landbased fishing tours

So been crunching numbers and ideas for a while now and am in the process of organising to set up a landbased fishing tours business out of kalbarri from frustrations north to the emu fence which is 30mile north. there will be full day tours and also overnight camping fishing tours available. All gear will be supplied and i will only be catering for maximum 5 people on the tour as not to upset a few of the local crew that do fish up the coast. 5 people is also easier to monitor especially when fishing from the rock ledges up north. There will be landbased ballooning for mackerel as well during the season when weather conditions are suitable. Just trying to get an idea of how many people on here would be interested in the idea of going on a landbased fishing tour up here. The vehicle will be a polaris 6 seater which is easier to have everyone on board instead of having seperate quad bikes. This will be a dedicated landbased fishing only. I know that landbased fishing is very popular and a different avenue than going on a charter boat.

The overnight camping will be full camping facilities with swags supplied and meals, toilet n shower setup.

If this does go ahead i will be coming on board here as a site sponsor. Just putting it out there to see what interest can be generated from people on here. I know there are alot of guys on here that love their landbased as much as i do! It will be all year round and depending on weather and swell conditions is where the tours will run to but it will have a 28-30 mile stretch that can be used.

thanks Tangles

Wed, 2013-11-13 10:28

hey breno. its depends mate on what i can get away with especially with department of land. at this stage the camping will be one nighters. timings havent been finalised yet as there uis a heap of stuff to consider but the overnighters will be either early morning departure and next day midday return or mid afternoon departure and mid morning return. Unfortunately this is going to take quite a while to set up and wont be up and running until next year hopefully before april. I have to deal with the shire first and that is always a drama up here.

yeah rig. you can send your missus to a resort for a cpl days and off you go! the one vehicle is for safety mate. there is too much risk of injuries with quads and some of the tracks up north are interesting and gota show the insurance company and department of land that being responsible is a priority.

maybe you could cut a deal with the edge for partners who wont be roughing it lol.  Yep a quad rollover would be enevitable wwith inexperienced people on that terrain.  Will the Polaris be able to hold enough gear etc?

sorted.

Wed, 2013-11-13 11:27

yeah rig the polaris is more than capable. huge towing capacity and with the trailor ill have made up that will have everything in it. 600 kg payload on back tray and w 6 crew in there will be no probs. been talking about all those issues with the polaris crew and sounds like these new polaris crewmans are pretty good. its all about being compact and mobile and being a motorcylist i know how to pack down with stuff.

yeah its been on the cards for a while marc but its taken me till now to really get the ball rolling mate. its not a huge outlay but commitment is everything and you dont have to twist my arm to go fishing hehe!

You will have to obtain a Fishing Licence before you can operate, Fisheries may issue you one or they may ask you to buy out another persons License. You just cant start up a fishing or anything that involves fishing without the appropriate license. Doesn't mean you cant do it...talk to Fisheries mate. They may have a list of already issued licenses that you may be able to buy

I cant see why as its guiding not taking someone out on a charter boat.
But then when ever you ask a Gov department anything out of the ordinary the answer will be "no you cant"-a pet hate of mine.
Check it out Tangles, there are plenty of land bases guides operating around WA-ask them rather than Fisheries. Government employs plenty of people to tell you what you cant do already.

nope no licence required as of early next year. already talked to them about that one. actually it was the first dept i phoned. no licence required to do landbased fishing tours as of early next year. worse comes to worse if i need to, one was issued to a guy here that did it 9-10 years ago so wont be hard to obtain one if needed!

yeah marc. mate anytime your up look us up. no need to go fishing by yourself up here mate. i got some pretty good spots down that way that produce.

i phoned the main office down in perth and told him exactly what i wanted to do. was told that if i wanted to do one now i would need to get an existing licence but as of early next year fisheries will no longer require you to need a permit for landbased fishing tours. Anyway as i said if i need to i can get one so no stress either way. Just it will save a bit of money having to worry about that expense. i can get in touch w a cpl of other people to find out. tks for the heads up Rob, appreciate it mate. ill make sure to find out properly.

