If you have your own Gear take it if i was going on a mills charter i would also take some of my own Bait as when i went they even cut up mulies for bait you couldnt have a whole mulie at a time (i hope this has changed but im not sure) and i hope you like fishing on a crowded Boat sorry for the negative coments but i personally havent had or heard of too many good experiances with mills
my sugestion would be get there early and try and get the back right han corner, if you have your own rods put them there as it is the best spot to fish from on their boat
same as what Graham said take your own bait and gear.
My tip is take a big esky with ice in it for your catch(if your lucky enough to catch something)....and if you do get a fish watch, and make sure it dosnt sit on the deck for an hour in the sun !
IF YOU EVER NEED A LIMOUSINE...CALL LAKES LIMOUSINES BALLAJURA
Take a look at which side the steering position is on up in the flybridge as that will be the side they are going to fish from then stick your gear in that back corner.
packed to the fucking rafters
i cudnt even fish on the starboard side i had to fish on the back
my line kept drifting through a guy on the starboard sides
didnt do too bad with tons of BA, swallowtail, skippy, sambos and many more but it was just to packed
i got done by a BIG sambo
but yeah i dnt recommend them
what can i say...
some charters are just run of the mill(I dont take credit for that call ahah)
shit fishin, shit skipper... dont waste you're money, they drift on dessert and tell you it's gold. bet you only bring home two keepers and less than two dhuies on board..... wotta joke
I would defineatly agree nebraska is by far the best going .Crayfisherman for 45 years and keen line fisherman as well.Travels all over the ocean to get you a fish if he needs to
I think just about any charter is better than mills another bad one i experianced was the office wouldnt go on it again even if it was free.
Davy_g i have had some cracking days on blue Juice with good results
If i had to go on a charter i would bite the bullet and make the effort and go to mandurah and get on aqualib havent had a bad day out with them yet a little pricey but i have always got results when going out with them
I've only been on a charter once, was mills and was bloody awesome , out of me and my mates we got 3 good sized snapper 1 shark 2 skippy and 2 good sized0baldies, i think about 8 snapper between 70-90cm were landed and they went straight into the slurry as soon as people caught.
I keep hearing my trip was a one off anyway
*Your not wrong about them telling you each spot is gold, everywhere we went he said it was a personal favourite and it did produce but 'it was better yesterday' seemed to be his defence.
Do take your own gear unless you want to basically be dropping and lifting all day, not a chance of getting busted on 80lb mono and you wont feel a bite in 80-120m deep. (we went to 180m deep)
Ran out of mulies on the boat but had plenty of squid which caught most of the fish anyway, for 180$ you can do alot better
Flangies..flangies! I was on that same charter. You my remember my mrs caught the Turrum. Anyway..the only way 8 snapper went straight into ice slurry as soon as people caught them, was if you brought your own ice slurry. One thing that pees me off with that charter is the way they keep peoples catch...i think that alot of people would get sick after taking there fish home! I can post a picture of the catch esky if i need to jog your memory!
IF YOU EVER NEED A LIMOUSINE...CALL LAKES LIMOUSINES BALLAJURA
Pretty sure I remember someone's story about a gf catching a dhufish and the deckies saying that they were going to take it. When it came time to go home they only managed a fillet or something.
That looks shocking actually, i swear when we went there was atleast ice and water and i know for a fact there was water atleast. This is disgusting, i'd go to red dot and buy my own esky and fill it with my own ice if this is what they are doing.
Wouldnt the fish spoil?
id rather buy a new rod or reel than spend 180$ to go on a charter and have my fish in a slow cooked seafood salad
Nah flangies, i have been out with them a few times...i always get there first, to get a good spot, and watch them get the boat ready. Have only ever seen maybe 1 or 2 blocks of ice get put in. The funny thing is the softfdrinks are normally iced well, but the fish never do..(.im not here to drink softies...were is the bloody fish??)
IF YOU EVER NEED A LIMOUSINE...CALL LAKES LIMOUSINES BALLAJURA
Hey Ryan, when is this charter of yours happening? I'm sure you said you would have one up and running by now - didn't you allude to that in a thread about what we want from a charter....
Not my charter Damo but my stepbro's & his business partners charter they we're looking at. I posted that up so they could read ppls thoughts. They got the SPV license and all other licenses required and they're still looking at boats.
Alot of money tied up so they're being very careful. Heaps of boats up for sale but many are very average/run down or overpriced from what they've seen/told me about!
Went out on Sunday, got a seat 3rd down the bow - no.28 I think. 2 bags of Mulies were cut up in half on the way out and then plenty of small frozen squid. My Alvery reel had really shit mono line that was joined at about 20m, causing tangles when you drop, as the reel overspooled when the knot jammed, and just about pulled the rod out of my hands.
The had about 4/0 circle hooks on the rig - general paternoster type, but from what I know about circle hooks, I believe the fish needs to swallow or turn and swim to get hook up - striking pulls the hooks out - man - a lot of striking was going on - all at the same time, when the bottom rises up.
