Fish names and nick names

On a recent post someone put in a new name for mulloway,--mullagores!!  Why would you give a fish a new nickname that has more letters in it than its proper name. Have and still do hear them called kingies, river kingies, croakers and silver kingies plus the eastern staters [othersiders]  jewfish or jewel fish.

Herring  are one fish that doesn't have a nickname yet have seen some call them as "Hezza's" ?? never heard of them.

Samson fish, sambo's, sea kingies, kingies and lots of indecipherable things when someone has  a big one on his line.

Salmon have always been known as salmon  Tailor, blue backs[ real big ones] Choppers [small]   Break sea cod,  black arse , Marcia Hynes, BB'S and many more.

sounds too correct when you use the right name, that's colloquialism for you. A big black jew i call a Kingie also and not a mulloway due to the difference but that is influence from =my mate's family who are native to our land, very funny people to fish with, 200lb handline minimum and they catch the fish too, better than us with our 20lb braid and baicasters

Handlines

Thu, 2010-09-09 21:31

Spent a couple of weeks at Bidjidanga years back as a guest of a mate who was running the store then. This day he had to work and sent one of his workers to come fishing with me [needed a guide through the tracks in "men's land"] All he had was the heavy handline , 6/0 hooks and big ball sinkers.

Well I got him using a rod with a chrome slice lure, casting at a school of silver trevs around 3-4 kg, he was having a ball. He was a convert to rods from that day on. Out fished him by about 5 to 1 fishing the bottom in 15 metres of water him with the handline and me with a 6 foot ugly stik guts butt with an Abu cardinal reel and 20lb line.

Mind you I still use his technique when fishing heavy bottom from the shore. Big ball sinker running straight down to the single hook, big bait, no stopper or swivel, most times you can get it back every time by simply whipping the rod tip straight up and winding like mad.

Thu, 2010-09-09 21:34

must say this one day we got a Black Jew (Kingie) that made the handline look like cotton, barely got it in so thank goodness i didn't hook it on the braid, fishing from the shore too mind you so i couldn't chase. My mates Nanna pissed herself laughing when she saw what we brought to fish with and promptly told us we can give her all the fresh bait we catch.

I still use the rods and reels, nothing better if you ask me hands down. You just need the right one :)

Samsons

Thu, 2010-09-09 21:43

There is a spot in 60 metres off Yallingup for samson fish, used to love going there with a newie on the boat and drop the big hand lines over. That is IMO the only way to feel the full power they can produce. 300lb mono with a set of 8/0 tarpons and a full mulie for bait.

Have heard sambo's called every name in the book once the line starts to burn its way through your fingers.

They call the old Hezza

Thu, 2010-09-09 21:29

They call the old Hezza (herring), Tommy Ruff in NSW. Also heard them call Salmon, Sambo's.

Tailor in the USA are called Bluefish i think.

Much like up north are they Fingermark Bream or Golden Snapper?. Having lived in Darwin i call them Golden Snapper :)

I find it fun hearing different names for the same fish. Though this obviously leads to confusion alot of times, its a cool to get in with the locals lingo for their fish, or fush!!!! hahaha.

But the funniest i find is the multitude of fish that generally get labled as SHITFISH. Which even then gets shortened to SHIT'IES!

Tail

Because when you hold it to take the hooks out its tail is long enough to reach round and hit your back over where your kidneys are located.

Love the South African names for Tailor and Mulloway

Fri, 2010-09-10 08:18

I still think the term Mulloway is by far the best name of any fish, because if you are targetting them you will "mull away the time". In SA they are Kabeljoh (wrong spelling) and tailor is Elf.

Other best fish name is a Gobblegut. Man they have a huge mouth for such a tiny fish.

Stargazers - OOgly, fugly etc

Can't remember the name of the fish in particular but the old man used to tell me about fishing and only catching a 'Butchers Prick'. I am guessing a shit fish that was pretty slippery as in 'slippery as a butchers prick'
