you need to cut the jaws out

Tue, 2010-11-09 22:48

you need to cut the jaws out carefully and trim most of the meat off then put them on an ants nest or sit it in the sun in an open position. i have a set from a mako of about that size and them teeth are sharp and hurt when you slip

Mate they will steal ANYTHING in gosnells, there is probably some bogan with some shark jaws around their neck on a chain.

Yeah the compost was a stupid idea in retrospect lol

Jaws

Wed, 2010-11-10 01:21

The easiest way to cut them out is to cut right through the snout so that the lips are still connected, then trim all the bits off. Cut the covering away from over the unexposed teeth and take a lot of care not to cut through the hinges of the jaws.

When you have trimmed them, set them up with a stick to hold them open and another to spread them apart crosswise and put them away in a dry spot away from ants and dogs!!!]they love chewing them, teeth and all] When they are dry get a fine sharp knife and trim any rough bits and finely sand them back untill theyare smooth and white. Some give them a coating of clear varnish just to protect them but its not necessary.

Their flesh is apink colour much the same as ronzie but tastes a bit stronger.

Dogs and Jaws ....good advise , just a little late .

After spending a couple of hours cleaning up a big set of Tiger jaws in Hedland I stuck them on a stick in the garden to dry out ....

They went missing and I thought that one of our indiginous brothers had decided to borrow them .

A few days later and there are shark teeth all over the front door mat ....... how she didn't cut up her mouth is a mystery.

as a side note for anyone

Wed, 2010-11-10 09:41

as a side note for anyone cutting them out like Carnarvonite posted.. which i find is the best way .. soak them in milk for a few hours before hanging them up .. it brightens up the jaw plates a lot ..

if you want the teeth out of the jaw you boil it all in water for a few minutes .. this disolves the cartlidge holding them in.

Prop them with sticks too.

vertically and horizontally but losely as they will shrink and distort.

Wed, 2010-11-10 16:02

also if the shark is to small or still young (happend with one of my sharks) the ants and maggots just ate most of the bone aswell because it was still pretty soft so i wont be putting them out with the ants any time soon.
