on a demon blood Pe3-5 and it's a great little combo that you can do a lot with.
I havnt used one myself but people also say the fin nor marquesa are a good value for moment reel that might also fit the bill

Torsa 20. Hold that sucker all day and there's really not much it won't stop. Marlin, Tuna, Dhui's, Sambo's.... The list is endless

I have a couple of Tyrnos 12's
One is now matched with a T-Curve 200 Deep Jig o'head. Nice and light, rod rated at 24kg, reel has 300 od meters of 50lb braid. Do just about everything with it,I reckon. Rod replaced an Okuma 15 kg jig rod that met a sad end when a big mackerel made a snap decision to go vertical on the opposite side of the boat, smashing the rod against the chine. That particular outfit caught a lot of sails, plus all the usual NW suspects both pelagic and demersal , and jew and snapper. Good all rounder, the T-curve will be a worthy replacement, no heavier but with a higher rating. The whole outfit can be had for $500 from Tackle World.

As a few people have
As a few people have mentioned Talicas are a great reel for bottom bashing / jigging . super strong and light which is what you want . Nothing wrose then bottom bashing with a heavy outfit all day , even worse if you want to jig . Feel free to come in and check out our range.

Old Faithful
I keep going back to my 10 year old Interline tuna stick with a TLD25. Total combined weight with over 400m of braid is less than 1500grams. For fun I get it out, tie off the Hawaiian Snap at the end of the braid to something heavy and tell people to lean back and to try to break it. I can stick my patrol wagon in neutral and pull it along with it.
Yet I can attach a light rig on the end and still easily catch and feel whiting in 30m of water.
Replacement cost of that setup brand new is $400 including spooled braid.
I suggest have a good think about what you want to use the new reel for. If it's just a good bottom bouncing setup for 10m-100m of water for catching dermersals, then there's plenty of small light reels that can do that job. If you want to occasionally jig with it, then you'll want faster retrieve, and if you want to occasionally troll or deep drop, then you'll need extra line capacity and harness lugs (NB: my old TLD25 has the lugs, new models don't, Tyrnos do). You'll also need to marry it up with the right rod.
Plenty of things to consider. I hope you end up with an outfit that you like, and catches as many fish as my Old Faithful.

If you are budget concious
If you are budget concious like me then you can't go past Diawa Seagate (I have the 35 size) as they are usually around $100!

I have a Tyrnos 16 and 20, also have 2x TLD 25 And the I find the Tyrnos 16 the best for bottom bouncing, I don't find it heavy at all.

I use a tyrnos 16 and it has served me well over the 6 or 7 years ive had it. Gear ratio a bit slow and the wide spool gives the outfit a bit of a roll when retrieving but they are the only negatives for me.
Id get a narrow spool next time

talica 8
will land anything, holds 400 plus metres of PE 3 or 4 Daiwa boat braid.
Love it.
I had a Torsa and loved it, and was shocked at how good the Talica was, I also have the Talica 12, but overkill if not deep dropping.

ive been looking to and just
ive been looking to and just purchased a over head reel -fin nor lethal 20 lever drag 2 speed.weighs 680grams.6.2.1/3.0.1 gear ratio.(over 1mt per crank)spool will hold 540yd of 65lb braid. $264 with free spool of braid. worth a look. there are also smaller and larger reels.great for jigging and bottom bashing .I also was looking at tyrnos 16 and 20.but fin nor had larger spool, higher gear ratio and were over 300grams lighter .few people I know have the tyrnos and are happy with them.

Shimano Talica 12 or Fin Nor
Shimano Talica 12 or Fin Nor Marquesa 1. If you are south of Canarvon you can downsize but if you need to beat the boys in brown overcoats you need the grunt along with the gear ratio that these will provide, yep a bit expensive at around that $400 mark but for the number of fish I have pulled up on both reels they have paid for themselves about 3 times over.
50lb braid and a good Pe 3-5 rod for up north or 2-4 rod with 30lb braid and away you go. I look for a ratio of greater than 5.0:1 or over 1m of line per wind in a reel.
