how far out??

hi all.
Just recently bought a 4.8 mt boat.
Just wondering how far out people go in a boat this size and how safe they feel....I go out about 10nm but seems everyone goes out hell of a lot further.

Just wondering others experiences ect and thoughts

Cheers

Each to thier own mate. So

Each to thier own mate. So many variables, depends on the actuall boats capabilities, the skipper knowledge, experience and confidence, the weather conditions and location etc.

But personally, I've had my 4.8m ally out to the fads off Perth. It's a capable boat with a reliable engine and I was fairly confident on the conditions and had ample fuel available. On the day there was no swell, it was like 0.6m off rotto and it was a mill pond out there and predicted to be like that all day. And on the day even if the wind come up, it was only gonna get uncomfy with the chop and not really dangerous, so I felt safe going that far. Ended up being a cracker of a day too!

I think the biggest thing tho is how well the skipper knows the boat and making a decision based on that

thanks mate yeah its an old guardian solid as a rock and good motor on it....was flat as the other day got out to 10nm and felt pretty comfortable..think it will just be a thing with time as the other day was pretty big swell down here and didn't feel very comfortable about 200m from the entrance to the Cut...so will just keep getting more competent and not rush into it..:))

Yeah that's it mate, take your time and get to know your boat and you will figure out what it's capable of and work out the difference between being uncomfy and being in a dangerous position.

Due to work and other commitments, usually my only chances to fish are afternoons, and more often then not the sea breeze is in then. But I'll often head out in 15 to 20knot onshore winds (20knots being the absolute max) to fish the arvo's, as long as the swell is below 1.5m's. It's very slow going getting to my spots and pretty bumpy when your out there but the fish seem to love it. Also not going far out when it's like that, only a few km's to a inshore lump for an anchor and burley session.

Hahaha yeah the old sounder, aka "fish finder". Yeah like you said that's a whole other story! You in perth? If so I can point you in the rite direction with a few anchor and burley spots off hillaries. That might give you some idea of what's going on with your sounder. Doing trial and error anchor and burley sessions certainly helped me a fair bit when I started out

4.8 metres of cork ?

Sat, 2015-05-30 01:04

Yeah can only add to that already said, its such a variable thing , sometimes as said 500metres out from the ramp

is dodgy , where 20kms out another day its all good.

We started boating in 1982 in a 1980 4.9m derban, made in mandurah , and athough it got us through most things

wasnt that much of  a solid boat, but its what we had.

We fished, trolled, dived , skied, swam, crabbed , prawned and picniced from it, we had it offshore from walpole via the river, dunsb, busso,

mandurah, trips around rotto, and it got mackies off two rocks , bream up moore river , launched off lano, and did two trips to macky islands,

and all on a 70 hp motor. We payed 5k for it , put a new donk in the 90,s , and sold it in the early 2000,s for 7k!

Divided buy the fun we had in it, the fish we caught , the places we went , thats cheap boatn 101!

I bought my first boat about 4 years ago. It was a mid 80s 14.5ft (4.3m) Northshore runabout with a 76' model johnson 55hp motor. That boat was so much fun! Took it out pass 3 mile reef with ease. Know your boat and you'll know the capabilities and limitations.

Happy boating & fishing!
