cant go wrong on any of those,
my preference would be the hydra sport first, whalers are a strong boat and the ride is as good as everyone raves on about but hull contruction aside i thought they were a bit shabby the way they were put together - stick your head into any access hatch where there is wiring or plumbing, the two i have been on the stuffs jucst a bit of a mess - maybe i am being picky but for the $$ i think you should expect more!

For reputation you would have to go the whaler?

Did you happen to spot the Robalo

Had a 255 conquest and a 2380WAC sailfish (Now the 240WAC). Would never own another boston whaler after the 255, there all hype. Poorly finished off once you have a good look.

The sailfish is put together better, had better quality fittings and kills it for ride. The sailfish is wider and has more deck space too. Make sure you get one with a minimum of twin 150's. Mine had a single 300 yammy and only just got the job done. The sailfish has a 24 degree deadrise versus 20 degree on the boston, the boston also has those huge chines that make it slap abit.

The sailfish kills all of them for storage and fuel capacity too. The 240 Sailfish is more in the same size as the 2601 stripers, 255 bostons and 2600 hydra sports.

If the sailfish rides better then the 255 id imagine it would eat the smaller conquest and hydrasports. The sailfish will use more fuel to run, so keep that in mind. A twin rig sailfish would also probably push it over the 3500kg limit.

Cheers

For similar money you could even get a new built Aussie boat.

Didnt expect so many negative comments regarding the bostons.....

I only have one in inetersted which is a 2012 but it hs a 300 HP mecury FS on the donk..... dont know much about them.

Yerh, i have only herd nothing but amazing things about the hydraq sports and build quality/ride but the back deck space is keeping me in question....

Sailfish again, nothing but good things but yet to find that onen in my price range...... found one that was slightly higher.

i dont think there is anything bad about the Whaler - me personally, just cant see the $ value in them - they use a grid type construction in the hull - which makes it super strong but also expensive to build -
money aside i would still pick the Hydra.... quality and look the goods too

Fri, 2015-07-17 11:49

not knocking the oceanmaster (well kinda am) but have a look at that design..... imagine trying to pull a stuck anchor in a bit of rough weather - lots of nice round shiny surfaces for your to go @rse over on !
i dont get why (most) small aussie built boats are always low sided and impractical.....

I had a Conquest 255 and was not overly impressed with the ride. I was more impressed with the ride of a Trophy 2502 that I tested.

Don't mix up a 255 and 235

Fri, 2015-07-17 21:46

Don't mix up a 255 and 235 Conquest, totally different hull. I have been on a 255, nice boat but I thought it was a hard riding hull which slapped a lot and was bum heavy with the twin 150's and underpowered. Was not a good boat into the chop. The 255 also has very little fishing room, much less than a 235.

That being said, it felt totally bomb proof with a huge following sea, unflappable, just no good into it.

I love my 235. Not the best ride, not the fastest, not the prettiest, but does everything quite well, good allrounder. I am surprised by comments about build quality. Mine is fantastic, wiring is quality American wiring, overall finish a lot better than say a Haines or Cruise
Craft. One of the strongest points compared with most other boats I have seen. Maybe some boats outfitted in Oz are not as good? Mine totally imported from US, cant fault it.

A 24 degree hull is always going to ride much better than a 20 degree hull like the Whaler, that's for sure. Different thing once you stop and start fishing....

If you have bulk coin, I recon an Albermarle 248 (about 24 ft in real terms) with an inboard diesel would be good. Jack shaft design puts the motor mid ships for great ride and no big bulge getting in the way where you fish, 24 degree deadrise, diesel will be great on juice and still trailerable with brilliant fishing setup.......Only issue may be following sea with the motor weight so far forward......all boats are a compromise.

 Aussie boats are still top

Sat, 2015-07-18 12:51

Aussie boats are still top dollar second hand but come with the negative of 70"+ hours on the motor, I can't justify that where you still can find late model Boatong and hydras with less then 150 hrs , and still cheeper.....

And I refuse Ali

My last boat was a 2301 Striper- definitely not in the same class as the 3 Brett was originally asking about. I would add triton 2486 in the mix too. There has been one on boatsales.com for ages but has 250hpdi- you want twin 150s.

Been on a trophy 25 and Seaswirl 23, ok but not great rides. Build quality again OK but average. Haines patriot/offshore good ride but compromised fishing cockpit space, Cruise Craft very pretty, light hull but very exy. Hard work finding the right boat in this category! Hydra sport looks quite nice. Brett, give me a yell next week, will try and get you out for a run on the Whaler, at least you will get to see how it goes.
