Kalbarri - need rod & reel ideas??

 Hi all,

Just after some suggestions for a beach/surf combo for an upcoming trip to Kalbarri. Nothing too serious but I'm not a fan of visiting kmart for this sort of thing.

i like the look of the shimano stradics - possibly the 4000fj? Decent rod to match it with and which line?? I'm thinking 10' rod should suffice??

i won't be doing all nighters as I'll have the kids with me so I'm only really going to be chasing tailor and some of the other smaller stuff. Won't be targeting mulloway but I suppose it's always a possibility anyway.

Got a couple of other questions but I'll wait to see if I get any action here first.

Cheers.

Sorry... should have

Sorry... should have mentioned that!

$350 tops i'd say mate. Prefer to go under so the stradic might be an outsider there. Maybe substitute it for the sedonna/sienna?

Did you want a bait or lure setup?

If you want a bait setup and can stretch a little the 6000 oc baitrunner with a penn prevail 10ft rod would be great, this combo would handle any mulloway you would hook also. The stradic 4000 is a little small to balance up with a 10ft rod for bait setup (IMO). Sedona gets a good rap also but never tried one!

I do like the look of the Pflueger Salt reels.

BCF seem to have any size of that reel ($175 on its own) plus a rod in a combo deal for $189.

2 most relevant rods seem to be 7'6 10kg Pfleuger rod OR

10' 6-10kg Pfleuger rod - valued at $70 each but effectively getting it in combo for $14..

Thoughts guys??

Any of the major combos will satisfy.

The Shimano baitrunner combo, Penn SSV bait runner and rod, Shimano Stradic and cheapie rod, they will all do a wonderful job and last for many seasons.

10' rod is plenty long enough. Just be realistic in that a good lure rod won't cast a 4oz lead and bait well.

I would aim at a reasonable lure casting rod which is ok at casting 40gm slices/stickbaits.

You could then add to the collection by buying a cheapie bait rod at a later date.

Bait rod vs lure rod.

A lure rod can be nearly any rod. What matters is how heavy the lure is that you want to cast.

To lure fish effectively a rod needs a lightish tip (ie a tip that bends easily for the weight you are casting). So a rod that can handle 12-16lb  line class, and cast lures, will have a lightish tip that is flicky and folds away to a firmer mid section and strong but section. The flicky tip end unloads quickly to flick out a lure.

The manufactures will have descriptions of thir rods. Get on line and sort through their sites. Find a few rod that are designed for lure casting in the lure weight you wish to fish with (look at the weight of lures you wish to cast around). Then note the rod numbers down, go to shop and match rod number ID with rods and have a play with them. It's not too tricky.

Hope this helps, give it a try and see how you go. Work out your lure weights first, then sus out the rods.

Ok guys, so I ended up

Fri, 2014-04-04 17:25

Ok guys, so I ended up visiting a tackle store and after much discussion with a seemingly knowledgable guy I ended up going for a 10' ugly stick (prefer fibreglass rods) and the Pflueger Salt 80 loaded with 10kg mono.

He was adamant I should get the Salt 80, and although it seems to look fine, I can't help think it's slighhtllyyy too big for the rod. I had the 60 in mind with the 10' but maybe that would be too small...

Anyone got an opinion or any experience on this???

Next question is rigging - Kalbarri, beach, bait. Should I be looking at a tailor rig, 4/0 gangs and a running sinker and hope for a mulloway as well???

you wont be disappointed w the salt 080 ben. Its an amazing reel. Just got back from cliffs n had a big hookup on pinks using it n does an amazing job! rig would be a SA mullaesy rig. Sliding snap between 2 swivels then you can attach whatever sinker type you want n then a foot down to either gangs for tailor or 2 snelled 6o tarpons for mullas. This is a standard rig for pinks off cliffs mullas off beach. Give us a buzx when you getup here mate

Cheers mate will definitely let you know when I'm up...

Just hope the 80 is okay on 10 footer..

Thinking about buying a 8 ft ugly with okuma avenger 550 reel for smaller river stuff - whiting, tailor, bream etc, plus light beach use (mainly for the missus)... Cheap as chips but pretty good gear.