And that would be where it would all come unstuck El Syd. Little towns like Kalbarri are not forgiving to people that shut places down to the locals. Plenty of room out that way and I think you will find there won't be too much competition for spots.

The Council will be the greatest threat. They really got upset a few years ago when they bulldozed the old caravan into the dunes.

Good onya for having a crack. I fished the Murchison Station stretch a few times years ago by following the rabbit fence from the highway and then backpacking to spots. Some very good water along there which doesn't get hammered. I'd be keen for the experience. All the best negotaiting the hurdles!

no probs

Wed, 2013-11-13 14:17

no probs with the locals EL SYD. well there is a cpl but you know what mate. 14 years here done my time and i can tell ya ive been up there when a cpl guys fromhere have rocked up on quads with 10 guys and fished the spots. ive got 5 crew maximum. i will abide by a code that if i am on tour and i get up to some spots and crew are fishing there i will move on. but on the other hand if im at a spot with a tour and people rock up i would expect the same respect for them to move on. i get on pretty well with the guys that go up there so no probs. the usual suspects that cause probs will just be ignored as i have a right to have a business and try and support my family. and being a single dad is bloody hard as it is so this is for my little girl future not mine!

yeah the caravans were a drama dodgy. i remember all that going on but at the same time people have to remember that the land from behind the high tide mark back is lease hold land that was from murch station. one of the guys from the caravans and i wont name names but he really made it hard and was a shit stirrer and didnt help things out but on the other hand it went both ways. sad that they went but its all forgotten now.

ive known callum and belinda from the station now for near on 12 years or so. i cooked at their wedding reception and use their access for sandboarding up at the sandpatch. i have their backing.

In 2015 state govt will be claiming back a 1km stretch from coast back inland from kalbarri north to shark bay so i have to get this up and running. it will be interesting to see whats going on with that in time but i got a feeling they want that land because of a gibb river road style all the way to shark bay from barri and thats the only way they can do it is to claim back that land.

yeah super peg meals will be supplied depending on if its day or night wont let people starve mate! i will have to find out about alcohol but if so in moderation remember its a tour not a drinking fest! and if fishing of the rock ledges i dont want people falling in cos its not nice up that way when you go in! but infatable life jackets will be part of the package when fishing off the rock ledges. not taking any chances.

i know that coast like the back of my hand from crayfishing and it is gods country up there. Fishing gear will be either 13ft or 15ft rods and reels will be either flueger salt08 or fin nor 950s. i have both and have put them thru every possible scenario and they are amazing reels for their price. easy maintenance on them. solid as and can get knocked around a bit and handle the bumps!

if i can get my lazy mate over fm the suny coast ill get him to build me custom rods if not i have huge options for rods.  a couple alvey rods r still an option to have as well but there will be 5 full rod setups there and all tackle supplied as well. its not gona be half hearted if you provide a service you do it right! The ballooning for mackerel is well just mind blowing from nth of the sandpatch all the way up to the emu fence so the options are endless.

i will be doing a tagging program as well for fisheries as i know alot about the pinky stocks up there in the shallows and want to show fisheries that the stocks up that way are in the masses. ive had days up there by myself where ive caught 50-60 pinkies in a session in the super shallows and they just kept coming.

craypots are another option for up there for an extra feed!!

no one will starve and i dont think anyone that goes on the tour will be disappointed!

id love it up and running by new years but unfort thats a bit early and i dont want to rush it! need to make sure everything is in place and covered hence round april may. which is perfect as the conditions are perfect for up there and low swell and offshores for ballooning options and ledge fishing options are there.

yeah EL SYD. i know the station owners and have put it past them. i have no prob with them giving me access to their property as from frussies to the emu fence is part of their lease hold. the rig will be launched from kalbarri by boat and taken across to the otherside for ease of tracking up the coast by beach and top track but the option is there for me to use the station for access as well to get to the northern spots so the choice is there for me to use.

awesome bit of coastline

Wed, 2013-11-13 22:21

awesome bit of coastline that, been up there a few times over the years, last time at the end of the July school holidays. Crossed at Kalbarri with 3 of my kids and drove/camped all the way up to the emu fence.

