Help removing marine screws
Submitted by Work to Fish on Sat, 2021-01-30 13:06
Hi all,
I'm trying to replace the carpet in my runabout, but am having trouble removing the marine screws that hold the mounting brackets for my removable seats.
These are marine grade Phillips screws (say 25 years old) that are screwed the the seat bracket and into marine ply.
No issue with rust, but from the screws I have removed, there seems to be a build up of crap or maybe even glue within the top 1cm of the thread.
I managed to remove one of the seat brackets, but the screws in the other one won't budge. Or I've ran out of strength :)
Only thing I've tried so far is put screw driver in the head and then hitting with hammer. It helped loosen some a little bit.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Shane

Try this
Get your screwdriver and a pair of multi grips. Lock the grips onto the screw driver shaft nice n tight then push down with your left hand on top of the screw driver and spin it with your right hand. Failing that angle grinder time!.

That's exactly what I do
That's exactly what I do Chris and usually works a treat. Just need to seat the screwdriver head correctly, I usually tap it in with a hammer to disolve sand etc.

Thanks for the tips
Thanks for the tips guys.
I don't have many tools unfortunately - I slowly add to the collection as I need certain tools.
I don't have any multigrips, but have a large wrench - will see if I can lock it onto the handle of the screwdriver and push down with other hand.
Failing that, I will get an impact screwdriver from Bunnings.
Failing that I guess angle grinder is the only other option.
Cheers

We were getting Australia 2
We were getting Australia 2 ready for a regatta in 2000 and had to remove a few screws and that was the only way. Some of the museum staff were looking very stressed.

For sure...only way with the older stuff, you could try some CRC...but if it doesn't move with a good fitting screw driver and correct size socket on the nut then out with the grinder.

Hey mate another trick to try is to tighten the screw a bit then undo it , seems weird but it usually helps to loosen them , sort of breaks the seal . Goodluck

Thanks again for the tips guys, all sorted now.
I used the wrench on the head of the screw driver and all but one came out relavtively easy - amazing what a bit of leverage can do!

Yay!
Start adding to your tool collection buy decent tools and they should outlast you....:D I'm 6000k from my shed at the moment and I'm missing it desperately. Trying to get tools over here is near on impossible. Can't wait to bring the truck, boat and half my shed over.
