Fishing for swan river shark

For the last few years i have said i would pull my finger out and try to target the swan river bull shark.

Never got around to it but this  summer i home to hae landed one.

The good thing is that if you are targeting bull shark , you could get lucky and hook a mulla :)

So far im thinking fishing  between burswood and redcliff usin whole mullet rigged with snelled wire with 2 decent hooks to a running spoon sinker.

Rod is a custom 1 piece 8 wrapp kilwell blank and reel wil be a penn 950ss with 50pound

I do know that the depths of freshwater bay boatshed have seen a boy get killed by shark in 1922

Anyone have any tips on how and where to get em?

Careful

If you are going to fish for them, just make sure its not where people will go swimming. Last thing you would want is to be soaking big baits all day long and have someone go swimming after you've left and have a bull shark come through and clean them up.

It could end up a bit like that story on the East Coast where anglers were swimming out baits on their surfboards and catching whites within the swimming areas. Next thing you know shark fishing was banned...

Yeah true Adam, i will try

Mon, 2007-10-29 10:23

Yeah true Adam, i will try to go to a spot where no-one swims but the bait either whole mullet or whole boney wouldnt be much bigger bait than what gets used for mulla anyway.

I think the s*@t would hit the fan if ya tryed to burlie up hard in these areas but using a fish for bait should be fine

Riverton/Shelley!

Mon, 2007-10-29 13:47

You may try around Riverton/Shelley area or even Manning's stretch of river. I've witness a baby Bull Shark chase me Black Bream along that area. Luckily the shark is only the same size as the Bream.

My reels screaming zzzzzzz.... awwww damn it, its another boat!

All the best for the future fishing trips.

A 950ss, thats quite a small reel to be tackling a shark with IMO, considering the size they can reach.

Sharks in the Swan!

Mon, 2007-10-29 16:28

I'm pretty you get the odd 4-6ft ones that cruise through, the one that was witnessed at Riverton which was trying to eat a pelican was reported to be 4ft or so. But can't really tell hey, I hear the Canning Bridge is a hotspot for Bullsharks breeding. Often I get me bream half back so maybe. Majority at night.

The 950ss in my opinion will handle it peice of piss. Its stopping them from going into the structure that will be ya down fall on braid tailormarc. Id be using 30lb mono mate but then on that reel you wont get enough line capacity. off the beach you can stop 4 footers with less than 100m of line. If you give em heaps they usally give in  pretty quickly but thats only ones around the 4 foot mark im talking about :) Any bigger out of the river expecially around structure like bridge pilons etc will be a senasational effort IMO.:)

Just have to put the brakes on hard from the start!!! lol!

Like you said Spess, structures will be a drama...might need rope lol!

I never use braid...im a mono man. All my fish from day1 have been landed with mono.

Im spooled up with 50pound at the moment.

Going down the river this weekend loaded with whole sea mullet lol!

yep they get pretty big .ive caught quite a few but not with any structure to worry about and not in the swan.
biggest to date was close to 9 ft . caught on a busted arse dawia regal loaded with 50 lb mono .took me about 4 bourbons to get him to shore .he was big .its the first and only time that my mate frizza wouldnt grab the shark by the tail to pull it ashore . we piss farted around trying to tail rope the big slug only to have the line snap at the swivel .good fun though.i reckon your in with a big chance with the 950ss and 50 . give him nothing. IMO

never gaffed a shark .it

Tue, 2008-01-29 11:33

mr bitie
never gaffed a shark .it would want to be hell sharp ,best bet is grab the tail carfully then pull them back quickly up the bank OMHO  as i think a gaffed 3 foot shark would go berserko  .only sharks i know that can touch there tail are wobbies hammers and white tip reefies. could be wrong
good luck.this pic was in boutimes boat .it was not easy reaching over the side to grab this 5 footer by the tail .but  gaff him and i reckon all hell would of broken loose . he swam off strong as

Not Sure if this right thread

Thu, 2012-04-26 14:34

 Hi guys

Not sure if this is right thread but it kind of relates to your stroies above....

Ive just joined forum as i was trying to do a little research on what could have taken my bait yesterday, Mainly because i want to try gear up enough to cover myself the next time i went out so i guess i will start from the beginning......

Went out fishing around lunchtime yesterday down to east Fremantle a little spot I have discovered for catch loads of bait fish and some decent sized bream. I took the usual gear with me for such fishing... one  9ft spinning road set up with a lure , another 9ft set up for bait with a variety of baits and on this occasion i brought my 12ft beach rod ( mainly as i was going to try for mulla and it the only biggish road i have here in OZ ATM ) spent first hour or so flick prawn bait and spinning road out managed to catch a few bream, trumpets and one tailor . After i had had my fun with the little ones and time fast approaching later evening i decided to gear up the big rod ... Simple running sinker with gang hook mullie .... no sooner had i tightened down to the bait my reel started screaming ... took at least 100 meters of line in just a few seconds... i tightened the drag down to set the hooks and when the et i nearly left the rocks and entered the water. I fought for about 15 minutes struggling to stop the reel, the fish still taking line slowly then all of a sudden violent tugs then nothing but pressure again... just as i started to reel in some line and claim back some ground  one final tug and my line snapped.... Not to be out done i reel in gear up and set bait back out same set up ... 30 minutes later ..bang ... reel was screaming again ....... this time i managed to stop what ever it was but it was still 150 meters from the bank and for about 30 minutes we hit a stalemate.... after i had regain composure and got ready to start reeling back in some line without any warning or violet pull nothing my 25 kg line snapped clean off .

so i guess my questions are, could this have been a bull shark ? , and if it wasnt what the hell could it have been ? im relatively new to fishing in Australia so i dont know characteristics of different fish when they strike but going on evidence of other people accounts im leaning towards some kind of shark ... what do you guys think ?

Any help would be most apprecaited

Kind regards

Barry