Didn't post a report cos we didn't fish, huge swell and we were just having fun, camp fires and exploring.

Last night a huge storm was forecast so we camped in the tin shack at the fence with an inside fireplace.
Storm hit at 2 am and we couldn't sleep it was so windy and raining.
So we lit the fire and I told shipwreck and tuna stories to the kids for 3 hours then bacon, eggs and beans for brekky.
Was probably the most enjoyable camping night Ive had with the kids, along with the islands, and Coral Bay, and bush camping...

I've always heard of your generosity to anglers heading up there and your always willing to take fellow fishwreckians out for a fish.
Was almost going to suggest you should start charging for it.

When it gets up and running book me in.

Also another idea is, to get in touch with a 4wd touring company and offer to guide one of their trips around in that area and do some fishing. Im mates with a guy that runs one. It could definitely bring in the big bucks.

additional

Tue, 2013-11-19 11:50

so a bit of additional info on these tours. costing was always going to be the tough part of starting up a new business and especially one like this. After considering all aspects of the type of tours available and taking into account equipment, permits needed, including access through murchison house station which will cost per person, meals etc. day tours which will be 10 hrs tours from departure time from kalbarri to return time to kalbarri. cost will be $150 full day tour. All equip supplied and meals included. I|f you want to bring your own gear and use your own gear exclusively then it will be $130 full day tour. Overnight tours which will be

4am dept from kalbarri and 9am return in kalbarri these tours will cost $270 per person. On ce again own gear exclusively $$250. All meals supplied, gear etc. For some people they might think this is expensive but you have to factor in costs and expenses overheads incl bait!! meals etc. These are fair prices for these tours. If you are the type of person that wants to fish all night and sleep when you get home well that will be up to you. safety will be very high on the agenda with these tours. If anyone has any imput into this which is positve (def no idiot remarks) feel free. This a unique and first of its type here and want it to go off with a bang! Things are still being sorted out, permits and licenes from dept land etc but well on its way. For those who havent fished this part of the coast there is nothing like it!

thanks tangles

Also aprl may is prime ballooning time and also all day offshores and low swell up there. This is a new business from scratch mustang and needs to be sorted properly. When im sorted ill be doing a week up there to iron out any kinks and a good test of the vehicle, also gota survey rock ledges and other spots up there.

vegan!

Tue, 2013-11-19 14:28

vegan! really rig! if someone is vegan mate i will accommodate but i need to have prior warning to that! as i said this will be dedicated landbased fishing tours only! This will be a tour dedicated to people that want to landbased fish!

vegan! oh man your funny but in truth! its a valid point and if there is a remote chance that a fisherperson is a vegan i will take care of them!

yeah Habanero, public liability is sorted. But i still dont want people going in the water or falling because it is a tour and rules will apply!

Im the sort of person mate that is not out to do highway robbery on people as i have seen with tours up and down the coast. Its about providing a service and making a bit of money along the way, as long as bills are payed and i can provide for my little girl then im a happy man! Profitiering is not on my agenda! Good crew, Good food, Good fishing, awsome scenery! sold! thats what its all about!

Sausage in a roll

Wed, 2013-11-20 20:42

Bake beans and cheese toasties or tofu  for the vegans. Slip into the tuxedo for some fine dining.      Food don't have to be to flash for me, something quick and easy during the day i.e. rolls and some fruit and a few snacks, dinner a BBQ, potatoe salad and coleslaw washed down with a few coldies and breakfast a bacon and egg roll with a good coffee maybe some fruit juice pack the gear up and head home. Always have a good supply of cool fresh water. Price is very reasonable for day or overnighter. Make sure you don't cut yaself short.

Tue, 2013-11-19 16:15

oh rig yee of little faith! ive been commercial cooking in sydney perth canberra and all the places in kalbarri mate so no probs with that part of it! cooking food is the easy part!

uncle being a teacher in something that you love doing is easy and ill be able to learn things as well as i'm not a guru in fishing, def not to the level that some of the guys are on here but i do know my landbased and that is all i need! if i have to work my arse off fishing well so be it! ill take one for the team hehe! As long as people go back with a smile on their face and a feed then that is the goal!

