Metro Salmon
Wind was forecast to be crappy but dropping off at 1pm and my bro and I headed out of Freo heads around 12:45 and it was a lot stronger than the forecast but we persisted. Went out started at Success Bank and caught 6 squid in 3 drifts so decided to troll out to the shipping channel to catch some big whiting. Got a hit heading out but no hook up so we setup a did a few drifts over the shipping channel but got swamped by Butterfish and one whiting but we hooked into a few bigins that kept spitting the hooks which we called for skippy as we've caught them in that spot before.
I hooked something solid and it took some a heap on line on the 1000 Rarenium on 1-2 rod so I let it run and when it stopped I started to gain a little bit and next thing I knew it took OFF and I was looking at my mono backing so palmed the spool and my rig snapped off.
I started rigging up my snapper combo with a soft placcie and at this point I noticed about 3 birds flying together so I started driving towards them and sure enough the water was erupting and more birds came in. My brother chucked out a Yo Zuri hydradrive and he was on before it even hit the water and after a decent fight landed a 7-8kg Salmon. They just wouldn't take the placcie so we did another run and hooked up on the lure again and I spent a good 10-15 mins fighting a beast that was taking more line than I could get in. Got him within 15m of the boat 3 times and each time I did he'd just run out another 40m. Finally got him where my brother could grab the leader but I thought I could get him in a bit closer and he ran again, at this stage I decided to palm the spool to lever him in and the 30lb braid snapped sending the beast away with a $27 lip piercing.
Pound for pound these things are amazing fighters and can't wait to head back out and challenge them again!

They're good fish, even better on bream gear though. You just need to be a little bit more patient.

Jack, you know you can chase them with the boat if you're at risk of being spooled.
Good fish to cut your sportfishing teeth on though and learn a bit about the game.

Brought old mans yacht down
Brought old mans yacht down from South Perth YC to Freo SC today. As we were leaving the heads, I threw a lure out the back and within a minute or two we were on. Problem was 60 foot, 10t yacht, sailing along at 7 knots, and a 5kg fish being dragged behind...
Surprised it was dragged as long as it was with 30lb line and the reel locked off. Pretty sure the fish turned sideways and after a relatively quick fight where we simply couldn't get line back, it bust off.
Brand spanking new lure too which was a pain. They LOVE the Smilin Jacks!

Lost a Halco Twisty (40g) the other day due to a fast-tied slackarse knot, copped a good whack. Used my favourite $1.22 mulie-style lure from Guangzhou, China (eBay sale) and landed more than 20 in just under 2 hrs. Great fun.
When I was a kid we sailed Mirror's from FSC and we always used to run a handline out the aft with a popper or a slice and when you can't stop so easily it adds a good element to the fun :P Heavy mono was our saviour hehehe. ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR !

So, if I've got this right there are some salmon swimming around with some expensive lip piecing's.
I'll keep and eye out for them, I think most of the lures come out after about a week or so.

Would be sweet to land one with a Smiling Jack in its gob :P. What colour mate incase one of us finds it !? A buddy of mine is making lures from butterknife handles, but bent like a Twisty " ~ " sorta shape and using some plain and some variously coloured. Nice n cheap.

There's a salmon out there
There's a salmon out there with a $100 fly line hanging out its gob too..! Hooked one the other day and whilst I fought it from the front of the boat my old man hooked up at the back of the boat.. Mine ran across his braid and goodbye flyline!

Dawesville beach yesterday....
...after spending the better part of the last two weekends salmon fishing there for no result, switched over to 2kg gear for some herring fun and sure enough...70mm strada dancer whiting lure gets inhaled and it's off to the races!
If you think bream gear on salmon from a boat is a challenge, try it from the sand! After a 100m jog towards Mandurah, the thing decided to put it's head down in the gutter 5m in front of me, happily finning along while I was pretty much helpless to do anything...then it jumped straight up, and my not-so-perfect perfection loop slipped...gone!
Still, was stoked the 4lb fireline and drag on the low end Sedona 1000 held up and it was ultimately my dodgy knot tying that let me down....then proceeded to hook another on 15 lb gear but that one threw the hooks on about the fourth jump....no fish landed but a whole lotta fun!

Had a squizz at a couple of spots this morning ending up at ammo jetty and didn't see Jack. Plenty of blood on the jetty from the weekend, I think we need a good blow to break up the schools out wide.

Was about 20 knots when we were out yesterday and we were drifting around 1.3kn with a sea anchor which made squidding very hard work. The school we hit was about half the size of a footy oval from looking at the splashes and not very far out

After dropping a good fish straight off the bat I couldn't work out why I wasn't staying connected to anything yesterday morning. After about a dozen more casts realised my assist hook had broken off. Doh!
