Interesting boat....
I know not many of you are fans of koolyn craft.. but what about this 1 in the ad?
Do you think the modified hull would actually work?
Bloody dear for a tinnie... but does have new 4 stoke on the back... which still means he's trying to get 15 - 20k for an old hull...
Anyone have any genuine advice on whether this modified hull would actually work and minimise the bone crushing banging of an alloy hull???

Ali boats tend to lift because they're light.

The work was done up the bow
The work was done up the bow right?
The thing is, a fine entry is going to help as long as it doesn't lift. Once it has lifted, its coming down on the boat further down, and that is where a deep-v helps.

Id be a bit worried about the back end in a bit of chop as well dosnt look to have very tall sides or back other than that it does look tidy take it for a sea trial in the ocean when its a bit choppy and you should be able to make your own decision

Was thinking of doing the dumbest thing.... and trading a 6.3m Caribbean Reef runner for it...
It would be a bit smaller, easier to put in the water on my own, cheaper to run etc... BUT... last time I went out on an alloy boat.... I couldnt walk the following day!!!
I live up in Carnarvon so its a bit of a hike to seatrial.... Im trying to get a bit of honest feedback before I make a decision to tow the reef runner down to Perth...
Unless a fishwrecked member has a 5-6m alloy boat they would consider trading with me!!! ;-) Needs to have EASY access to bow

Help is at hand
Give me a yell and I'll catch up and give you a few tips to handle the reef runner on your own.
With a bit of practice you won't want to get rid of the reef runner, I know what I'd rather be in.

Koolyn
Dooma
I have a REEFA , which is the same as a Koolyn but changed names after the owners split. They are a rough riding ali boat as the deadrise wasn't very sharp and cockpit was well forward. They are however a nice stable fishing platform once you are on your spots. The mods he has done might make a difference, but as Carnarvonite says if it has worked- then why is he selling.
I would suggest getting someone you know and trust to go out on a seatrial

This boat works!!!!
I pretty sure Marindi Fabrications did the mod in bunbury and it was very successful.
Give Peter a ring at the workshop, he knows how to build boats and fixem right.

dont know
Uesd to see the odd cray boat up gero way with that type of bow...cant recall the reasons behind the design tho.
My concerns for a trailer boat would be in a following sea, and while broaching can be a problem I can see with this type of bow on a run about it could cause REAL BROACHING PROBLEMS if one is not super careful.
But then again I could be very wrong. Just my thoughts.

Full bow and broad shoulders
Full bow and broad shoulders suit a following sea, sharp entry suits a head sea.
Somewhere in the middle is the compromise you want.
The crayboats referred to were mostly from memory the older Star and Macboats I think which were pretty full in the front anyhow, but also a semidisplacement hull which is less prone to a savage broach than a light fast runabout.
Doooma I wouldnt trade down just for the fuel economy, the figures you posted on the recent thread were pretty impressive considering the outboard and weight of your boat. You wont see a huge advantage over that.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Hmmm, maybe the owner had a bit of ali and steel lyin around and a kick arse welder and was bored one day......would that thing steer at low speeds????
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Expensive for what it
Expensive for what it is.
Would be OK in chop, but I'd not want any decent sized sea following me in that thing - especially with the helm (i.e. skipper & passenger weight) so far forward .
It'd need every kg of that podded Merc to keep the nose up.

Baby ship! Probably won't plane, I wouldn't touch it!

Looks ugly! It would slice through the chop but would get effected by even a small following sea. I can imagine it broaching quite badly
There are better boats around the 5-6m than that for $33k!

I'm no expert...
But if that style of hull was highly successful, why the f**k wouldn't they build all alloy boats like that?

Sometimes a really
Sometimes a really fine/sharp bow and moderate dead rise at the transom can lead to broaching in a following sea. The Reefrunner is a great hull so don't rush into changing!

Can't see it
Can only say there isn't a whole lot of bone jarring or head crushing going on in my old fibreglass hull and it was a lot cheaper than $33k...