Masterchef haha! those programs have glamorized cooking in a way that is not what i like. And camping and cooking at a campout is totally different from that!

It will all come together justin slowly slowly

knowledge comes from experience and experience comes from learning!!

Fishwrecked will be your best friend because the demographic you will want to sell to will be hardcore fishos like us not the type that won't respect your safety rules and end up spoiling it somehow! The whole organization sounds too good to be true, especially the price I could not think of a better way to spend what some would on a night in a club

Tue, 2013-11-19 22:45

Bloody Tangles is like the "One Direction" of LB fishing, whipping the crowd into a frenzy of anticipation!

Sincerely hope that you get it up and running successfully-fully agree that you get everything in place rather than half assed.
Last thing you want is negative posts on here or elsewhere

The commitment shown to planning and smooth operations will stand you in good stead with MHS especially, as there will be a fair bit riding on it for them also as in liability

geez Rob no comparison to those clowns mate! there is a market for this and ive jumped on it! Even if most of my business is from fishwrecked then thats even better. Good for the site and good for LB! And well Ads will have unlimited trips when he wants hehe! |MHS is cool, ive known belinda and Callum for a while now, actually cooked at their wedding and she rekons its a great idea. They know ill respect their land and also be able to keep an eye on the area to make sure no one gets in and does any dodgy stuff! Its a win win for kalbarri MHS and Lb fishos mate! The popularity of LB is through the roof and adventure tours like this will put adventure LB fishing on the map a bit more mate! As i said earlier in the post, its about making sure people enjoy themselves and get a feed! Thats my moto mate, just no one fall in the water off the ledges!!

This sounds like it could work, think the pricing is a bit low for what your offering, but if you have crunched the numbers and are happy thats all that matters, good luck with it and I will book a trip with you next year on my way to Coral Bay.

Just make sure that all the

Sat, 2013-11-30 18:28

Just make sure that all the areas that you bring your clients to is only accessed by private property. Not many good lb locations around. Nothing worse than going to a spot and someone is there because word has spread around( there are always dodgy ppl out there). Not that I earn a lot, but I do run a small business, I reckon the price is on the low side. Although you don't have to maintain a boat and its fuel cost, kalbarri is a very small town( one of my faves) and you have to factor in the low season times when there are no customers. And during busy holiday periods when most ppl travel( like myself) I'm used to expect to pay higher prices for everything. May be have two set of prices, one off peak and one during peak periods.

hope you get it off the ground, love another fishing option when I head up there next time.

murchison

Sat, 2013-11-30 18:43

yeah fisharoo access is mainly on murchison house lease hold land and i have their approval as ive know callum and belinda for quite some time and we use their property to access the sandpatch for our sandboarding tours. i still need DEC approval as its lease hold from them. this is my back yard and i have priority!! best part is for 5 months of the year murchison house station is closed because of mustering to the public so thats a good one for me and when the state govt claim back a km stretch of land from the coast inland all the way up north it will make it even better for me. there are only a cpl spots up there to access by 4wd the rest is by bike and no bikes allowed on murchison house station! Anyone seen using there coastal tracks with no permission will be in a fair bit of trouble from callum and he doesnt mess around! they have told me that i can keep an eye on things up there for them when im up there as well!

best part is you just cant rock up there when theres swell and expect to fish. you have to access the station either way and need permission to do it!

can only do 3 overnights a week because of the structure of the tours and day trips inbetween.

costings are being worked out at the moment and overheads for the trips but when a final price is set it will be standard, im not like other people that profitier from busy periods. Its only a small investment to get going so i will make money and cover costs without charging for busy periods at a different rate mate. its about giving people the experience of a unique part of this place that you cant get to normally. the cost of running a tour whether peak or off season is still the same so it wont matter for me.

Will be making sure that no gps or photo gps settings are on thats for sure.
