06 Dec 2016 4:37 PM AEST - Flouting lobster rules is no game as white walkers set off
As the mass migration of rock lobsters known as “the whites” commences along WA’s west coast, Fisheries and Marine Officers are targeting people interfering with the lobster pots of others.
A 51-yearold man from Sinagra had his 6.5m aluminium vessel seized at Ocean Reef marina on Friday (2 December) and, while the seizure unfolded, four other men were having their cases dealt with at nearby Joondalup court for serious offences from last season.
Zan PETROSKI (aged 47, of Yokine), Stevce KOVACEVSKI (50, from Nollamara), Aleksandar KOVACEVSKI (24, of Nollamara) and Slobodan STAVRESKI (42, from Westminster) received a combined total of $18, 652 for a range of offences in December last year, including interference with other fishers’ lobster pots, following a targeted surveillance operation in the Hillarys area.
In addition to interference charges, Petroski was also convicted of using excess pots, taking totally protected rock lobster, possession of rock lobster flesh and mutilating rock lobster to prevent identification, Stevce Kovacevski for using excess pots and taking protected lobster and Stavreski for using excess pots, mutilating rock lobster and possession of lobster flesh.
The latest of four vessel seizures this season under Operation Bagana and Friday’s court outcomes re-enforces to the community that Fisheries officers take allegations of interference seriously and will continue to investigate and take action.
North Metropolitan Compliance Manager Todd A’Vard commended the hard work of the Hillarys based Fisheries officers and thanked the community members who have reported illegal activity.
“Last Friday’s court case shows our officers will detect and apprehend fish thieves,” Mr A’Vard said. “Hiding rock lobster on your vessel, mutilating breeding condition lobsters and pulling other people’s fishing gear will all get you a day in court – and the consequences will likely be costly.
“Our Fisheries officers are seeing large numbers of fishers do the right thing – a pleasing result from the comprehensive covert surveillance and inspections we are carrying out this season.
“Now the whites have started, we expect more fishers on the water and it will be busy out there, so weight your pots correctly, keep your ropes to the right length to avoid tangles and surface chop-offs and don’t touch anyone else’s gear – and everyone will have a great season.”
Anyone with information about illegal fishing activities is urged not to get involved, but to carefully observe what they see and give FishWatch a call on 1800 815 507.
The State’s aquatic resources are highly valued in our community and everyone should respect the rights of others when fishing. More information on rules and limits is available in the Recreational fishing for rock lobster guide or at www.fish.wa.gov.au, or collect the guide from departmental offices, or Information outlets.

unsure if still applies but
unsure if still applies but they (fisheries) used to be able to take the car that towed the boat to the ramp as well - I remember as a kid watching on the news this old guy throwing himself in front of his land cruiser to try and stop them taking it off him - haha - (they just drove around him)
Couple of boats been confiscated now, you would hope that is enough of a deterrent for some of these quality individuals....
