first fish on plastics sambo???
Had a great day yesterday 10km sw of rotto trying some new ground started off pretty slow with a few undersized duhies and a shark. About 7 we found some likely looking ground shadi snagged up so while the boat was anchored on his line i hooked into a solid fish(double header) pulled up a 6kg dhuie and a undersized duhie. While i was fighting mine hamish hooked on and brought in a sized dhuie then we started backing up on shadis snagged line and he felt some bites on it the fish hooked on to the snagged line and unsnagged it for him unfortunately the eye on his rod was scuffed and snapped the braid half way up the rod looked like a decent duhie too. Had a look around for some other ground got a few blackarse a pinkie and a queenie to top our bag off also got lots of shit fish and undersized duhies all released on the weight. Stopped at a spot on the way in 45m and thought i would try the plastics I bought caught a wrasse which I was pretty happy just getting a fish on the plastic then hooked the sambo great fight to finish the day off love the feeling of the first initial hookup when using jigs and plastics. Next trip out I am only going to fish plastics and see if they are more productive than my mates fishing plastics. Wasnt sure weather this was a sambo or amberjack I've caught a few sambos before but they dont usually have the yellow horizontal line on them or do they? Sambo or amberjack after a few photos and a short swim near the boat he swam off quiet strong. Was a great day out considring seabreezes forecast they got it wrong yesterday but wrong was good for us no swell and very little ne wind awesome day. hanging to get out there again just gotta go stock up on a heap of diffrent plastics

well done mate, what depths were you at.
good to see the fish are still out there in my reg stomping ground, havent been out there for a while now, it will be my next plan of attact though.
i did get a few under jews as well last time out that way.
i thought the sambos were a bit more blotchy so to speak.
well done

mainly fished the 45m was
mainly fished the 45m was going to try deeper but after getting our two duhies we thought we would just fish our way home. Lost a heap of tackle only trouble with fishing the good ground is tying so many rigs thats why i pulled out the soft plastics. we get at least 4 undersized dhuies every trip its obvious that the release weights are doing there job.
Can anyone recomend some of their favourite sp brands and colours for the demersals any info would be much appreciated

Placcys..
My favs are Mcarthy 6 inch paddle tails in red mullet, baby elf and copper chartruce for Dhu's.I reckon the fact the colors are similar to wrasse is the winner.Love the 7" jerk minnows in pearl for pinkys also. Sambos are interesting as some have the prominent yellow line some are still blotchy some get quite pale and look like ambos.Generally that stripe would come across the eye and you can count the dorsal rays if your really keen.Def a sambo though.Good fish too!

Yellow stripe suggest
Yellow stripe suggest amberjack, but too dark compared with recent ambers we have got and strip is not as prominent through eye....agree with Crisp, most likley sambo.
Nice work.