Poor catch for the day - about 10 legal size fish only - not me, the whole boat - biggest abot 1.5kg - all 30 of us...the guy next to me got a coral cod at about 11h30 - he got the number 3. two minutes later another guy nearby caught a just on size red something - and the decky said they had run out of numbers?????? Catch box looks just like the photo - only less fish.
We went out to a hundred metres and on 3 stops, no-one even had a nibble, so dessert ground makes sense - by then everyone was joking that they were taking us to dead spots to save bait as the mulies were done in about 10 minutes....
Diesel cheaper than Mulies?
Plenty of tangles as the guys on deck were standing shoulder to shoulder.....
I'm glad I had the experience, and all your tips were dead on the money, but I decided that if I had to take all that gear, bait etc.. along, I may as well just take my own boat.....
My $1000 sounder at least shows me there are no fish!!
Got home and sent the wife to get fish and chips - only way I can get a Dhuie in my tummy, by the look of it....
Nice to get honest opinions here on this site guys - thanks..
Sad to hear that your day was a fizzer. Its a pity that they have and still operate like this as its a real popular boat for people who dont want to book a whole boat and lots of tourists (1 and 2 mates). Mills will be giving fishing out of perth a bad name. Would have been much nicer if you had had a great day and reported good things but sad to see its still a shitty run outfit.
That is really concerning to hear that charter operators (not all buut it seems like a majority) work like that over here. Over East on the south coast most charters I have been out on have been fairly small numbers on board, very good bait supplies, they look after your catch really well, they have good gear and supply good bait and they don't even charge that much. I have been on a couple of dodgy ones but most are pretty good - here it seems the opposite, it seems most are dodgy and expensive!
It is a pity as i am very keen to go out on a charter but having been in Perth I have not ventured out yet as I have not heard one good report and I do not want to waste my money.
I agree, when i was a kid i went out with my old man on mills 3 times over about 5 years and only ever had one good day. They should be ashamed! Its not like they cant find fish with that finder, and all the experience they should know where to go.
Recently my mate got a dingy and we've had much better luck on that than I ever did with mills!
Simply due to the shit metro ones i had been out on.
I now have to say i was pleasantly surprised after doing one from coral bay on the mahi mahi.
Not because we caught shit loads of fish (coral bay location easily made that happen im sure) but the crew were proffessional, top quality bait used and they made their own ice! and they werent scared to use it either.
They even filleted everyones catch and also let you keep the fillets in their industrial freezer untill you wanted them.
I was out on blue juice once and a guy caught a dhu (the one decent fish for the whole day) and the deckie said hed fillet it providing he gave him half the fillets and the head!
Had exactly the same issue on Bluejuice when my girlfriend caught a big 13kg dhuie - was made to feel very awkward.
Agree on Coral Bay charters in general - awesome customer service, all filletted and bagged up for you as part of the service, rather than as a "favour".
Blackwatch - brilliant, five sails and a black for the day.
Broometime - bottom bouncing, the skipper went out of his way to ensure everyone caught fish, fish were immediately tagged (to avoid ownership disputes) and iced and even gave me a partial refund when I spent half the trip assisting nafa's to ensure they hooked up and had a good day.
Snaggabarra - bloody aweful name but a brilliant charter, great guide, only four on board max and we caught barra and threadies ande I learnt heaps on techniques, tying doubles and mono to braid reliably - top operation
Dampier Creek - BAD BAD BAD .........no, that is unfair (expletive) terrible, gear crap, bait crap, operation crap ...........still there has to be an exception to what appears to be the rule.
Its no doubt as you move away from the big smoke the charters are better generally with more fish & less pressure. For local stuff I do recommend Nebraska (Fremantle) and Seasport Charters (Jurien)....very repuatable/been out with them periodically!
on Too Ezy on the 23rd of this month after researching Mills and found out they have a max I think of 28 fishing spots, $%#@ that I thought....Has anyone been out with Too Ezy from Mindaries? Smallish Ali charter boat, around 7 meters? Cheapish, only $900 for the boat trip and a max of 6 fishers. No food but bait n gear supplied. We are taking our own bait, I've been stocking up on fresh squid, can't beat fresh bait!
Id recomend nebraska charter aswell. Skipper really knows what he's doing and put us onto some great fish (including the pinkie in my pic). Had prety good gear for a charter aswell, was very impressed and will definantly be heading out with them again!

Try and work out where the Skipper is going to fish
They always put themselves right on the lump - and as Graham said, take the best bait you can get with you.

tips!
Nothing much has changed from when i was doing decky work (Mills) many years ago by the sounds. Still not using ice?.........bad as Sam said!
Nebraska charters better for local (Freo) but if your commited then a few tips;
* Fish the bow or stern away from other lines lines and swing your baits away from others!
* Take your own bait ie californian squid & mullet (use strips)
* Take your own ice box & ice as Wade said!
* Take own gear or borrow a mates, braided line and heavy sinker ie 20oz-24 oz and 32 oz
* Drop to bottom first and once on the bottom stay there until told lines up!
* If you get bites then let them have a chew before striking!
* Use 3 single hooks per rig, your own rigs are better!
All the best!
