Long shot - but anyone in England fancy a fish this weekend?

Long shot I know, but I'm in London at the moment and look like I'll have 2 spots free on a charter out of Eastbourne jigging the wrecks on Saturday.

2 of my friends just cancelled. Will be testing out some Temple Reef and JM gear on the local species.

If you are in town and keen to get involved, please drop me a PM.

Cheers,

Dan

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Yeah mate going pretty well. Don't want to jinx myself (probably just have) but looks like we might finally get a low-wind weekend over here.

Last 6 trips have all been cancelled due to wind, so will be great to get out.

Just got back from Thailand testing out the JM Arrester 630 baitcasters. Will put up a report later today.

Mon, 2014-06-09 23:40

Hey Ben

Boat sails from Eastbourne - which is like 85-90 miles from Southampton.

So not super close - but around the same distance as I'm driving (it's 80miles from my place).

Drop me a PM if they are interested.

Cod - no worries, let me know.

Dan

just out of interest, what species are you likely to catch on jig over there. I didn't think they had anything worthy of catching apart from a few trout?

in the north sea?

Cod, pollack, Ling, coalfish, conger eel all very nice on the tooth. we were fishing with over Jigs 30 years ago there before they where even heard of over here only we called them pirks and consited of a bit of chrome pram frame filled with lead a trebble on one end and a split ring on the other about 200 to 300 long and 20 to 25 thick.

very sccusessful way of fishing for the above species

Yeah fishy fingers has nailed it.

I'll be fishing primarily for cod, but there is likely to be some bycatch. Pirks are still getting used over here, and unscented soft plastics are taking off.

What I haven't seen used though are demersal jigs. It might be that the cod aren't interested in them, but I plan to find out this weekend! Going to be fishing different gear to everyone else on the boat I suspect, so I'll either clean up and convert a few anglers to jigs, or be licking my wounds by the end of the day and investing in some pirks :-)

Though in my experience there aren't many fish in the ocean that can resist a 180gr caprice or an FCL Labo SLZ!

Eddystone eels

Tue, 2014-06-10 18:44

when I lived there we also used eddystone eels they where the first soft plastics used more like bait than retreiving a lure ie let it waft in the current but killers on the bottom fish and others

Yeah mate it is still those eel things.

Except the ones that are popular now are called Sidewinder sand eels. Otherwise I think they are the same
